  1. Hi all, I've got a mystery cast iron extension table 10"×7" wide with a simple miter channel that's the same width as the one on my Shopsmith band saw. There are two half inch rods spaced 7.25" apart that insert into the main table. I wish I could post a pic, but it's my 1st post. It's somewhat similar to the model 500 saw table extension except that the pivot mechanism is somewhat like the saw table mechanism with a lock lever. There are no maker's marks or tags, just the part number 502995 on the the table underside. It green or bluish-grey in color, I think. Thanks to anyone who can help me identify this accessory piece.
  2. Anyone have a spare Shopsmith Belt Sander laying around they'd like to sell?
  3. Background: I'm currently been tasked with making several segmented bowls and will need to flatten the made up rings. I have an OLD Shopsmith 10" sanding disk and was "brainstorming" using it on a regular lathe. My 1st thought was to mount it on the tail stock with a MT2 rod with a 5/8" end. The sanding disk has a grub screw to hold it on. I'm expecting the disk to remain stationary while the wood spins. If need be, I could put a flat on the shaft to land the grub screw. Then, the gray matter said to mount it on the motorized end. Maybe through the 4 jaw chuck with a 5/8" round rod. The rod PROBABLY wouldn't need to be tapered then.(?) Has anyone successfully done something similar? And where did you get the MT2 taper "rod"? Was it successful and was it worth the effort? Also the disk would be used to help assemble the rings into the bowl. As an aside---I have access to several horizontal belt sanders. TIA Smitty
  4. I have a Shopsmith 18" jig saw that I purchased about 30 yrs ago. I need the round blade guides for the upper and the lower blade supports. It appears to be a composite or phelinoc material and is round and about 1/4" dia. I recently retired and am working on my wood working again. Shopsmith no longer supports the saw, and can't offer any suggestions. I hate to have a tool that can't be used. Does anyone have any solutions? Also what about saw blades? I have tried jigsaw/scroll saw blades but they are very narrow and do not hold very well in the jaws on the saw.
  5. I just learned I got a slow speed grinder built into my Shopsmith! How cool! Powertool Woodworking-Sharpening — Shopsmith SHOPSMITH.COM Sharpening (grinding and honing) woodworking tools is very personal and can be accomplished in many ways–you will sharpen tools the...
  6. I happened on to the Shopsmith website, and at first look it's nice! I have not dug into it yet, but the old site had a ton of broken links and outdated things going on. I know they are under new ownership now, perhaps this younger gent will take the company into the future nicely. One of my favorite Shopsmith YouTuber Scott, had a great sit down with the new owner a few months ago if you are interested in meeting the new owner Nicholas Cupps. I hope he succeeds!
  7. While I don't own nor have I ever used a SS, I do remember the glory days of ShopSmith; the demo sessions in local malls, actual SS store fronts in Indy and so on. Regardless of your opinion of SS then or now, as a company they probably generated more interest into woodworking for hobbyist than any other company. They were ahead of their time in many ways and paved the way for many woodworking retail outlets today. Love him or hate him, Scott Phillips has and continues to instill his passion for woodworking. While I don't always agree with his methods, I do watch his show and cant deny his success. He obviously has done something right to survive these many years both in his business and as a PBS show host. His long term association with one of our sponsors, Woodcraft, speaks volumes. Anyways, all my opinion but hope you to take time to watch. Great interview IMO.
  8. Great looking planer, appears brand new and available in Paradise Valley, AZ. Excellent price too! Just a heads up. $700.00 on Facebook Marketplace, if you are not a member of Facebook, I can get the number for you to contact the owner.

  10. Can I use the surface planer currently mounted on a power station, on my Shopsmith?
  11. Well, I've always wanted one as a wall mounted dedicated drill press and I now have a chance, they are asking 250 for it, if I go see it, just 10 miles from home, what should I look for with these older ones? Keeping in mind I am only interested in it being a wall mount drill press. Beside making sure it powers up, anything else to keep any eye out for?

  14. Huh! I'm frequently surprised at the tooling Shopsmith dabbled in. I had no idea that they built a portable planer. Found this one on eBay.
  15. Needs to be calibrated and set up properly but the blades, rollers, and everything else looks brand new. This nicely solves the problem of what am I going to do about the old Dewalt 733 that has seen MUCH better days. Some of the mounting hardware for the motor needs to be updated and it is missing one of the mounting bolts to hold it to the base which is easily sourced locally. Other than that, this thing is in great shape, just needs a little cleaning, maintenance, waxing and it will be ready to be put into service.
  16. It was mentioned here about Norm being on you tube. I don't watch things on the computer, but I did call up his first show for nostalgia reasons. As he went from tool to tool to make a medicine chest, he went to his Craftsman TS, then to his Craftsman RAS, and then to his drill press ...which was actually a Shopsmith set up in drill press form. I've watched a lot of Norm, and don't recall ever seeing a Shopsmith in the shop. BTW, in the first episode, the NYW actually looked a little empty without all the stuff he collected in later years.
  17. I have been meaning to get this done for a while. I needed a way to have sacrificial inserts that are easy to replace. I used the Shaper Origin to make the table insert and the the insert within it. It was easy to make about a dozen extra inserts so now I can just pop one out and set in a new one when needed. Paul
  18. Learn something new every day, a Shopsmith table saw! I have also seen a Shopsmith traditional work bench too that looked pretty robust. Found this saw on the Shopsmith sales group on Facebook. The owner says this one has the under-table Radial Arm Saw capacity. Huh!!!! Who woulda thunk!
  19. Sorry that I've been inactive for so long; had a lot on the plate in recent months. But now it's (long past!) time to repaint and rehabilitate the exterior of my 1930s-vintage home. I'm wanting to keep the same basic paint scheme of white with blue trim, but one thing I want to add is functional shutters (this is hurricane country, after all) at every window. And I'm wanting to use my ShopSmith for most of the work. (Actually, I NEED to use it as I don't have/can't afford a router table or similar accessories.) The biggest challenge I'm looking at is making the stiles; I have the (standard, over table) router package for the ShopSmith but I'm wanting to create some kind of jig which will simplify routing uniform slots at a consistent length and angle in two pieces of wood of varying lengths. I have several different sizes of window and also several of the windows have the old-style aluminum awnings over them. I do like these awnings and want to keep them, but I'm going to have to build shutters which "fold" in the middle to be stored opened and then unfold to protect the window when in use. Looks like it should just be a problem of building a pair of mid-rails and hinging them horizontally. I also have questions about wood selection; I'm intending to simply paint these so would softwood (pine) be a good long-term choice? Any alternatives I should consider? (I shouldn't have to say this these days, but the budget's tight!)
  20. You might remember that a couple of weeks ago I replaced my workbench with a smaller one. This change opened up enough floor space to add a free standing bandsaw. I have a ShopSmith bandsaw currently that does not meet my needs, mainly this is due to the 6" depth of cut. The new saw needs to have 12-14" depth of cut to rough out bowl blanks. I am limited to 120v and 7'8" overall height. I've been doing some research and found one that looks like it might fit the bill. I'm asking for the benefit of your experience in choosing the right saw. Has anyone used this saw? Any concerns about the Grizzly brand? This saw is the runner up but I know virtually nothing about the ShopFox brand. Any reason to choose one over the other? I would much rather buy American but I'm not sure that's possible anymore. Do you know of a better choice for this specific application? .40
  21. I received a pleasant phone call from Shopsmith a few days ago. It was out of the blue. Typically if I don't recognize the number on my cell I just ignore it, but this one came through and was not flagged as spam, so I just felt like picking it up, and on the other end was a really nice Shopsmith gal. She introduced herself and asked if I was in need of any supplies, or upgrades, and if I was happy with my Shopsmith and prior purchases from their online store. I told her all is well, and at this time I am not in need of anything, and she thanked me and after some more courtesies, we hung up. It was so off the wall, and nice to be contacted by them. I am sure they are trying to drum up business, and this follow up was hoping to generate an order, but her genuine personality fits the small USA company. Her phone call has prompted me to visit their online store and I am looking at a few things for my SS. I know I could go out to the second hand market for most of what I need, but if I can I'll purchase from their online store, to do my small part in hopefully helping a USA company stay alive.
  22. Hello to all my ShopSmith brethren. If you are watching/reading some of the same threads that I am, Headhunter has made a beautiful Walnut Kissmas Tree. I have been asked by me Missus to try and make one, also. Buying final dimension Walnut from Woodcraft is RAAATHER expensive. Maybe it’s time I took the training wheels off and tried to be a real WW’er, so if I get to the point where I buy some Walnut by the board foot, and dimension it myself, I may have to do some resawing. My bandsaw is the Shopsmith one. What blade (s) would you all recommend? When I bought the SS I bought multiple bandsaw blades. I have so far only used the 1/4 inch one. I believe for resawing you want the widest possible blade? Any thoughts/opinions/advice/hints to learn me how to do this would be appreciated. Thank you, Artie
  23. This is new on me, perusing the Shopsmith site, and saw they have a shorty going on now. Ya I know you can build your own shorty, aint that hard, but still, it's just kinda cool they are answering a demand. https://www.shopsmith.com/mark4/m4-buy-now.htm
  24. Hello wonderful community! The Shopsmith Forum is now open, thank you to all who helped make this happen. Cheers!
  25. So I stumbled across a deal that was too good to pass up. I found a Mark V - 510 with a bandsaw, Belt Sander, Jointer, and a whole bunch of extra stuff. Chucks, Turning Chisels, dust collector hookups, sanding discs, blades, sand paper, even an apron and windbreaker. Lots of parts / pieces, extra support tables, 2 fences, manuals, instructional videos…the list goes on. This will probably spend most of its time as a drill press or lathe which are the two big things I didn’t have before. but the belt sander has some potential.
