Sliding Door Finally Completed!

Featured Replies

I have been working for some time on our master bedroom renovation and have built a rustic headboard, mirrors, small shelves and a sliding door all out of reclaimed Doug Fir that came from an old building from the 1800's. The sliding door was for the opening from the master bedroom to the master bath and my wife wanted a top mount barn door type hardware. The traditional top mount iron hardware was not doable due to a price tag of about $400-$500 dollars, so I went with a more contemporary top mount door hardware typical for closet doors which cost about $100. It works great but didn't look too spiffy, so I had to build a valance for it with a shelf on top. So yesterday I finally got it all done and installed and it makes a big difference in appearance. I also added in some decorative hardware on the door with forged iron handle and dummy strap hinges in a heart pattern. Now it looks like we envisioned and my wife is happy. Here are a few photos of the process.

This was the sample that my wife liked that started off the whole process.

WOw! Way cool Allen, when I first saw it I was kind of dissappointed, but that was back before you had the wood valance up, now it looks great!!!!!! Beautiful and rustic and outstanding.

That's a really nice looking door and the fact that it's a sliding door instead of hinged is a big plus. Nice work Allen!

It's all about the "accessories" to set things off John.

Our wives and daughters understand this which is why they have so many shoes and pieces of jewelry.

That's why a new tool makes our shop aprons look so good. 25r30wi.gif

Allen, that's really nice. What do you use on the other side to grab and pull?

Gene,

The inside has T-111 siding and trimmed around the edges with some doug fir trim and has a long sheet mirror on it so I can check to make sure flannel shirts are buttoned right and match my jeans. It just has a couple coats of blonde shellac on it for now to seal it against the moisture, but it will be painted down the road whenever we get to repainting the bathroom as my wife is not sure yet of the color. We don't have any handle on the inside yet as we have discussed a few different things. Most likely we will end up with a round recessed cup pull or a cloth/rope type pull that hangs down. As it is now you just stick your finger between the wall and the edge of the door and it easily slides. I was going to post a photo of it, but for some reason the "add a photo" button (or any button) shows up on my screen. It may be due to a site update. But below is the previous thread that I had posted some photos of the door after I finished making it.

I like the cup idea as long as the stile is wide enough. Looks like it is. Then there's the narrow, long type, too. Or, get real fancy and use a handle that flips out/up then drops back into it's housing as it's released (before it hits the jamb). I think they are for pocket doors.

You could always put a stop on the rail and use a handle the matches the rail side.

Here is the picture of the back side of the door. It was weird that I couldn't post it yesterday. I am leaning towards doing a recessed cup pull as it would be the most logical. But we will have to make the call down the road as we will be renovating the bath and we will be putting different hardware throughout the bath so we have to have something that will match.ning-dsc-51171-20708-82.jpg?width=721
