Hate to hi-jack the thread, but along similar lines the FBI, the Indiana State Police and other agencies have taken the knock-off stuff seriously. During last year's Covered Bridge Festival several were arrested and thousands of counterfeit items confiscated based on consumers complaints from the previous year festival. There have been additional raids since both related and unrelated turning up warehouses full and trucks transporting items through the state. Flea markets seem to attract fake merchandise(rs) quite often. Some of the later raids did get the "middle men" by locating the distribution centers/ warehouses which helped lead to the trucks transporting illegal merchandise through the state. But you're correct, did not shut-down the "importer" only slowed them a bit. It will be interesting to see during this years festival how many "new" ones show up...I've known a couple of the undercover excise officers...they say they're understaffed to attack this like it needs to be...but at least they made a strong statement last year. Popular Post Nickp
@Schnewj...Thank you for the additional research on PTI...it was very helpful to ordering from them... Now that it's delivered there are more noticeable differences between the real one and the knockoffs... 1. The real one picks up a staple from about 1 1/2" away across the entire wand... 2. The rubber handle is actually rubber 3. "Garrett" is embossed in the rubber 4. The plastic housing is rugged and strong...no twisting 5. It comes with the battery 6. It comes with the right manual and warranty registration 7. The box is not plain white.,..it's a real Garrett box, pictures and all There's probably more but these are first impressions... Thank you all, and especially @Stick486 for the research on "knockoffs"... Grandpadave52, Cal, Dadio and 2 others

I'm sorry you had to go through this, but since you did, I applaud you for your posting the entire story and truth behind it. A valuable awareness and learning experience for al of us. Hopefully this mess will prevent someone else from getting ripped off like you nearly did or at least from going through the same hassles you experienced. THANKS again for this thread!! So, my discussion with Amazon customer service was a little puzzling. They told me they had never heard of such a thing before and would refund my money or exchange. Initially was told to keep the counterfeit and do what I want with it. Humph...what would I do with a piece of junk... Then they asked to send it back so they could report it to Security...and again advised me they had never heard of this before. They also told me they would "take care of" the seller...don't think that's been done either. Coin-ka-dinkaly...with the exact same pictures, price, description it is now sold by Rakuda Warehouse Deals... I am not as convinced as others that they trash bad sellers...I just can't imagine that anybody that had bought the same scanner did not get the same junk I did... ...or maybe they just didn't know it was counterfeit...and maybe still don't... The ONLY reason I questioned it's performance is because you and @schnewjuse it on your own wood to protect your equipment and if it didn't perform as good as you described than it must have been a bad unit. That's when I called Garrett and found I had a counterfeit in my hands. If I didn't trust you guys as using it for your own purposes I would probably still have the counterfeit on the shelf... schnewj
"Caveat emptor", or for those of you who didn't take Latin, "Let the buyer beware". I understand that for some people Amazon is the easiest source of obtaining some goods. Not everyone has access to what they need locally. This is where a business like Amazon is a good resource. However, you will not convince me that Amazon does not know that this counterfeiting is happening. They should be taking steps to police their own business. If they fail to do so, people will wise up and stop doing business with them. Until they do, it is up to the purchaser to do due diligence when purchasing goods. Buy from established vendors who you know are legitimate. Many have their own websites and, in addition, use Amazon as an outlet, also. Sometimes, that $3 lower price for an item is not the best move. Spend a couple of dollars more and deal with an established, legitimate, vendor/supplier. It is OK to order through Amazon, just make sure that you are dealing with a good supplier. Cal, HARO50 and Stick486
