November 7, 201213 yr I just completed these, it's a dresser and chest of drawers stained to match (I hope) a headboard she already has. You may recognize the dresser from Wood magazine, and it's the second one I've built. The chest was just built to the same dimensions. The mirror is in the frame backwards for the pic. They are the same height, but sitting on blocks and dolies that make it appear different No Ref

November 8, 201213 yr Author Thanks guys. Wood published this in issue 180 (D/J 2004-2005) and I built one back then for my mother. Her's was just varnished since I don't like staining wood. I also built the night stand and headboard to match. In this case my daughter already had a commercial version of the headboard so I built the dresser and chest and tried to stain it to match that. BTW, The colors in the pic are really off, it looks much like a dark mission color in true light. But the finish schedule was an application of Transtint Mission Brown dye, followed by GF gel stain in dark mahogany. I did that so I could fill the pores on the top, for that the GF stain was mixed with Pore'O Pac grain filler and there was a coat of shellac between the stain/filler and the dye. It was all then topped with Cabot 8000 alkyd/soya formula varnish. I got this schedule from Steve Mickley over at the Wood forum. Anyway, there are no drawer slides. Wood does a lot of designs where the drawers just glide on UHMW tape, that's the case with this one. Also, this design has a plywood carcase built, then clad in the QSWO...and that makes a very heavy piece. I'd say each one is north of 150# with the drawers in place. The weight problem was compounded by me using thicker than designed wood...most of the oak is 7/8" and the poplar drawer boxes are 5/8" (I got really tired of planing that much wood and carrying the chips out.) The hardware is from LV and the same stuff Wood used in it's design. I may do yet one more for our own house...but it won't be stained, just natural oak.John Morris said:OK Fred, first of all, outstanding!!!!Second, and Third, and FourthFinish used?Drawers slides, dovetails?Where did you get your hardware? And, what issue of WOOD can we find these! You deserve a big atta boy Fred, that was no easy task, a ton of planing, fitting, and you have perfection, great job sir!!!John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our TroopsThanks guys. November 8, 201213 yr I built these a couple years ago, I think they are part of that same series. Once I get my shop moved to Ohio and set up again I'm hoping to move on and build the rest of the set.

November 12, 201213 yr Fred those are so beautiful. She will love them forever. Those will truly be heirlooms. I built the same one years ago when it was published. I did it out of poplar and stained it black. I then adjusted the plan and made my wife a lingerie chest. I also did the night stand. I built a pencil post bed instead of the one the had. Picture of mine are on my website, link is below. I am on my iPad and can't do pictures or links from it. I called lee valley when I did mine and got the same hardware in pewter since the stain was black. I love the color on these and the extra drawers you put in the second one. Great job, and thanks for sharing it here with us!John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
November 13, 201213 yr Fred here is a picture my dresser. I left off the corbels and didn't put the mirror on it. I also did a lingerie chest and the night stand. Sorry the pictures are small, but I had to snip them from my website. The bed can be seen at here. John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
November 13, 201213 yr Author That's nice, John. What's the finish on them??Btw, thanks for the compliments, Guys. I think the may be overdone since my pic looks like crud. They are much nicer than I can depict in a photo. I may try some more, maybe in sunlight to see if I can get them to look more like real life.No Ref
