December 2, 201213 yr I finally got the shelf finished for my daughters violin teacher, we are on somewhat of a barter system. It's been awhile since I was able to put the finishing touches on it, I finally got the final coat of varnish on, then waited about a week and rubbed it out last week with LIBERON Black Bison Wax. The wax adds a deep rich color and warmth and feel to the finish. I love it, the only thing with this wax is, don't wait till it dries to buff, buff while wet, it is a PITA to buff when dry. I wish I could have gotten different angles on it, but my big white garage door gets in the pics all the time! The pics don't do it justice, the color and chatoyance is off the charts IMHO. December 5, 201213 yr What kind of wood it that? It looks like curly maple with a stain. However I do know the curly occurs in other woods. What ever it is it looks great and so does your workmanship. Good Job

December 7, 201213 yr Nice. Pretty grain. nice looking table in the background too.I got scolded by an expert finisher for using the word "chatoyance" in reference to wood. He insisted that it was strictly a word for minerals. I am not sufficiently knowledgeably to say whether he was blowing smoke or correct.
December 7, 201213 yr Author Sounds like he was being a pompous a** Cliff. I don't think the mineral industry can hi jack the word Chatoyancy only for their work and products. It is used in woodworking widely.Wiki Definition (not saying Wiki is the end all be all, but what the heck)ChatoyancyCliff said:Nice. December 7, 201213 yr Sounds like he was being a pompous a** Cliff. Well that wouldn't be the first time a woodworker type got too uppity for his own good would it now? I recall a self promoted band saw expert (even published a book on the topic) getting himself thrown off another board because he was arrogant and inflexible and ended up resorting to angry rants at people who disagreed with him. Here is a Britannica definition that only refers to minerals http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/107955/chatoyance I still don't know enough to tell whether they have exhausted the topic or even addressed it adequately. It's a nice word and when used about wood it conveys the same meaning in terms of the visual effect that is conveyed when used talking about rocks. Plus I don't think there is a wood specific corollary. Maybe I'll go ask that expert. ;-p He wrote a book so he knows everything :-o.
