November 28, 201213 yr comment_20750 I've got a toy boy to build for a customer and they might want to paint it in the future but in the meantime it needs some protection. I like to use Deft for a good clear finish, but have never tried to paint over it, so my question is can it be painted over as is or would it have to be sanded to bare wood to get good adhesion? BTW I emailed Deft this same question 3 weeks ago and i guess their response got lost in the mail !! I'm open to suggestions too . GregScroll Saw forum hosthttp://www.thesawdustfactoryga.com/ Report
November 28, 201213 yr comment_20754 It will have to be sanded off later as only poly will stick to poly, especially if using a water or oil based paint. Might I suggest you use a clear paint base with no coloring in it? Report

November 28, 201213 yr comment_20752 You could try , like Mike said, use what they call a "neutral" base. It doesn't have any color to it and is used as a base for dark colors.I've used it to clear coat some of my outdoor "yard art". Main thing is to stir it up real good so the "sheen" is mixed. If not, some of it can become cloudy. At ACE hardware it is labeled a 340 base.Harry BrinkBulldog WoodworkingMontana Report
