Spalted Apple loss

Featured Replies

A few years ago, I came across some spalted apple in my firewood. I turned some down and it was really good looking with some wonderful markings. I was afraid of drying and cracking, so I sealed it with Anchor coating and put it away. I got it our over the weekend and at least 50% of it was cracked or too peethy to use. The rest may be usable.

Was there any other way of stopping the cracking? Dry rot and peethy is a loss anyway you look at it. I wish I could have saved more of it.

This is a piece of it I turned down for a walking stick handle..

Very nice Ron. I am no expert on this but it is my understanding that pretty much all fruit woods are bad to crack.

Great looking piece of wood.  I really like the finish that you have on it.  I'm going to start looking closer at fire wood piles.

Suit yourself and let the rest be pleased.
