January 18, 201313 yr The Block planes got adjusted for fine work..an all steel one from Shelton, cutting some pine.THE Blue Stanley #220.  I had just re-sharpened the iron. Might need a touch more? A Stanley#18, type II Knuckle cap.  Making some piney curls. A Craftsman/Sargent#306.  Not too bad for a Craftsman tool? Ok, enough with the easy pine, time for the tough stuff.Smoothing out a scrap of Oak. I even tried a bit of molding.  Tried all four planes at it, tooLooks like I can do smooth as glass round overs, in Oak.  haven't figured out how to do coves with these block planes, yet.   Too cheap to get a set of Hollows & Rounds Planes.... January 20, 201313 yr Author  Since i went to all the trouble of re-doing the edge on the #220, I figured I try it out.    The three I have left decided to take a turn as well.   For a cheap, little, no-frills plane, that Shelton all-steel (no cast iron in it) isn't too bad.  The other two I'm keeping are both adjustable mouth planes.  I had them adjusted as closed as I could.  Was getting see-through shavings. That old piece of scrap Oak USED to be the front "foot" on the dresser I recycled into a till.   I may go back down there, and try out an old Union #3 on the scrap.  Who knows, maybe it will need a little work????Planer? January 20, 201313 yr Author  just used it yesterday to bevel an edge on the computer desk's breadboard end.   It was starting to get dinged up, so i tested a Blue block plane on it.  Made a nice, smooth 45 degree bevel in just a few passes.  No chatter at all. Might have to bring up one of the "good "planes, and see how they do on this old Barn Wood Beech.Planer? January 21, 201313 yr Author A few looks at the "completed" scrap OakThis is the (or was) the inside face of the dresswer's foot. That crater back there was where a wheel thingy was. That thar be END GRAIN!   Remember, all this is done with just block planes. And this is the "Good' face.   I didn't round the one end over, because of the crater down there.  Now, IF I can just figure out how to make coves with a block plane...
