November 30, 201213 yr Dear Patriot Woodworker's and visitors As I peruse Woodcraft.comand look through their wonderful selection of tools, I come across some tools that remind me of what I have personally in my own shop, and some that I must put on my own wish list. One of them is the Veritas MK II Honing Guide. To call this honing guide a handy device would be an understatement. "Handy" is a the orbital sander rest pad you bought at the last trade show. The Veritas MK II Honing Guideis a necessity for those who still like the old way of honing a chisel or plane iron by hand, yet would like the accuracy of dead on angles in your honing process. I own one and absolutely love it. The guide has multiple settings for back bevels, micro bevels, low angles, high angles, and it has some very nice add on features (extra) for those skew chisels for dovetailing and sharp detailed woodworking and waste cleanup. For a deeper understanding on how the guide works you can open this PDF file and view it's capabilities. Veritas MK IIHoning Guide Instructions.pdf. Veritas MK II Honing Guide at $69.99  Now, my wish list. At the top of my list is the Camber Roller for Mark II Honing Guide. This add-on to the honing guide allows the user to camber their plane irons by letting the roller do the work, all the user has to do is apply slight pressure on the sides as they are running the guide across their sharpening system whatever that may be, scary sharp, stones? A combination? At $24.99 it's a great feature that you may find necessary to have. With a cambered iron you will prevent the ridges appearing on your surfaced work from the sharp corners of the plane irons. Sure youcould camber the iron without the roller, and I have. But it takes time for the initial cambering to form, you need much pressure on the sides of the iron as you sharpen so the edge is removed more at the corners then the middle. As you can see in the image at right, the roller is slightly cambered thus transferring the shape to your iron. Click on the PDF link to see how this system is set up. Veritas MK II Honing Guide Camber Roller Instructions.pdf  Next on the ol wish list is the Skew Registration Jig for the Veritas MK II Honing Guide. This add-on feature lets you sharpen those complicated angles and skews in your woodworking chisels, and because it is married up to the MK II Honing Guide, you get the convenience of setting your skew registration and setting a back bevel or micro bevel at the same time. As you can see it covers the whole array of angles you would want set into your skew chisel. This seems to be a great add-on to my existing MK II and I'll have to wait and see if this shows up under the Christmas tree too! I think by now though I am pushing it, is my wife reading this?
