Here we are, into March already. Hard to believe. The robins have been here for a couple of weeks so I guess spring can't be too far away. Our Patriot Turners- @HandyDan used his machinist skills to design and build a really useful drilling attachment for his lathe. His tailstock quill was reengineered for easier drilling- Dan received lots of comments on his work! Please check out more images and some of the things our members had to say! @RustyFN 's new lathe was delivered this week! I hope we didn't cause it to rust too badly with all of the drooling! He has it in place, fired up and makin' shavings! Our gang didn't waste any time in congratulating him and making comments! @Fred W. Hargis Jr is still practicing and getting ready to turn the table legs out of cherry. This picks up where he left off last week- Our turners have been providing lots of encouragement and advice - @AndrewB is finishing up a Pepper grinder- He is refining the jig he is using to hold the pieces while turning- Andrew turned another grinder from a 4 x 4 instead of a glued up lamination. For more information, click on the above image. For The Newbies- There are always a lot of questions about turning a green bowl from start to finish. Craft Supplies USA produced a video showing the process- Expand Your Horizons- The bowl video illustrates turning a bowl in the "tradition" fashion- the grain running across the diameter of the bowl. Another method of making bowls is to have the grain oriented vertically from the top to the bottom of the bowl. Turning end grain efficiently often calls for specialized tools. If you are interested- Last Weeks YouTube woodturning video list from Rick Turns- It was rainy and ugly out on Sunday so I had a little time to work on the revised steady rest. Spent a fair amount of time over the last couple of weeks working with Sketchup to get the dimensions correct. Have most of the pieces cut, drilled and fitted. Some parts are assembled but the most critical dimension will have to be done when all the parts are cut and clamped together. The wheels have to be centered on the headstock drive center point. Your replies have taken me to areas of turning I've never heard of. Rubber Chucky was a neat and great idea. The string center looked like a very old concept. A lot of set up. I made up something like Chucky. My tail stock is a kit that contains about 6 different centers, holes, etc. I turned down a piece of Oak and drilled a hole for a round pencil eraser. I am going to try other materials too and larger erasers. Could be a great way to hold a pointed piece.

Ok let's see if I can describe this correctly---- #1 is it safe? #2 is it practical? Question: Can you round off the corners of a square (say 12x 12 x1") from the tailstock side? I know it can be done along the axis of the bed-- but perpendicular to the axis? I saw ONE video on youtube & he turned it round pretty quickly!! He was using a carbide cutter, not HSS. Just plunged it in and cut off the corners Project: I was planning on making serving "platters". Normally they are made from a 3" thick piece of wood with the center hollowed out by using a fostner bit. But that seems to me to be an extreme waste of wood. I was planning on making rings using a parting tool or something similar and then gluing them on a 1/2-3/4" thick base. That way I could use the inside of the ring to make smaller "bowls"/rings-- to make serving dishes. So ---- is it safe & is it practical? thks smitty

As part of my offering plate project I am doing recess tenon, or expansion mode. When I resize the recess after drying , because it has turned into a football, I like to return the back before placing into the chuck again. Get some slippage because i do not want to use a point on what will be finished surface. I have tried bringing up the tailstock with a softtouch and getting this slip sometimes . Wondering if anyone has a better idea? I see there is a reversing adapter on live center , 1x8 thread from Pennstate. Also Oneway makes a adapter 1 1/4 8 x 3/4 10 which screws onto the live center. The oneway will cost about 25 more but will be the same thread as my lathe so will not have to change insert.

Gerald and I have discussed a tailstock support for delicate turning, such as tree ornaments. Your tailstock must have bearings to do this. I found some very stiff foam at Micheals that is 1" in dia and about inch long. I fashioned a holder made of oak, pressed the foam in and drilled a tapered hole to accommodate the piece. I have not tried it yet, but will report when I do.
