January 14, 201313 yr I am interested in making a Black Powder Rifle, probably a kit where I would add the stock but the kit comes with the hardware. Anyone have any recommendations?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
January 14, 201313 yr John about 25 years ago I built a 50 cal. Hawken cap lock. I don't remember the manufacturer but it was American made and the quality was excellent. The stock was walnut and the grain was beautiful. I browned the barrel. It was a nice firing riffle. Unfortunately I had to sell it to buy groceries. I spent a lot of time on the build and I absolutely enjoyed it. Most of the kits came with the stock but you could choose how far along the stock was machined. Mine was just the rough shape but the barrel bed was machined to match the octagon barrel and the lock recess was machined. Everything else was just the rough shape.www.thepatriotwoodworker.com Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops
January 14, 201313 yr Author That's what I am looking for Mike, thanks for the great story. It is sad but sometimes food comes first! It reminds me of a time when my wife and I were just starting out in our very first apartment over 20 years ago, our rent was 400 dollars a month, one month my pay fell short, and we had to make up the rent, I took my beloved M1 Garand bring back from Korea a dear friend gave me down to the pawn store and got a couple hundred for it, I never did get it back out, I was destroyed for years if I thought about it. It was "Excellent" on the rating scale, all original. I fired it about 4 or 5 times and love it. What a rifle! I'll never own another one unless I have an extra 2 to 3 thousand dollars floating around, and that aint gonna happen till the kids are out of school and living on their own! LOL And by that time those rifles will be selling at 3 times what they are now. Sorry for rambling, but your story brought back memories. Thanks again Mike.Mike Dillen said:John about 25 years ago I built a 50 cal. Hawken cap lock. I don't remember the manufacturer but it was American made and the quality was excellent. January 16, 201313 yr The lock has to go opposite the eye. Getting that wrong is more annoying than a full auto gun ejecting brass across your line of vision. I suppose it's worse to have a wrong handed single shot bolt action.Â
