December 8, 201213 yr  and do a couple handles for a handplane, using as much hand tools as I can.  I don't have a brace& bit, though, so some drilling will be with a "hand-held" electric drill.    A coping saw will be tried out, instead of my bandsaws.   A hand powered crosscut saw instead of a mitersaw. I need to set up a place in the Dungeon, er basement, to work in.    Need to cobble up something to hold things in place while I am being a Wood butcher, er wood worker.  The Guinea Pigs for this Grand Experiment?   Why two handle blanks on a piece of Black Walnut..this shows the center lines. Not too bad a piece of scrap wood?    On the other side of this scrap board...My two patterns.   One to fit a Dunlap ( Sargent) plane, and another to replace a Craftsman plane's tote. This was the easy part, stay tuned for more episodes of The Tote Experiment...... December 8, 201213 yr Author Well, I did get the "bench" in the Dungeon cleared up, and ready to use...The "Before" picture.  Somewhere in there is a bench..after a little work, stashing boxes out of the way.    There is a crawl space access door above the "bench", seems a good place to hand a few toys, er, tools..Now, as far as making a tote or two...I had the board clamped in place, ready to drill.   Cordless Drill just didn't get it done.    Got out the corded drill, and drilled from both sides.   Trying to keep the bit on course........NOPE!  I had a blow out on one tote, came right up through the side.   Grabbed a handsaw down, and cut off the "bad" area.  Trace another tote.    Took the board out to the Pole Barn Shop.   Used a drill press to drill two straight holes.   Bandsaw was sitting there, so I cut out two totes.    Router table was still set up.    Rounded over the edges.   One tote was good to go, the second one blew apart.   Some went against the wall, some went to the floor.  Oh well, still had ONE TOTE.    I chucked up some walnut onto the lathe.   Decided to turn two front knobs.    That I can do.   One was installed on a Union #3.    Got to looking at some of the other tools out there.   This time of year, Pole Barn Owner sets up inflatables just inside the barn doors.   Means some of the weather can reach my tools.  I figured I would just load things up, and haul them to the shop-in-the-Dungeon. The Great Experiment?    Between all the bad luck today, it got canceled.    I get winded, just handsawing a simple cut line. The tote?   Awaiting Boo-Coo sanding.  The Knobs?   One installed ( a Low Knob) and one awaiting assignment ( a High Knob)  I also found about four Vintage Knobs sitting around out there ( where'd THEY come from?) And a few rust spotted planes.  Still have to bring some 2xs down into the Dungeon, and set up a tool bench.   One of them days, i guess... December 9, 201213 yr Steve, hand work is tiring. It makes you wonder how the carpenters of 100 years ago plus lasted as long as they did! Don't feel bad you couldn't get er done neanderthal style. I commend you completely working the way you do. You have always made due with what you have, and never complained a wee bit bout anything. Your love of woodworking comes through when I see how you work, and what you work with, yet you just keep going and never complain. Thanks Steve for the follow along, I look forward to seeing more. Keep it up.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
December 9, 201213 yr Stick a sanding drum in that drill press bud, will save time and add a new dimension to the shop!!
December 9, 201213 yr Author  A Union #3, with a new Walnut knob out front, turned while I was having a bad day as a Neanderthal.Haven't decided about that rear tote, yet.   This plane has a tapered iron in it..Not too bad for being about a hundred years old?   Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
