December 2, 201213 yr  Found a new place to haunt! Second floor is almost 100% surplus Military items.   From caps & covers, to both Black and Brown boots, they just might have it on a shelf.   Oh, and downstairs in this old Feed Mill?    Antiques of all sorts!    Place is called "Junk in a Box"!    I went in to scope the place out. Found three handplanes, rusty as all get out.    Ah, my kind of place.    Braces, and some bits.    handsaws of about any kind, rulers that fold up.  Just about any hand tool around, and some with a cord, as well.    Spent a whopping (for me) $12, for two planes, the third was a might rich for me.  I picked up a PARPLUS #5 as a parts plane.   And a Red-frog Mystery Plane....hey, I said it was a little rusty, right?   Turned that frog over...Well, it do look like a Millers Falls frog, to me.   Plating is a bit flakey, like me.  BIG solid adjuster wheel, and the lateral has the M-F bend to it. Numbers on the casting are "7A', and "406"  Yoke is a two piece steel thingy, though.  Base is a short one, about 9" long.    Under the front knob was another surprise..it has ridges inside the ring, I guess to keep things from turning?  The handles are in very good shape, as well..That isn't red paint, either.    Tote is stamped with the local hardware supplier down in Dayton, Oh.   A "W.H. KIEFABER CO."   Seems they were a big supply house at one time.   The downside to this rusty plane?    No iron, no chip breaker, no lever cap.    Search is in progress on the ebay now... Mean time, I have a few pounds of rust to loose.   Might get the #5 up and running first, as a Barn Wood Scrubber.   More fun... Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
December 2, 201213 yr Author  A little progress today, maybe an hour's work, so far.    Set up a belt sander outside, and cleaned a lot of junk off.  Millers Falls frog starting to look a little better.   Worked over the base, as well..and the sidesas far the other plane..might take awhile longer, but it is getting there.sides are looking good, though.   That rear tote is very compfy, easy on the hands.  This was made to be used, and used hard. Iron is cleaned up, and has a nice cambered edge.    This is my "roughing " plane, for Barn Wood.   13 and change in length, with a 2" wide iron...and a very low front knob.  Now, the search is on for parts for the other plane.  Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
December 3, 201213 yr Author  A beltsander, clamped upside down to the side brace of a swimming pool ladder, was the "work bench" today.   Set things up out on the front porch stoop.    There is a outdoor power outlet out there.   Sanded all the rust and dirt off of the parts.   Was able to at least flatten the frog's face, a couple sides, and almost got the soles flat.  Shined up the lever cap, and the chip breaker on the PARPLUS #5.   Made the iron a little bit sharper, and added a cambered edge to it.   It is sitting here beside the desk.    Right be beside is a Savage #6.      Looks a bit smalll sitting there, though. tried a Craftsman #4 iron/chipbreaker in the M-F #4 plane.   Close, but no cigar, folks.    I'd have to lose about 3/4" of iron before the set would be just a hair through the mouth.   Back to the drawing board. The third plane sitting up at the "Junk in the Box" store is a Worth #4.   They want $20 (!!!???) for it???  Ah, NO!   $5 maybe, just for parts. Lever caps won't fit, irons are too short.   I could put the PARPLUS one in, but it's about a 1/2" too short, and the chipbreaker won't let me get any closer.  Bummmer!   Top it off, I need to make a couple new handles for a Bakelite handled plane.    Seems the tote lost a little bit from the bottom, just snapped off.  Never ends.....Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
December 5, 201213 yr Author Bakelite tote is glued back together.   Some "Superglue"  and sit and hold the tote parts in place for awhile.    Didn't even get my fingers glued together this time, must be getting good at this.  Tried a Sargent #3 iron/ cap iron/ levercap on the Millers Falls wannabe.......They FIT!  Now I can go look for a plain lever cap, and a Sargent Parts Plane.  Base is cleaned up, sole flattened up.  Handles ARE from Millers Falls, but were a "contract plane" sort of deal.   M-F made the plane for a customer, rebranded the tote for the company buying them.  I had a M-F #9 with the same handles, but they had no stamping on the tote. As luck would have it, a #6 plane was also in the house, for a few coats of BLO.   Set the PARPLUS down beside the #6.....WOW, what a small plane!   Almost 6" difference in length, and about 1/2" in width.   And about twice the weight, the #6 is a "Biggie" .   Maybe I aught to take a couple photos, showing the sizes of these planes.    Currently in the house:  A Savage #6, a PARPLUS #5 a Craftsman #4H, two #3s, and five block planes.  Just your basic set of planes. Anybody up for a picture show???Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
