This weekend is the beginning of fall and it’s hard to tell here. Yesterday was a record setting day for temperatures, we hit 100. I’m not a fan of real cold weather but I could take a break from these long super hot days. My AC is working overtime. We finished the table with the metal base and expecting it to be picked up today. It has one bench and the will use chairs on the other side. Today we will finish up a Green Egg Smoker table made of Cedar. Thats going to be about it this weekend. Saturday I’m traveling to Talladega, Alabama to CMP Range to shoot in the GLOCK XXV match as part of the GSSF. They are expecting some 200 shooters and the range is located behind the Talladega Motor Sports Speedway. Looks like it will be a long hot day but I’m excited to get the opportunity. So so what’s on your agenda this weekend. Share your projects and pictures that you are working on. We all love to see them and hear about what your doing. This weekend begins dove season here in Alabama so I’m planning on being in a corn field at noon Saturday for some shooting fun. Probably wont get a lot of shop work done so I’m going to the shop today for a while and help work on more of the oak tables. Two more tops are stained and about ready to be mounted to the bases. So that’s what’s happening here this weekend and in the shop, what’s on your agenda? All of us here at TPW love to hear about your projects, so share your photos and agenda with us. As I peruse my endless supply of the old Workbench Magazine, I come across some wonderfully fun articles, many that still pertain to our techniques in woodworking today. And when I do I like to share them here. So here goes, check out this very cool, old article from a Workbench Magazine 1965 Sept-Oct issue. How to use a wood lathe. Have fun! This is a scanned document of the now defunct Workbench Magazine of this era. Permission was granted by the new Workbench Publication for The Patriot Woodworker community to copy and use the old Workbench Magazine at our pleasure, and for free distribution and re-use. I love cobblers benches, dad made one many years ago for uncle, and it turned out to be the discussion of many a party and get together. You can use the cobblers bench for a coffee table, end table, or even to work on in a real life working environment. The schematics of this plan are good, they assume the builder already has a grasp on the fundamentals of woodworking. Have fun! -

Did a little turning this week, getting ready for that church craft show. These are called "Dibbles" or "Dibbers" and are used by gardeners for making holes to plant bulbs/seeds. These are roughly 8" long and a little over 1" in diameter. The rings are 1" apart to assist in the planting depth. I used a wire "Garotte" to burn the marks, thus making them more visible. Made from hard Maple that had dark streaks. I made 10 of these. Maybe I can sell them for $5 each. The finish is a bee's wax/mineral combo. On a few of these, I used my Sorby spiraling tool to make "threads". The one on the right was my first attempt. It came out the best of all of the ones I made- beginners luck! The threads are straight but on the other turnings, the threads are wavy. You can see this on the left turning. Not sure what I was doing wrong. If anyone has one of these tools, I would appreciate tips/advice. I'm also making a few bottle stoppers. I have some Spalted Maple that is thick enough for turning. Post pix of them next week.
