Gene Howe Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 My Ryobi trim router has served me well and was worth every cent I paid for it. But, now it has given up the ghost. Right smack dab in the middle of a flush trim job, too. So, not being one to ever miss a chance to upgrade a tool, I bought the Bosch Colt. And one sweet little machine it is, too. While registering it on line, I noticed that there is now a plunge base for it. Of the six in my shop, only the two that are mounted in or above tables are not plunge routers. But, I'm wondering if you folks who use a router a lot would think that a plunge base on the Colt would be useful enough to justify it's $100 cost. All opinions welcome!Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' Mike Dillen Posted November 25, 2012 Report Posted November 25, 2012 Like most products after a short period of time the price should come down. Of course in today's economy who knows anymore. The reviews for the router are great but the plunge base is not reviewing well but only because of the price. I would think if you make a lot of plunge cuts then you could probably justify the cost but if you don't then I'd wait and see if the price comes down, IMHO! I'm also looking for a small trim router and will have to look at this one as an option.Gene If it's not too late you could take the router back, I just found the router and plunge base on Amazon for $159.45  http://www.amazon.com/Bosch-PR20EVSPK-5-6-Amp-1-Horsepower-Variable-Speed/dp/B009ZQUB4U/ref=sr_1_fed1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1353883896&sr=1-2&keywords=bosch+routerswww.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
Gene Howe Posted November 26, 2012 Author Report Posted November 26, 2012 Thanks Mike.I got the router at Lowes and used my Lowes CC. That brought it down to $85. And, with my Vet discount the total was $76.50. I just found the base for $75 at CPO Bosch + $6 shipping. So I, just this morning, ordered it. The present base is really easy to adjust and even has a micro adjuster that's pretty slick. But, in using it yesterday doing some trimming where the depth tolerances were pretty tight, I was wishing for the plunge base.In addition, the plunge base has a bigger base plate, and handles, which I will find easier to use.The only other Bosch tool I have is the jig saw. I think that I'm sold on Bosch tools, now. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
John Moody Posted November 27, 2012 Report Posted November 27, 2012 Gene I think you made a good choice. I have the rigid and didn't get the plunge base and sure wish I had it. I do have a PC plunge router but it is much larger. I might have to update one day.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
Mike Dillen Posted November 27, 2012 Report Posted November 27, 2012 Gene let me know how well the plunge base works. I'm looking for a trim router.www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
Gene Howe Posted November 27, 2012 Author Report Posted November 27, 2012 I'm impressed with the little router. But then, it replaced a $30.00 Ryobi. However, the Ryobi did have handles. If the plunge base is as well engineered as the router itself, I will be pleased. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' DRAGON1 Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 I like the colt for small jobs because of the grip on the machine. But all around I'll stay with my PC 690 with all the bases.
Gene Howe Posted November 28, 2012 Author Report Posted November 28, 2012 I agree, Dragon. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
