January 3, 201313 yr Three of my larger planes.  Two were getting a might bit dull and dirty, the third was just ....dull. A Union #5A, a Union made Savage #6 ( the one that is just dull) and a union made DE#6c . Even the rear decks needed some work..so, going one at a time, today was the UNion #5A's turn.   Tore it down to all the parts.  Shined the Brass parts up ( more on THAT later) gave the wood parts a coat of BLO.  Brass wire brush in the drill press got rid of all the crud, and rustiness. I have a "new" brush to use! This one is just 1" diameter.  Means I can get into all kinds of places, even on them frogs.  Got the threaded parts clean and oiled, wiped the bare (and not so bare) metal parts down with a coat of oil. Used all of my sharpening stones on the iron, after a trip under the wire brush.  Started to put things back together...Look a little better? I think that wood is a Mahoganey (sp) that Union used back then. It sure ain't rosewood!  That brass wheel is RIGHT hand threads.  This is a 1905-1910 plane.  The wheel has a little bit of markings in the inside rim.   Remember the Ring from Lord of the Rings?  Well this has a spot that looks like a small "bird' and then some that looks like writing.  Hmmm. Anyway, got the iron back in, adjusted the frog for a cut, set the depth. Went back down to the dungeon shop, and made some....Moxxon TP!   I think that wood the shavings came from is Hickory!  Well, one down, two to go.  Anybody seen Frodo?  I need him to read this wheel....... January 4, 201313 yr Author  Next up? The big guy in the back.   At one time, this plane was a total wreck. Showed up one day, rusted, pitted, wrong iron, and BROKE IN TWO!    I rebuild this, what was once a DE6c, almost from the base up. A new base (this time in ONE piece!) and a new iron. New handles as well.   The old gutta Percha tote was trashed. Anyway, after almost a year of work, this old plane was needing a refreshing.  Boy was it!   Iron was out of flat!   Was not square. It was having a tough time cutting warm butter!  Base was looking a bit shabby, rust was creeping back in. Handles needed a refinsh of BLO.   Started with tearing it all down to just ....parts. no matter how nasty they looked.   had a wire cup brush to clean all them nooks and crannies...Lever cap had some sort of sticky junk all over it, and that iron with a "Shark" on it.   Nice and thick iron, just way out of tune... I yanked all the bolts, and gave the handle a few coats of BLO and let them dry awhile.   Bolts got a shining up, base was brushed clean and a new coat of black paint to stop any more rustiness from showing up.   I toke the iron to the grinder, squared the edge, checking with a square, even.   Re-established a decent edge, after getting the back flat.   I had the beltsander sitting right beside the grinder, and worked both down until it was ready for some stones.   Got things slowly back together.  Got a nice sharp edge on that Berne iron.  When back down and tried the thing out on that Hickory PlankWe have curlies!  Moxxon TP!  How about a few looks at the completed project?Front end...Back porch... Yep that is a Union made frog, about 1905??? And, since this has a "c" in it's name...a "groovy bottom".   This is a large plane, about 18" long.   I also worked over the other #6 in this group, all it needed was a little sharpening, and very little clean up.  post pictures later of the group.    By the looks of their frogs, all three were made by Union in the early 1900s.   Something older than me, imagine that...;-)) Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'

January 5, 201313 yr Author Over at Lumberjocks, i posted a nice long Blog about how I re-furbished that little #4 Companion plane.  I showed off some of the toold I use on these rehabs, as well.  And, yes, I did burn the bag that this plane came in.  I don't want any of my planes to catch a case of the "Pug-Uglies".  ;-))What is next for my rehab station?  Well, IF my plane bench arrives in the shop, I can clear enough room to set up a saw sharpening station.   Seems I have about six saws that need a little work...Sign on pick up truck's back window..:' Save a Horse, ride a Cowboy'
