Grandpadave52
Nothing runs (quite) like a deer(e). So yesterday evening a little before dusk, I'm trying to hack down the last of yard. We have ~4.5 acres +/-. The portion I was mowing is semi-segregated from the rest of the property divided by a row of fir and spruce trees; ~acre +/-. The tree line ends about 50' on end from the perimeter fence (standard 54" cattle woven cattle fence). As I start back across, I see something moving along the fence between a row of maple trees and a few pin oaks. Up the hill it came, but put on the skids about the fir/spruce tree line. I was so surprised, I stopped the John Deere about 75' away. I guess we both had the "look." It was a young buck; best I could tell probably will be a small 6 pointer, still with felt. As we eyed each other for several moments, I decided I had to get back to mowing...he decided he had to get back to what ever he had in mind so he turned ran back across the property from whence he came, the jumped across the back fence into the cornfield. We've had a few deer on our property over the ~39 years we've lived here, but I never encountered one while outside. There are no wooded areas or other cover close other than some trees that have grown in the neighbors fence rows; no open running water close either. One of those random things. Link to comment

schnewj
Deer don't need a lot of cover to become invisible. I have seen people walk withing two feet of a deer lying in the brush during hunting season. They would walk right past the deer and never see them. I would run into these folks later in the day and ask them if they had seen any deer. The usual answer was: Him: "Naw! I haven't seen anything all day long, I don't think there are any deer in this area". Me: "So, you didn't see that (4, 6, 8) point lying alongside the trail at the bottom of the hill"? Him: "What (?) point"? Me: "The one you walk right past this morning." Him: "There wasn't any deer there. Your crazy"! Me: "OK, have a nice day". As my buddy Stick would say...CITIDIOT! I have had fawns walk right up to me while riding my buckskin mare in the woods. I would swing down scratch their heads and get back up and ride away. They didn't know enough to be afraid and seem to be drawn to the horse. Happened twice to me as a teen. I shot in a skeet league for awhile. The range was on the Stennis Space Center. There wasn't any hunting allowed on the site. We would usually start around 7:00 and end up shooting under lights. At dusk we used to have a couple of does and in the spring, their fawns, walk out onto the skeet field (about 100' away) and start feeding...while we were shooting. They were so used to it they weren't scared of the shooting or us. Link to comment
Chips N Dust
I never tell people what I have or have not seen - none of their business. If they want to see deer/elk, then they can go find them like I have. One time, my dad and I were hunting and we were driving by a large clear cut and way down in the bottom of the unit was a herd of elk. We stopped and were looking to see if any were bulls, when somebody pulled up along side and starting talking to us. They asked if we had seen anything and we of course replied, "Nope, haven't seen anything all day." Well, they drove up the road a ways and looked back to where we were looking and they hit brakes when they saw the elk we were looking at. I am sure there were a few cuss words going on in that pickup. Another time, we walked into an area right at daylight and we are looking into the first opening, where there was a small herd of elk (no bulls) when a rig comes pulling up and two guys jump out and start walking fast up the road past us. Little did they know that there was a small herd of elk in that first opening and we were watching them. They come back about 20 minutes later - they did not see anything where they went and could not see what we were looking at, and asked us - See anything? Well, by now, you know what the answer was... lew
We have so many deer in this area that the highways department puts up these signs However, after hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax payer's money, for research, they changed the signs to They discovered the deer can't read. Nah not this time..he needed to bulk up some. That way when me, my wife or daughter hit him or a cousin (up to 4 between us now) crossing the road, it renders the vehicle useless for a month or so. Plus my grand-kids get a little weird when 'Bambi' is served, unless of course they don't realize what's in that chili or 'summer sausage.' About five mile to the eat of here along the blacktop road I travel FREQUENTLY to the schools, there are 2-3 different herds. Once corn/soybeans are out and on into winter, they come out of the fringes of the woods about an hour before sunset and feed. I've counted upwards of 100 in one herd, over 50 in the other. A flock of wild turkey often shares the area with the second herd. Link to comment

I think if the radio hosts would of explained it further, I think eventually a bell would of went on in her head, and she would have had one of those DUH moments. That would have been really cool, to hear the DUH moment from her on radio. Link to comment
