  1. I hope this Wednesday finds all of you safe and healthy. Our Patriot Turners- @Lissa Hall posted a concern about the crack that occured in a cedar bowl she recently turned. Several of our members provided some advice about what might have happened. Please check out her post and maybe you can offer additional ideas- @Ron Altier turned another beautiful bell ornament! He explains more about it and the finish he uses in his post. We've had lots of updates on past posts. @Kevin Beitz is still fighting with a maple bowl. Several members offered additional suggestions- @Gerald added additional images of his Friendship Bowls. He explained more about the finishes he uses- @Pauley provided more information on the finish on his curley maple vase- @Masonsailor has finished up his turned tulip cabinet- One of @Gerald's older post was revived. Great article from Woodcraft on making a jam chuck- What’s Coming Up- Everything still appears to be on hold. It may be a while until meeting, workshops and symposiums are up and running. For The Newbies- Woodworker's Journal has added a nice video, from Ernie Conover, on finishes for woodturners. Mr. Conover does a great job explaining and demonstrating several, simple finishes- Expand Your Horizons- There is still a growing interest in combining acrylic resins and wood. This video is not so much a "how to" but more of a "look what I did." New Turning Items- The folks at Woodturners Wonders are offering a new stand alone tool rest for your grinder. You can read more about it here- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/grinding-wheel-accessories/products/stand-alone-tool-rest Everything Else- Rick Turns has his April video list available. With the lockdown, it's nice to have this list to pick from Been playing off and on with that splated maple bowl. I've always wanted to turn a Calabash bowl and that was my intention with this one. Unfortunately, the punky wood under the faceplate had different plans. To get a safe purchase on the piece, I needed to reverse the mount which left screw hole where the bowl bottom ended up. I'm not really happy with the shape, either. The holes were deep enough that when the inside was turned, they came thru. I tried to use sawdust and CA to fill them but they are pretty noticeable on the inside. So right now, I'm considering some sort of foot. I have some ebony piano keys. Might try to use them and design something. Surely can't leave it like this. Safe turning and stay well
  2. I just joined the forum so I thought I would start with my latest turning project. This is a project to turn an existing liquor cabinet into something to bring it into line with our Art Deco theme for this house. It involves three separate turnings in a tulip style which will be mounted vertically on a 1 5/16” brass pole and progressively getting smaller in diameter, largest on the bottom. The “tulips” are all 15” high, and are 16”, 13” and 11” in diameter. I am making them from 8/4 African mahogany. The biggest challenge has been to arrange the grain pattern to end up looking like overlapping petals. On top of each tulip will be an alder platter attached and 2” larger diameter than the turning. So it is basically a vertical mounted lazy susan. The first and largest turning is now complete. Paul
  3. Hope this Wednesday finds all of you healthy and safe. I've added a few more videos this week just in case you are locked in the house/shop. If you watch and enjoy any video directly on YouTube, please give the author a "thumbs up" and leave a comment letting them know you appreciate their hard work. Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier created another beautiful ornament. Ron has a magical talent for design and color! Along with the picture, Ron asked our opinion on making it into a tree topper. Check out his post on the star and see if you can give him some ideas- Ron also posted an inquiry concerning negative rake carbide cutters and acrylic blanks. Check out the post. If you can provide some insight on his questions, please let him know. Ron is this weeks big winner in the number of posts department! Using input from his negative rake cutters question, he showed us the gorgeous acrylic egg he turned. In his post, Ron tells us a little about his experiences. Ron gave us a heads up on a cool video for an open segmented turning. The video author sure has a light touch and sharp tools! And another video where the author turns an unusual object. I found this especially interesting in light of a question asked by member @FrederickH concerning the use files as turning tools. Check out the parting tool at about 6:32 @Masonsailor continues his work on the lazy susan tulips. He showed us the trimmed out "home" for it! Check out more images here- @Artie brought up a couple of observations on safety. He noticed the latest issue of Woodcraft Magazine pictured a turner working without a face shield and was wearing long sleeves. We had a great discussion as our turners provided their thoughts. How do you feel about it? Self Isolation- For The Newbies- A video from Lyle Jamieson on tool rest position and rough turning between centers- Easy Wood Tools has started posting very short videos demonstrating their products. You can check out all of the videos from links at this YouTube Video- Expand Your Horizons- The Woodworker's Journal has a nicely illustrated article from Ernie Conover on accessories for hollowing tall forms. The complete article is here- https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/accessories-for-excavating-tall-hollow-forms/ @Ron Altier's experience with acrylics led me to this rather lengthy video. If you are considering getting into casting your own acrylic/resin blanks, there is a lot of good information. New Turning Items- Sam Angelo- The WyomingWoodturner- demonstrates the new Carter and Son Thread Chaser. If you are into pen making, Woodpeckers has some new kits- Check their website for more information- https://cdn.woodpeck.com/triton-rollerball-and-fountain-pen-kits.html?_bta_tid=32476282785476398023750574440026478214355615690754598719186774204374129149320745779994015069695242775658 The folks at Woodturners Wonders also a sale of until the end of March on many of their products- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/specials Everything Else- @Artie's post on safety gear was very timely. I had an old piece of locust that might have made a nice shallow bowl. I was getting a lot of tearout so I decided to experiment with different speeds and different negative rake cutters. I found that, for the outside of the bowl, the Ci2-NR2 (2" radius, rougher, negative rake) is awesome at high speeds. Unfortunately the blank had a defect that I didn't see. I still haven't found all of the pieces! Safe turning and stay well
  4. It's been a busy week here. Not much turning but still in the shop. Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier has really been industrious this week and wins the prize for the most posts! Ron is still experimenting with the UV activated finish he first mentioned a couple of weeks ago. He used it on this fabulous ornament- He describes more about what he is learning about the characteristics of this finish in his post- Ron also posted a question to our members about the Hut Crystal Coat finish. Check out his post and see if you can give him input on your experiences with it- @Masonsailor showed us his progress on his "tulip" turnings- If you haven't been following his progress, you can check out his thread here- @Pauley turned his Celtic knot rolling pin and it is a beauty! He received lots of great comments. Head over to his post and see what our turners had to say- Back in the summer, @John Morris asked our members about the Ring Master turning tool. There has been some additional information shared on that thread. Here's the thread in its entirety- What’s Coming Up- @Jim from Easy Wood Tools alerted us to this weekend's show. Click on the image for the link to more information and registration. For The Newbies- I accidentally stumbled onto a series of videos from Stuart Batty. These videos cover a wide range of turning topics and techniques. Here's the link to the video set- https://vimeo.com/woodturning A random selection of the videos available- Expand Your Horizons- Easy Wood Tools has a Youtube video demonstrating the use of their negative rake scrapers on acrylics. You can see why their negative rake scrapers have gained the respect of turners! Tim Yoder posted the making of a beautiful Crater Burl Bowl. As always, Tim's videos are enjoyable and informative. New Turning Items- Jerry Marcantel (Nubsnstubs) added a video showing/describing his tailstock steady. I think we mentioned this in this past but this video shows it in action along with some of the other wood lathe holding items. Everything Else- Mike Peace added a video on turning a natural edge bowl from a green log. Love those long shavings!! I mentioned there was very little lathe work for me. It seems this project has been 1 step forward 3 steps back. I finally got the inside of that spalted maple bowl turned out and sanded. Flipped it around the turn off the recess and finish out the bottom. The strapping tape is just for safety. Didn't want to put too much pressure on the punky soft wood. Just got the bottom shaped when I heard a "pop". Two cracks (insert a very long string of Navy language here)! Went ahead and finished sanding the bottom. Then tried to fix the cracks I'll need to do some touch-up sanding around the glue joints and put some sort of finish on it. Safe turning
