In a shoe box.   Hmm?    Don't wear an 8-1/2 size shoe....  Looked inside...ning-sdc14000-19213-11.jpg?width=750Ah, a Rusty One!   Just the kind I like!    Not sure about that red paint though..ning-sdc13998-19213-3.jpg?width=750Hmmm, looks like an  old "Knuckle cap" plane.   Seems to be a Stanley, at least it stamped on it..ning-sdc13999-19213-34.jpg?width=750Yep, just a might bit rusty.   had a little chip out, too...ning-sdc14001-19213-44.jpg?width=750but not a big deal.  most of the old Nickel plate was gone.    Might as well head to the Dungeon, and fire up the drill press with the wire brushes...ning-sdc14006-19213-56.jpg?width=750Well, about an hour in the Dungeon, and the base looks better, and it is flat.  ning-sdc14005-19213-57.jpg?width=750Brass is shiny, 98% of that red paint is gone, and the nickel plate is gone as well.   That adjuster  there even has a Patent date on it!  FEB 20 94   The base has one as well.   The arm for the lateral has three!   And has STANLEY stamped on it!  ning-sdc14007-19213-73.jpg?width=750Yep, MOST of that red paint is gone, and the brass is shined up.   I even cleaned the underside of the cap.   It was a might nasty.   Still have to sharpen that "V" logo iron.    But after an hour or so of work, I'm ready for a break.    Time to do a little research on Knuckle caps ....

It would seem that this is  a Stanley #18, from about 1900 or so.    Stanley then changed to a four piece knuckle cap design.   The "Newest' Patent date on this plane is about 1897!    Finally!   Something older than me!   I have it sitting here beside the computer, sitting alongside a Sargent 306.   Similar planes in size.   Different capirons,  bases are a bit different.  The sargent one was sold at a Sears store, as a Craftsman Brand plane.
