December 25, 201213 yr  Well, since the last time, several of those basic planes have been sold on Ebay-ski.  So, decided to set up another Basic set..Added a scrub plane to the bunch.  The #4G by Union, A #5 Stanley Handyman Jack plane, a#6 that MIGHT be a Union tool Co. made plane labeled SAVAGE on the 2-1/4" wide iron.   The two block planes are a Stanley 9-1/2 and a look-alike 306 branded CRAFTSMAN.   Made by Sargent. This set should be able to do just about any chore from surfacing rough stock to a final smoothing.   I do have a few other planes, but this set seems to get the most work right now. December 26, 201213 yr Author That would be my H-F Windsor #33 Scrub plane, and that is the way the handles look right out of the box.John Morris said:Steve, the one on the far right with the beautiful handle and tote, what is it?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project

December 26, 201213 yr Author  They are ~$9 at Harbor Freight, all day long. I modified mine into a Stumpy Nubs Scrub plane.   I think I'll keep mine...Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'

December 26, 201213 yr Author  Stumpy took a #33 plane, re-ground the iron's edge into a 3" radius.    Just a modern day Stanley #40.    I can't afford a #40, so a $9 plane can do the same job.  Even if you leave the iron alone, it still does a decent job as a #3 smoother.  John Morris said:Got it, thanks Steve, what is a Stumpy Nubs Scrub Plane?steven newman said:John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project

December 27, 201213 yr Author  Seems That there is a fellow over at LUmberjocks who has a little on-line webcast of a woodworking show, called Blue Collar Wood Working.   Seems to have a weekly , or so, show.   Mainly on building all sorts of jigs. Despite the fact he is from Michigan, seems to be an alright guy.  I already had the #33 Windsor, then I saw the episode about making it into a scrub plane.   Ever try to win one on Ebay?  A LOT more the the $9-$10 that a H-F Windsor plane.  Handles are nice, just a tad bit slick to hold onto. Each plane from this "Windsor" company seems to have slightly different handles. There is no frog to deal with on these planes, just a single, very thick iron.  As for the other planes in the set, I really like that #6, and the #5.  The #4G by union sometimes get the work, but I tend to reach for my #3s more. Lighter plane, I guess. The "Stanley 9-1/2" ( I'm not so sure, no stamp on it) just went on Ebay tonight, as a parts plane. I AM KEEPING the sargent made Craftsman...Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
