Ambrosia maple Box

ning-000-0003-20865-76.jpg?width=750One of the best boxes I have made so far and it took me less than 2 days to do. I just need to cut the waste off now after rubbing in the wax/oil base again, but i have to mount it to my 8" Jaws to do that with a jamb chuck because I drilled it a bit on the deep side so i can't cut it off the way it is now or i wont have a bottom on it. I'll post more as I go.

The Easy Wood Tools are great for boxes like this because they cut through just about anything like a knife through butter

what John said. But as some one who doesn't have a lathe,  I always thought boxes were square or rectangles. :)

At this point I had already made the lid. Then cut the tenon for the lid. Normally that would have taken several minutes to do to make sure it was straight and deep enough. With the Easy Rougher, it took all of 10-15 seconds, and about 30 to get it hollowed out as far as it is in this picture. I didn't use a waste block so I knew the box would be at least 1/2" shorter.

In wood turning, anything small that has a lid to it, is pretty much considered a box :)

ning-000-0001-06-20869-29.jpg?width=721Because of the fact that the tool tended to catch pretty easily after this point, I decided to drill a 3/8" hole, so I had a reference as to where the center was, I then used the finisher to hollow most of the box out and followed that up with the rougher again to get the bottom and sides flat. Well the bottom is flat but the sites are still angled just a bit. It's ok though because it still looks great. I realized though that I may have drilled a bit too deep so I took it out of the chuck and I will use the 8" chuck to mount it similar to a bowl, and use a jamb chuck to make sure it doesn't pop off during removal of the waste wood.

ning-000-0002-03-20869-11.jpg?width=721Here we are with the lid on. I had just put the first coat of finish on it, bees wax and mineral oil.ning-000-0003-20869-63.jpg?width=721It was at this point that the box actually came loose from the jaw, even though I marked the location of Jaw 1 as always, I still don't trust trying to remount it to finish the inside so that will be done by hand.

With my new live screw center, it's really easy to make jam chucks. It's only a matter of drilling the deired wood then threading it and screw on the block that I just drilled. The threads are 1"x8 TPI, so I will use the 7/8 Forstner bit to drill a nice hole for the chuck to thread onto. Stay tuned

Good looking box.  It's funny how every project we turn adds to our skill set.  I've been looking at those Live Screw Centers, I trust that they work as advertised?  I want one to use for a wooden "soft" tail stock live center..

Thanks & You are probably right Bill, I am having to now find a way to make the jam chuck wide enough to support the box but not so wide as to stretch or indent the wood on the inside of the box so that I can finish the outside of it. I just haven't had time to do that yet. I'll post again when i get it finished, but it will probably be several days.

Thanks for the kind words John. I hope I can get it finished soon but I have a few paid projects to finish first that are more pressing than this one. this is a paid project too but its going to a friend who told me I was to put it on hold til the others are done.
