Help! In need of a JIG SAW

Featured Replies

So I find myself in need of a Jig Saw and I found your review Allen on the BOSCH 1590EVS. I have a few questions. I will be using it on my wife's Quilt rack to cut out the top side rails and they are made of 1" thick red oak. I know your review is over a year old so is there another model out there that is as good or better than the 1590EVS? I also don't want to break the bank and now it appears as though the 1590EVS may be hard to find. It looks like the JS470E may have replaced it but I see some reviews that complain that the JS470E blade wanders. I don't want a saw that the blade wanders which is one of the reasons I've shied away from my cheepo B&D jig saw for precision wood working. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Mike - great question, sir

Cutting 1" hard wood is going to, at best, be tough with a jig saw.  A little flimsy one, I think, won't get the job done.  Need one that is variable speed so you can keep the blade running slow and cool.  Another biggy is your choice of blades.  Try to find blades that are precision cut and will cut both directions (similar to Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse scroll saw blades.  A jig might be handy to keep the cut straight.  I think I would try a few practice cuts before the real thing - - - - AND - no hard egg nog before starting your cut.

Mike,

Since I got my Bosch life has been good with no complaints (jig saw-wise that is) I don't have any suggestions for anything current out there as I have no knowledge about any newer jig saws. Considering Bosch's track record over the years, I would still be hard pressed to buy anything other than a Bosch.

Thanks Fred! I think your referring to a scroll saw. I have a scroll saw and your right it wouldn't be a good choice for this project although mine cuts 1" hardwood very well what I'm cutting is to large to try and cut on the scroll saw. I need a handheld saw. I'm looking for a JIG SAW.

Thanks Allen! I think that's the brand I'm going to go with. I did see one that doesn't have a top handle but is referred to as a barrel grip jig saw.

Mike, Bosch still sells quite a few with top handles, if that's what you want. I prefer the top handle, too.

Mine is the JS365 and I like it a lot.

Thanks for the input Gene. That looks like it will fit the bill and all the reviews look great I found a good deal through Amazon and Home Depot, now I just need to get it approved through my loan department!

Gene that's a motto I've tried to live by all my life and it'e served me well, but it's the forgiveness that takes longer to arrive than the tool!

Gene my loan department approved my loan...I'm able to get two extra days of overtime between now and the end of the year. Little does she know it's main purpose is to work on her Christmas present. I ordered the Bosch JS365 Jig Saw from Amazon for $103.00 including 2nd day air.

Good deal, Mike. She'll love what you make. You'll love the Bosch. Sounds like a win-win.

Have a good Christmas!

  • 2 weeks later...

Having owned both D handle and Barrel grip types I prefer the barrel grip.

You can't go wrong with the Bosch.

Got to be better than this one...ning-sdc13961-19837-20.jpg?width=721of course, it is only about 40 years old....
