December 30, 201213 yr Looks like a 4 1/2 but I don't think they introduce the 4 1/2 till 1888.Smittyhttp://www.firstdesignwoodworking.com/
December 31, 201213 yr It might be made by Lenord Bailey right before Stanley bought him out. I think I'm wrong there; they hooked him sooner than that and at some point they parted ways and he Made planes under the Bailey Tool Co. of Woonsocket, RI (1872-1879). December 31, 201213 yr Here are some comments on facebook about your planes, I shared this with our friends. Tim Harvey Could that plane pre-date Stanley purchasing Bailey plane company? Woolco was the largest department store chain in the country at one time. Tim Harvey It that is the case, the plane would be pre-1869. The Stanley Rule & Level Company boutht several of Leonard Bailey's plane design patents in 1869 John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
December 31, 201213 yr Very nice John. Did you run across these at an estate sale or find a neat out of the way place that had them? Looks like a couple of jewels.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com

December 31, 201213 yr I'd say you got a good deal. They should be good users. I'd be tempted to put a slight camber on the 4 for smoothing and a heavy camber on the Bailey to be more of a scrub plane.Good, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.
December 31, 201213 yr left one looks like a stanley #4The one on the right is a baileys original though without seeing it sideways i can't tell you much. Check out this website http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan0a.htmlÂ

December 31, 201213 yr  That was whenLeonard was mad at Stanley, and went off and made some of his own designs at Woonsocket, sometimes under the Victor name.   Not much of a frog there, is there?  You MIGHt try over @ Hyperkitten and see what they say.  But I THINK this is about 1875 for a build date.  Stanley didn't let their "cash cow" stay away too long... Just checked over at Brass City.  They had a #5 sized plane, made by the same company.  Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
