January 1, 201313 yr I am an idiot.I am a "hand tool" woodworker although I do run a mixed shop with machines like jointers and planers and bandsaws for breaking down rough stock. I woodwork full time and have been making saw dust for over 16 years. Although I have many designs that use only hand tools, lots of my commissioned work involves powered machines due to time constriansts and deadlines. That said, I haven't touched my 8 inch jointer since last may until today. I started breaking down stock today for a smallish cabinet I am making and it needs to be done by late next week. So I break out the machines and start knocking down 4/4 mahogany. Where's that pesky push stick I made so long ago? Aw, who cares. It's only a few boards and I am experienced and SO careful... Ha. The tip of my left ring finger is now jointed nice and straight, about an eighth inch shorter than it was this morning. Yes, it hurt. Yes, it will continue to hurt for days. Yes, I am an idiot.I guess the point of this post is that saftey is always important no matter how experienced you are or how often you use your machines. A jointer was the last thing I expected to get hurt on. Ruined my day:-)The push stick was mixed in on a lumber rack that I keep scraps on. Had I really looked, I would've found it. I was comfortable. I do this six to ten hours a day everyday and have no need to worry. Thinking like this was my first mistake. Always take time to be safe. Don't be an idiot like me.Tommorrow, I will finish processing the lumber with my jack and jointer planes. They work well and I might just keep the jointer in the corner (where it has been for so many months) and let it laugh at me for a few weeks. BE SAFE! Don't let your jointer laugh at you! And I hope everybody has a SAFE and prosperous New Year!Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine WoodworkingAdam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking
