November 29, 201213 yr I finally finished the pens for the troops. Nothing really noteworthy. I did try to provide a few with different looks. As far as pens go I'm not a big fan of the slimline pens mainly due to their size and the loose center band, it's just something that gets dropped or lost when changing out refills. My one favorites are the Corian pens with the ruby & blue trim rings. The Corian pens will be the best ones for durability. The wood pens are made with Walnut and 2 with Mahogany. All of the wood pens except 1 are finished with multiple coats of CA. Unfortunately they don't show well in the photos (I'm still learning). The Corian pens are all wet sanded to 12000 grit and then fine scratch remover. The Corian is actually white but appear yellow (again my picture taking ability). Critiques welcome! www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
November 30, 201213 yr Mike, these will do just fine sir, how cool!!!!! Thank you so much for doing this. And they look wonderful, I got nothing as far critiques go. I do like the straight slim look myself over the hour glass look, but that's just me! They are all beautiful and I'd be proud to carry any of them in my shirt pocket!John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops

November 30, 201213 yr Looking good Mike. I have 6 of 10 done and should have the other 4 ready by Sunday. I am not a fan of the center band either, so I don't use it. I just cut a new lower barrel and turn the top barrel a little over sized ala Russ Fairfield style. I will post some pictures when I finish.
November 30, 201213 yr Mike, The pens are great and the troops will like them. I have turned them in batches of 20-30. Although the component style is the same for all, the wood and other materials can vary a lot. Also you can get crative on design which you have done with your inlays. In the last batch of pens I made, I want down to one of our local gun ranges and collected some shells. These were drilled out with a 1/4" drill and 7mm tubes inserted into them. From there it is a decision on whether you want wood on the bullet end or on the primer end. Either way works well. One key note on finishing anything with brass. Use CA as the final coating on brass. This works great at keeping the brass shinny. Hope you do another batch. The troops love them and if you let your community know that you are doing this you may get some extra support - glue, wood, cutting blades, etc. Phil Rasmussen, US Army-retired The Mountain Woodworker Hendersonvile, NC 28791 828-890-8058 pmrii@aol.com www.mountainwoodworker.com

November 30, 201213 yr Glad you like the web site. I am in the process of switching over to a database for the decor and pens. The furniture is already switched over. Have been around and recently posted a discussion on gluing and clamping. Phil
November 30, 201213 yr I know you've been around Phil! What I meant was by saying Where have you been hiding, is the fact that I have not seen so much of your work in one place as I have your website. You have a nice signature line at the end of your posts now that allows readers to get your site and contact you as well, way cool. Thanks for being here Phil, we appreciate you and your wisdom.Phil Rasmussen said:Glad you like the web site. I am in the process of switching over to a database for the decor and pens.
