Curly Maple Settee Progress (5)

Featured Replies

Some more pics of our progress. I was able to stain the settee this past Thursday, and last night I got a coat of BLO on the settee. I am happy with the color. In the photo the older vertical turnings and arms appear to be darker, but in reality, it is a great match, I think the flash just brought out the darker underlying patina of the 200 plus year old posts and arms.

We used Homestead Transfast Early American Maple Dyeaw.aspx?B=2679&A=255&Task=Get

ning-finish2-20191-42.jpg?width=750It's amazing how horrible this dye can look upon application, yet after it dries it all evens out.

Below is a contrasting shot of how the grain and stain comes alive after an application of oil.

In the shot above, that vertical light line running down the post is the over head lighting, not a blemish.

Below shots the oil is fully applied and allowed to soak for 20 minutes and wiped off, back to a slightly drab look, until we get our first coat of varnish applied.

Simply gorgeous, John.

Doesn't it make you cry to think that those tiger maple slats will be covered?

James, thanks for the compliments, I wish I had recent progress photos to show ya all but the weather here has been rain the last couple weekends and I have not been able to start the finish yet! This weekend may shape up to be dry around here so I should be able to get a coat of shellac of this project. I'll post pics then. Thanks again James!
