January 10, 201313 yr A friend gave me a gorgeous piece of Spalted Maple. Thinking about turning into a platter. I've done some bowls before but this will be a first. Did some research and came up with this site- http://www.woodturningonline.com/Turning/Turning_content/Turn-a-Plate.pdf Although mine will not be a segmented platter, I found some good tips there. While searching for the platter information, I came across another site that has over 400 links to turning videos. Looks like most of them are to You Tube but there are lots of others as well. The site owner has categorized the videos to help locate specific information. It can be found here- http://woodturningvideos.weebly.com/. Finally, a project to replenish your sale items when the craft shows start up, Mr. Raffan is a well known turner and explains his technique in a PDF download from here- http://www.ghwg.ca/techniques/scoopsraffan.pdf You may have heard of the Raffen Grind or Raffen Skew Chisel- be warned he creates practically the entire scoop with his skew chisel- but it certainly can be made with scrapers, gouges and parting tools.
