  1. Our member @Gerald is recovering from knee surgery and some complications. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker decided to get a head start on next years Christmas ornaments! Steve does awesome turnings and embellishments. Check out our member's comments- @RustyFN asked a question concerning a specific bowl saver system. If you can give him some information, I'm sure he would appreciate it. @knockonit posted some of his recently turned rolling pins in the "What's On Your Workbench" forum. You can see his post at- @Grandpadave52 gave us a heads up on a video from Tom Silva (This Old House). Tom makes a segmented bowl. Dave's post is here- We've had entries in both our continuing threads of lathe projects. From "What's On Your Lathe" an almost finished platter And from the "Off The Lathe And Just Finished" thread- @RustyFN showed us his sweet pyrography work on his latest bowl- Also posted was a little, odd shaped walnut bowl- You can catchup on this thread at- What’s Coming Up- Just after the first of the month and the "4-Ways" video series continues. From Sam Angelo From Tomislav Tomasic From Richard Raffan- From Mike Peace- Free web presentation from All Things Woodturning- Registration link- https://streamyard.com/watch/gGs2fUP3i5Fq?receiptful=65c254ccf68490003ed627d1&utm_source=CM Commerce&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter-314&utm_term=newsletter&utm_content=other&receiptfultype=newsletter For The Newbies- A turning tip for finishing, from Lyle Jamieson- Expand Your Horizons- I saw this finished item on a couple of social media sites and was intrigued by how it was made. Then this popped up! Tim Yoder turned a "bowl from a board" In the video he used a device from Ron Brown's Best. https://longworthchuck.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=64 Kind of a neat idea from Alan Stratton. I'm always amazed at how easily he make it look to turn spheres. New Turning Items- From Ron Brown's Best- And a sale on sanding supplies from Woodturners Wonders- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/ultimate-sanding-system?_kx=gV5SF2As_3IwtBi5TrpHVQM0F3UvGVbQKzhWGippDlk%3D.VJvU8R Everything Else- Today was laser day in my shop. Had several turnings and other stuff that needed signed/dated. The little scissor lift works really well for focus adjustments. I usually wait until I have several items as it requires a little space to set up everything. Safe turning
  2. Not much to report this week. Been TDY to Coop Cleaning as relatives are visiting for Thanksgiving. Our Patriot Turners- @calabrese55 posted a new segmented form in our "What's On Your Lathe" thread. This one is a mixed media work. Mike tells us a little more about the acrylics and his go-to guy for information in his post- @RustyFN shares his very first basket weave illusion turning and it is Awesome! He posted it here- I know my old eyes would be crossed before the first row was finished! @HandyDan and @Smallpatch posted some of their Christmas ornaments Check out the comments at- New member @knightwolf is looking for some help in locating a part for a Delta lathe. Please see his post and if you can provide assistance he would certainly appreciate it- What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to registration and more information- For The Newbies- The question about food safe finishes comes up quite a lot. This article from Wood Magazine has some good information- https://www.woodmagazine.com/materials-guide/finishes/is-your-finish-food-safe?fbclid=IwAR0o48QrIVH14qM2EvSXQfu7w6aDoV9_Iz_2TAhglBQ4iD4cAFikKGzBwdY Expand Your Horizons- Carl Jacobson demonstrates the use of the Joyner Off Center Jig- New Turning Items- Maybe Santa is hording all the new stuff until after Thanksgiving Everything Else- From Ron Brown's newsletter- Figuring It Out – How To Succeed At The Small Stuff Success in many small things can add up to success in big stuff. The advice that follows is applicable to non-life-threatening situations, small undertakings, and must be tempered with wisdom. If failure could result in injury, substantial financial loss, or divorce, don’t do it! We are not given the gift of seeing the end from the beginning most of the time. Nor are we granted understanding in advance exactly how we will get there. Many times, our adventure starts with nothing more than hope and faith that we will figure it out along the way. The key is to take some time to think it through as best you can, then begin. Now that you’ve started, a pause after each step will reveal how to proceed with the next step. Before you know it, you will have figured it out as you went and chalked up another success. As an example: your project is to turn a cube into a 3-winged bowl and you’ve only seen the video, you’ve never actually attempted this method before. You are unsure what to do next. Mount your blank and start. You made an outline while watching the video so you have a rough idea of what to do first, second, etc. Go for it! You will figure it out. The next one will be much easier and so on. Don’t let yourself be a victim of “Paralysis of Analysis.” Gather the necessary materials and tools, give it an appropriate amount of thought, then start. Even if you do it wrong the first time, you will figure it out along the way. I love to invent stuff and solve problems, especially for the turning community. I rarely know how my approach to a problem will turn out in the end. I do my research to understand everyone else's approach then I develop my unique approach to make it better, easier, safer, and sometimes faster. The marketable jig, fixture, or tool seldom resembles the first few attempts. I average between 8 and 10 prototypes before I discover one that works the way I intend and doesn’t do any of the bad things the first ones did. Plus, it has to look way cool! I figured it out along the way. If I never get started with the first one, I never get to number ten so you can do things easier, faster, and safer. There are always unintended consequences with every project and I adjust accordingly. I often can’t see the challenge until I get to that step. Patience and persistence coupled with wisdom and insight carry me through. Safe turning
  3. I decided we needed a traveling trophy for my wife's Fantasy Football League at her office. Ecspecialy since we (a.k.a I) won it the last 2 years and thought it would be fun for bragging rights. And mostly because i wanted to see if i could make one. It has been a fun project so far and still have to make the base. I want it to resemble the Lombardi trophy when I'm done. My take on the project so far has been: I would do it a little different next time. Maybe precut the pieces the long way. Be a little more selective with the wood I choose. There were some cracks towards the middle i did not see. I havent used my lathe much in the past and not at all in the last 3 years. I have a hard time getting the hang of sharpening my tools. I also have to do the laces a little different as that was a little tedious. A couple questions for you guys if you dont mind is, Is it worth getting tools with the carbide tips? Do you have any suggestions for sharpening tools, or is it just practice? I will post some pictures when i get the base done.
  4. If you haven't seen the post, we are beginning our summer fundraiser to help support the operations here at the Patriot. Please consider donating to this worthy cause and maybe be lucky enough to walk away with some cool prizes- Our Patriot Turners- @nevinc posted a couple of beautiful bowls- Head on over to his post and check out additional images. @calabrese55 finished up that gorgeous segmented bowl. What a beauty! Check out his post to see what his plans are for this turning- @Gerald posted a vessel he is doing on the "What's On Your Lathe" forum. His image shows the business end of his hollowing rig and the laser attachment- @forty_caliber turned some more bowls fresh from the blanks in his drying kiln. I really like how he does the feet on these- There are more images in his post- What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration- These first two might be a bit of a drive- If you missed Cindy Drozda's live presentation with Carl Jacobson. She has it posted on YouTube- For The Newbies- Drilling on the lathe may not require a Jacob's chuck, especially for smaller diameter bits. Tim Yoder demonstrates- Tim also shows a quick and easy way to round over the ends of handles- Pretty neat explanation about lathe speed- Kent Weakley on the importance of good lighting. 5. Just about the time of the year when I start having dreams of beginning another school year- and all the things that can go wrong! Our Patriot Turners- @calabrese55 posted one of his segmented bowls in the "What's On Your Weekend Agenda". I love the combination of colors! His post has more images. Check it out here- @Headhunter posted a really neat setup for assisting in making square cuts across a log. He posted it in our "General Woodworking" forum but said it was OK to share it here Looks like it can be helpful for us turners- @Gerald finished up the turnings and dice boards he was commissioned to make I never hear of either of these items. Thankfully, Gerald explained their uses. Gerald also started a discussion about project ideas. He wondered how/if we saved pictures/drawings to be inspirations for our own turnings. He received lots of great comments and examples. Please check out his post and add your thoughts to the others- We are still getting entries on out "What's On Your Lathe" forum. This one from @forty_caliber @John Hechel is passing on his turning skills to a younger generation. What a wonderful way to keep turning alive! 6. Lots happening with our turners this week! Our Patriot Turners- We have a new member at the Patriot who is also a turner! @calabrese55 showed us some of his work when he introduced himself. How about this beautiful segmented turning- Check out his post and give him a Patriot welcome! He also posted another bowl in our "Monday Morning" forum- Check it out here- Our "What's On Your Lathe" was also hot this week. New posts start here- Some of the images from @teesquare, @forty_caliber and @calabrese55 @Steve Krumanaker turned a cane for his daughter and his son cast the knob. Andy his an expert on casting! See the cane and the back story in Steve's post- Our resident ornament expert, @Ron Altier, gave us his impressions on turning bamboo. Ron's conclusions are that's it's probably not the best overall species for turning. In one of our posts, there was a mention of the Lichtenberg burning process. @Gerald was kind enough to do a little research on safety when doing this. The process, when ALL safety precautions are observed, can create beautiful patterns. High voltage is dangerous when we become complacent. My neighbor, the electrical safety training officer in our borough, was electrocuted on the job. Insulation, isolation, incomplete human electrical path and full awareness are a must. This is what Gerald found- What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration- For The Newbies- Richard Raffan turns a nice little shallow dish in real time. Mike Peace shows how to turn a simple but elegant lidded box. He even makes a special chuck to hold one of the pieces. Holding turnings can be challenge. Home made chucks supplement purchased ones. Did a little more digging and found something I didn't expect in a post by Kent Weakley. About have way through the article there is information comparing Linseed Oil to Boiled Linseed Oil. I'll let you decide about what/when you use the ingredients- https://turnawoodbowl.com/my-favorite-food-safe-wood-finish-waterproof-almost/ Another social media article popped up about the difficulty between turning large bowls vs. small bowls. Most of the respondents felt small bowls were more difficult. No one told Richard Raffan that! A beautiful maple burl bowl from Tim Yoder- New Turning Items- Couldn't find anything new but I did notice that Niles Bottle Stoppers have added some Yorkshire Grit products. Our generous sponsor Easy Wood Tools ( @Jordan Martindale ) is now the US source for this great sanding finish! Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Got to play at the lathe the other day. Everyone was making those Gnomes/Gonks. Rusty got lots of great comments and answered some questions in this post- Rusty's Mrs. really keeps him busy cranking out presents (I know the feeling) and this one is a winner- Rusty explains more in his post- @PostalTom completed the chess set for his grandson. This will surely become a family heirloom. Tom explains there were a lot of "firsts" in this project- What’s Coming Up- Click on the image for more information- If I ever won the lottery, I know what I would spent some of it on- For The Newbies- Some sanding tips from Richard Raffan- Cute little turned characters from Mike Peace- Expand Your Horizons- Make a neat ornament and practice you thread chasing skills with this Mike Peace project- Looking for ways to enhance your turning designs? Alan Stratton has some thoughts- New Turning Items- The bronze threaded rings are now available from Niles Bottle Stoppers- https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/threaded-inserts-for-urns/ Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Safe turning
  9. My wife wants me to make a segmented bowl similar to the one I made her. I have the six rings glued together, 18 segments in each ring. The rings are 12” in diameter. They are walnut and cherry. I am thinking a solid cherry bottom.
  10. I made a cutting board that came apart. I took one of the smaller pieces and made a plate. Almost went too far. When I blew it off I could feel airr going through to the other side.
  11. Lew I found all that math in the egg video very boring. It left me wondering why go to all that trouble for an egg when he even said real eggs do not comply with the math. But the inspiration was the segmented egg. I have all these small scraps and need a use. Like any project just not enough of the right kind of scraps do cut some more. Have to work on glue ups as had a void. So used CA to cure that. Lacquer for finish and away we go. Man what kind of chicken laid that? Thinking maybe a little exotic in the next batch. Just so much glueing for just a few minutes turning. Mmmmm wonder if could turn some of the blocks in glue up sideways. Yeah the ideas keep rolling. By the way before the questions come in woods : river birch, walnut, cherry.
  12. Well, one more day and March will be in the books... Typical spring weather here in PA. This morning we were under a winter weather advisory. Tomorrow afternoon a severe thunder storm watch. Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker said he finally mastered the operation of a Throw Top. Some of our members sympathized with Steve's predicament. Check out the post at- Steve continued his adventures in gnome turning. He added his unique touch to this one- Along with his post was a challenge to guess the source of the "hair". @Gerald added a great comment to last week's "Wednesday's..." post. His idea was that we might share our thought process of determining what the final piece will look like when starting with a chunk of wood. I'll try to start something this week and hope our turners will share their ideas. What’s Coming Up- Several upcoming events. Click on the images for the links to more information and registrations. For The Newbies- Mike Peace has another video to help us with lathe problems. This one covers the banjo- Cindy Drozda talks about her Vortex and Pyramid Tools. From a live presentation- Expand Your Horizons- You say you'd like to try segmented turning? Check this out- Alan Stratton has a cute video just in time for Easter- Turned finials are a great way to add pizzazz to hollow forms. But, how to turn them really thin and delicate without breaking? Cap'n Eddie has a tip- New Turning Items- This isn't exclusively for turning but certainly can be used to get those glued up blanks on the lathe a little quicker. Big thanks to @Gene Howe for the heads up- Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- A couple of weeks ago, Alan Stratton, posted a project where he added Celtic Knots to a segmented turning. Using his jig concept to make my own version, I've been playing around with some turnings. My first attempt- Just some glued up scraps and quickly turned to see if the knot would look OK. Second blank. Not sure how it will look as I goofed on one of the setups. This one might become a small sugar bowl or a "pepper cellar" Working on getting a blog written up with detailed process shots. Safe turning
  13. For our Irish members, Happy St. Patrick's Day! (Thursday!) Getting this out a little early today as relatives are expected shortly and staying the rest of the week. Check our Steve's post and the comments from our turners- @jthornton has been showing us some of his turnings and his pampered chickens! Here's one of his gorgeous segmented bowls. He gives us a look at his glue-up procedure- And in this post he goes into more detail about his segment sled used to turn these bowls- What’s Coming Up- Cindy Drozda reminds us the Spring Vendor Showcase is coming up in a couple of weeks. Click on the above image for the link to registration. Don't forget about "Meet The Turner" event this weekend March 19 and 20. Click on the above image for the link to more information. For The Newbies- Cindy Drozda posted a video demonstrating using negative rake scrapers to get a perfect fit. This link takes you to Facebook videos, hope it works for everyone- https://www.facebook.com/cindy.drozda.3/videos/298113892412909/ Expand Your Horizons- Mr. David Reed Smith creates fantastic turnings and always has some interesting jigs to help with making them. 14. So my sister saw the bowl and asked me to make her and my other sister a bowl. I was not happy with the result of using the miter gauge to make the segments so I did some research and discovered wedge sleds and studied them for a few days and didn't really like exactly what I found so I designed something a bit different. There's a lot of videos on how to make them but they seemed inaccurate at best. I did some CAD work and came up with this CAD design for a wedge sled. Cutting from the bottom the holes and slot. I added a hand hold and something to secure the right edge. First test cut with some scrap wood, I'm a happy camper... I wanted to be in control of the segment as it's cut off and not let it have a burr. It's just MDF nothing fancy but super accurate as far as I can tell. This is a 10 segment black walnut ring I cut on the wedge sled. I might be tricked into making a few wedge sleds for cost it there is any interest in them. I'd just make the base and the fences on my CNC mill you would need to make the hand hold and supply the hardware and make the miter slot and insert. I have a spreadsheet to calculate the length and width of the segments as soon as I put that on my web site I'll add a link here. This is the calculations for the wedges. Needless to say I was very happy with the results. Now on to the bowls... what a mess under the router table but that's been cleaned up by now. Now I couldn't send my sisters a one of a kind bowl without engraving something from their brother on the bottom of the bowl so I had to come up with a way to hold the bowls while making the bottom perfectly flat and engraving the message. V-Carve works best with a level surface and I'm not good enough on the lathe to do that so I did it on the mill. The engraving jig clamps. I put a center mark in the bottom of the bowl while it was on the screw chuck during Op #1. I used that center to fix the X0 location of the bowl on the mill. The jig is 8" deep so Y-4 is the center of the bowl for engraving. Making the bottom flat This one is for my wife! For my sisters JT
  15. Hasn't been this busy on our forum in quite a while so let's just jump right in! Our Patriot Turners- We have had a new sub-forum added to the Woodturners Forum. The Ringmaster sub-forum is dedicated to those makers who create bowls using the Ringmaster method. You can find it listed under the main Woodturners Forum- https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/forum/98-ringmaster-turning/ Let's see some of those beautiful creations!! @Gerald gave us a look at a commissioned bowl he is in the process of turning- Gerald tells us about the species and more in his post as well as a bit about his "new" kiln- Gerald also posted an interesting article by Ron Brown providing some additional thoughts on Carbide tipped tools. We have had several insightful discussions here on the forum comparing traditional and carbide tools. @FrederickH posted a question to the group about using a fluted parting tool. Several of our members provided their insights. If you can help out Rick, give him your thoughts at- One of our newer members @adot45 gave us a look at his latest fantastic turning. Please see his post and welcome him to the forum! More about Dave and some additional images are in this post- And more here- Even @smitty10101 is getting into the stacked ring bowls! 16. Cherry and Spalted Red Oak Bowl. 5 1/2 x 9 1/4 One coat of wipe on poly, doesn't start to really shine till the 3 coat and then I add another. It's still on the waste block. I'm disappointed in the contrast, both look great by themselves but combining them in a bowl didn't work for me.

Sometime back, we included an earlier video on the same topic by Mr. Conover. Not sure what changed, but, Mr. Conover seems to have a little more positive opinion on the carbide tools in this video. Capt. recently added a video on tips and hints of CA finishes- New Turning Items- Didn't come up with anything, although, the Rubber Chucky website Rusty mentioned does have an alert on their homepage to watch for some new products. Everything Else- Rick Turns You Tube woodturning videos for the past 2 weeks- Before we left, I did have a chance to finish up the little spalted elm bowl. This is what I found when I got home- They stayed most of the afternoon! Safe turning and stay well
  19. I occasionally go to Good Will to look for wood pieces. I have found some exotic wood and some domestic great wood like Walnut, Cherry, etc. I repurpose the wood and usually turn it down on my lathe. This morning I found a bowl about 7" dia x 3" high. As you can see from the pictures, it is a piece that took a lot of time, thought and care to make. I did look up his name but did not get any results. Anyway, I intend to clean it up, shine it up and give it to my wife. She will use it to keep some of her sewing needs. I will be careful not to disturb the hand painted label on the bottom. This piece took a lot of planning, cutting, glueing and assembly........not to mention turning and all that goes with it. Even the printing looks hand painted. A piece of wood art for $3.
  20. Just a reminder that we are about 2 weeks into our summer raffle to help offset the costs of running the Patriot site. If you haven't already picked up your tickets for some awesome prizes, here's the scoop! Sill a couple of cracks that will need taken care of At this point I normally submerge the piece in the soap and water solution for a couple of days and then on to drying in a paper bag with shavings. Turned out my pot is only 12" in diameter!. I CA'ed the cracks, wrapped the bowl in stretch wrap and put it in my little drying box (ala Rick Turns). Then for the cleanup! Safe turning and stay well

As always, Ron's projects are fantastic and use a variety of wood species. Lots of great comments about this on- @FlGatorwood received some sad news from a classmate. He decided to brighten her day with a "care package". Steve originally posted this in General Woodworking forum but I thought our turners would appreciate seeing what he made.- @Gunny puts a lot of us to shame with his organizational skills. He posted a utilitarian project he made on the lathe. Those projects that help us get things done are great to see (and steal)! Check out Curtis' post to see what this is used for. @Gerald finished up the coffee bar for his Mrs. He called it a coffee bar but I think it's more of a Coffee Shrine! Judging from the smile, I think she is happy. The entire project can be seen here- What’s Coming Up- https://www.woodturner.org/Woodturner/WIT/WIT-Presents-Registration.aspx Mike Waldt is changing the format of his live presentations. 22. RustyFN

    New bowl

Been working on this one for the last week.
  23. I finished my second one. Made a few mistakes. I wanted to make the bottom a checkered pattern. Half way through the first cut it hit me that there are only five pieces and I needed six to make the checkered pattern. I made the rest of the cuts and put a thin walnut strip in. I wanted to make the inside a barrel like the outside but was having trouble so I left it straight. It is 13” in diameter and 5” tall.
  24. Lots happening with our turners this week... Our Patriot Turners- @FrederickH posted a project in the woodworking section. He is making a box for his lathe chuck/jaws. From all the comments and ideas, I thought maybe our turners would like to see what he made and all the other ideas form his post- You can see the build and how he finished the inside to hold his chuck- @Smallpatch showed us his in progress steady rest. Looks like it is going to be a nice one too- Jess' post contains images of his build, lots of comments from our group and some great music! New member @bradleyheathhays asked for our opinion on a lathe he is considering buying. Check out his post and maybe you can provide some input to help him make a choice- @RustyFN has been really busy in his shop putting that new lathe through its paces! Rust is trying some outboard turning by making a large bowl/platter- Lots of great comments on this one- Unfortunately, not every one of Rusty's projects came out as planned. His efforts in turning a winged bowl were all for naught- I think we've all been there, and our members were sympathetic- While Rusty was working, he tried a new tool, for him. He used a round nose scraper which lead him to post a question to our members. As always, our turners had super advice- As is often pointed out here in the Woodturners forum, there is no substitute for learning from an experienced turner. Books and DVD's are helpful but the interaction between teacher and student cannot be overstated. Rusty proves that point in his post describing his experience with his first turner's club meeting. @AndrewB Finished up his new lathe workbench and started in on another pepper grinder. This one is a real beauty. Andrew is getting these down to a science! Check out his post for the production images as his project progresses. It is from Axminster- https://www.axminstertools.com/us/woodcut-pro-mount-carving-stand-105257?glCountry=US&glCurrency=USD Woodturners Wonders has Rikon items on sale. https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/sales Everything Else- Rick Turns YouTube video list from last week- I finished up the last piece of nice cherry. Someone actually asked to buy it! Safe turning and stay well
  25. This is my first attempt at a segmented bowl. It was fun. I enjoyed the process. The bottom is Padauk and I think the rest is some cherry I had laying around. I liked not having a mountain of shavings and it was fairly quick to turn.
