October 30, 201213 yr Hurrican Sandy closed all of our schools yesterday and today, so I had a little free time to research a topic for the Woodturners. A couple of years ago I had the distinct pleasure of presenting a rolling pin workshop to the Mason Dixon Wood Workers (MDWW), near Salisbury MD. One of the members had a unique turning gouge that connected to a Shop Vac. The gouge was really just a piece of pipe with one end ground to a sharp edge. The chips were sucked through the pipe and collected by the Shop Vac. It was remarkably efficient and kept the lathe practically free of chips. The device is available from http://www.cleanturn.net/index.htm I suppose this could be shop made if you had a method of hardening the end of a steel pipe so it would maintain an edge. Safe Turning!
