Handle time..

Needed to make a few handles for some of the handplanes.    I had some Black Walnut, just sitting around doing nothing.     Fitted a blank in the lathe, and turn a knob for a #4 plane...ning-sdc13673-21946-46.jpg?width=750At least it does look a little better than the old one.  ning-sdc13650-21946-44.jpg?width=750Also needed a small knob for a block plane.  Got a little crowded on the blank, but got it turned as well..ning-sdc13674-21946-71.jpg?width=750Almost need a short tool rest for these kind of jobs.     Drilled the mounting holes, and gave both a test fit..ning-sdc13676-21946-87.jpg?width=750Drill bits in the middle were the sizes I used.    The Forstner bit was for counter-boring the brass nut.  The other handle for tonight's session?ning-sdc13675-21946-21.jpg?width=750Also from the Craftsman #4H.  As long as I'm doing the front handle, might as well do the tote to match.   Wood is just a hair under 4/4"  Black Walnut.     Laid out the pattern, including WHERE the mounting bolt came through.   Next, Drill press time...ning-sdc13677-21946-25.jpg?width=750Before any cutting gets done, need to drill the hole for the bolt.    I drill as deep as i can, flip the blank over and drill from the other end.      Then, I'll "chase" the holes with a file ,mounted in the DP...ning-sdc13678-21946-77.jpg?width=750Just a Rat-Tail file. I run it through from both ends.    That way, IF the holes are a little "off", the file will smooth the way.    As long as I have the DP up and running,   I chucked a Forstner bit in to cut out the tight curves better..ning-sdc13679-21946-27.jpg?width=750 Then a trip to the miter saw. I cut the base to match the mounting angle marked on the blank.   TIP:  Save that wedge!     Later, when I counter-bore for the Brass nut, I will use the wedge to help align the hole.   I also had to drill two holes into the base of the handle.    The base of the plane has 1) a nub that sticks up for the bolt to screw imto, and 2)  it also has a small "pimple" of a nub to keep the tote from turning while you grip the plane.    Forstner for the larger of the two.    Wiggle the bit around a bit, makes fitting the spot easier.    Once that is good-to-go, press down on the tote to mark the pimple's location, and drill it with a matching bit.  About 1/4", I think.      After all of this cutting, time to make a LOT of dust.    Had to sand things to shape, to match the older tote.     Photos of the un-finished (naked??) tote will be later.    I am pooped....
