BAD day in the Dungeon..

Featured Replies

learned a lesson or two today:   I have been working on a small bench.   Got some things done..ning-sdc13969-19275-71.jpg?width=750with only one split going on.    BAD day around the house, stomped down to the Dungeon to try to get something more done, and some peace and quiet.    I got the bandsaw re-bladed, and adjusted, well almost.   It takes a right turn right after it gets about 1/2" into a cut.  No biggie, i can adjust for that..ning-sdc13987-19275-7.jpg?width=750I even cleaned the guides!   That chunk of soon to be fire wood?  It was supposed to be a leg brace..ning-sdc13988-19275-42.jpg?width=750But the more I tried to cut it to fit, the worse things got.   A bunch of splits started to appear.   Clamps stopped clamping ( one did wind up flying across the room, though, POS) saws wouldn't saw.   Not a very good day.   The ONLY thing that actually worked right....ning-sdc13986-19275-88.jpg?width=750was a #5 Jack plane, and a #3 smoother.    They made a mess of the area, with all them shavings, though..ning-sdc13989-19275-7.jpg?width=750shavings everywhere!    That old Jack plane can really put them out!   I had to use the bandsaw to cut a couple blanks for those braces, then do a rip cut on the saw, while doing a right turn just to follow a line.   Put the blanks into the vise, and planed them down to the line.   Laid out the angles for the 45s, and that's when things went downhill.

The lesson I learned today?    NEVER go to the shop in a foul (Peed-off) mood.   Went down there angry-birding, and things went worse.   I'll let things sit a dayor two, and restart the bench.    I have more of that old lumber (FREE!) on hand.     Things might get a different direction though.    Maybe back to a K.I.S.S. plan of things....  I left the wreck in place, down there.   As a reminder of what can happen..ning-sdc13985-19275-67.jpg?width=750UGLY, ain't it?   Maybe next time I won't get so complicated.    Afterall, "The more they complicate the plumbing, the easier it is to foul (sp?) up the drain."   To paraphrase Mr. Scott.

Scottie had a way of putting things!

Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Been there, done that.

Some days nothing goes right. It's better to walk away and get a fresh start later.

Went back down  there awhile ago, still ugly.  But< there is enough of the 5" wide stuff for some glue ups, and a fresh start.  I do have the router on site, with a dovetail bit installed.  looking like a few sliding dovetails later on.    I need to find that homemade fence, though.   I can make nice straight router cuts with that.

Brought my 3/4" wide chisel back upstairs.  Gave it a ride on three of my stones.   Two oil stones, and a dry Arky-saw stone.  I can now see myself in the bevel, and in the chisel's back.   One down, 10 or so to go.    Then, maybe, rig up another saw vise, and work on about ten saws?    By then, I should have found that #$#@ glue bottle to do some glue-ups with.

Brought up all the wider chisels today, set up the belt sander.  Gave them all a going over, fronts and backs.   Found a few with some nicks in them, figures.   All were needing a good working over.   Upstairs, I had the oil stones waiting, all oiled up.  Even had some sandpaper ready.    made some progress..ning-sdc13992-19278-69.jpg?width=721Yeah, yeah, yeah, ugly handles.   this is the before shot.  Anyway, after a little work...ning-sdc13993-19278-89.jpg?width=721The backs are starting to look better.   One has a couple nicks in it, another STILL has a low spot.    As for the bevels..ning-sdc13997-19278-33.jpg?width=721we're getting better,  but not quite done.   Need a little finer sandpaper on some flat tile.    I can shave with the two on the right, as is.

That pair of splits looks to me like the tenon was  a tad big.

But the more I tried to cut it to fit, the worse things got.

Been there dun 'at.  Cut the board three times and dammit, it was still too short.

Anyway that looks like  three fingers of a fine single malt with a water back.
