Allen Worsham Posted January 6, 2013 Report Posted January 6, 2013 I have been looking for a better mortiser to replace my Harbor Freight one that was given to me a year or two ago as I plan on making some projects that will require me doing quite a few mortises. I came across one on my local "Craig's List" of a Delta 14-650 for $100. I emailed back and forth got it for $75 so I drove down to meet him and picked it up today. He was a really nice guy and does stair rails and wainscoting for a living  and has used this mortiser for a few years. He just upgraded to a new Powermatic mortiser which he is really happy with. It is well used but in very good condition as it was taken very good care of. The only thing that has a problem is the gas strut to help raise the head back up after the plunge cut, but this in not a big issue and is an easily replaceable part which I can get online  for about $25-$30. This machine will replace my Harbor Freight mortiser which is a a pretty wimpy machine, but I was given it for free form another woodworker along with 2 sets of chisels so I can't complain. The 14-650 has been replaced by the 14-651 not too long ago and is pretty much the same as the 14-650 but has a different fence adjusting set up which is not a big deal. So I am happy with it and look forward to removing the old HF mortiser and giving it someone else if they want or toss it if I can't find a taker. It works fine for doing a few mortises here and there, but it is pretty wimpy and not something that you want to use for making a lot of mortises. Harry Brink Posted January 6, 2013 Report Posted January 6, 2013 Good find. Not too much up here (Mt.) on Craig's list unless you want to drive 2 or 300 miles. With it being winter, now is not the time, unless necessary, to go on a road trip.Harry BrinkBulldog WoodworkingMontana
Allen Worsham Posted January 6, 2013 Author Report Posted January 6, 2013 I went ahead and ordered a new strut online. Cost was $32 which includes shipping. I was thinking about going to the auto parts store to see what they might have, but this was much easier and I didn't have to go out in the rain. It should be here in about a week.Allen WorshamCorona, CAallenworsham@earthlink.net'Graze in every man's field, but always give your own milk' J. Vernon McGee
