Here's Lyle Jamieson demonstrating turning a similar bowl with a natural edge. Turning a bowl from wet/green wood is mostly a two step process. Rough turn and then allowing the moisture to equalize before finishing. Here is Sam Angelo's process- Last week we mentioned a method of sealing bowls/vessels using milk. This is an update from Debbie Coull Experiment in sealing wood with milk update: IT WORKED !!!! Woohoooooo! The wood surface has a waxy feel. Smooth. Absolutely no odour. The wood was sycamore, but I doubt it matters. Stone age man would have used whatever was the local wood. I will now use this daily and plan to make more. Maybe a cup to see if it adversely flavours tea, but I doubt it. The method the worked was I submerged in milk and simmered for 2 hours, then left in the milk overnight. I used semi skimmed, but I doubt that matters as it's the milk protein (casein) that seals the wood. The next day i rinsed with fresh water and left to dry. It was incredibly heavy now, having almost doubled it's original weight. I left it to dry for a few days. Here is the porridge test (scientific test used by bears). Perhaps others could maybe use this for their food bowls. I'm really pleased this worked, and I would have persevered until I figured it out. Ancient techniques may be lost in time - but they definitely have their merits. I did about 5 straight hours of sanding, renovating lawn furniture. The 3M-Cub2 disk finally gave out after 5 hours, the backing turning to lint. I put a junk disk (came with the sander) on it: it lasted about 15 minutes, then started disintegrating. The 3M-C2 face was still abrasive after failure; the cheapo was almost as smooth as the proverbial north-bound baby's south end. Simplifies my purchasing habits!

The tree had special meaning to the owners. The pieces supplied had been left outside and were splitting pretty bad but I was able to get some small blanks. Two bowls are rough turned and soaking in soap/water. The third is hopefully destined to become a natural edge bowl. Walnut doesn't hold on to its bark really well and the bark is quite thick. I was hoping this could go from start to finish but that's not going to happen. Shaped the outside and applied CA the cambium area around the piece Hoping to keep the bark in place, I used my Dremel tool and created a circular opening through the bark, into the sap wood. Then loaded the "moat" with CA to soak into the wood. I'll keep this in a plastic bag until I get back to it. It may just be a miserable failure. Time will tell. Safe turning and stay well

Just realized that yesterday was 55 years ago that I was discharged from the Navy. Left Treasure Island and took a 3 day train ride across this beautiful country. That was the year of the airline strike and there were no commercial flights anywhere. Our Patriot Turners- @AndrewB has been busy casting and turning resin. He showed us his cast blanks and they turned out perfect- Andrew describes the process in this post- From this casting he is turning a "dragon's egg"- More about the process in this post- @smitty10101 would like to do some "inside-out" turnings and asked our gang for some help. He has received several suggestions. If you do these types of turning, please hop over to Smitty's post and chime in- @HandyDan is always making such neat projects for his family. Walked down to the garden this morning and I see the garlic is starting to poke through the leaf mulch. I guess spring can't be too far away. Don't forget to turn your clocks forward this Saturday night or you will be late to Sunday School! Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald took some time to rearrange his turning area. No easy feat and he will probably looking for where he put stuff for some time to come! Our members all sympathized with the amount of work required to do this. You can see their comments in Gerald's post- @Masonsailor Took a break from his media room redo and played on the lathe. Paul decided to turn a Top and it's a beauty. Our turners had lots of questions and comments about how the hardware and his processes. Check out Paul's post, here- A couple of weeks ago @Bob Hodge was asking about wet sanding techniques and products. Well, Bob made the leap and he tells us about his results. We appreciate Bob's follow-up and giving us his findings- @RustyFN Tried his hand at segmented turning. He said it was his first time at this but judging from the results, I have to wonder . As you might expect, the kudos were flying for this beauty! Rusty also gave us an insight into some of his processes for cutting the segments- In one of our other forums, Rusty shared his lumber score. I always buy the 3X when I can find as it got scarce a few years ago and now seems is most everywhere again.

It was finally time to add the sand paper to the drum. Having decided on a Velcro (hook and loop) system, it was off to Super Grit http://www.supergrit.com/ . Their store is only a half an hour drive from here. The hook portion required 5 feet of material. This PSA stuff is 4” wide and is $2/foot. Also bought 3 different grits of the 3” wide loop paper. Their minimum purchase is 3 yards but at between $1.50 to $2.00 a yard it is reasonable. It took about 73” to wrap the drum but I think I can get it down to 72” and be able to get 2 applications from 4 yards. The first step was to clean the PVC drum; started with mineral spirits then denatured alcohol. Next, carefully wrap the hook material, press it down, and allow it to “rest” overnight to get maximum adhesion. (Velcro front, Velcro rear1) The above pictures also show the cross members added to the bottom of the frame for stability; also, another view of the table’s rear support/adjustment bracket as well as the screws holding the table front to the height adjustment. Next, wrap the paper- this is 40 grit. Anchor BOTH ends. We have dust! (dust) All day, I had been working from the rear of the sander. When it came time for the live fire test, I had anchored what I thought to be the leading edge of the paper- Wrong! As soon as the drum got some speed, the paper lifted and re-wrapped backwards around the drum. Fortunately, it did not tear but it did knock off some of the grit. Note to self- anchor both ends. (mistake) Had to buy the hook and loop system.

on the sanding blocks... Sherwin Williams guy ask me one day some time ago to take this flexible sand paper and give it a try and let them know what I think of it.. It was quick some time before I went to give him my thoughts. So, he said lets hear it...First off I said I haven't been able to wear out that small two sheets you gave me and second though is it works better on uneven surfaces better than anything I have ever used.....period...It is pricey but I don't have to buy it very often. I read where guy had bought a machine to cut sheets of sand paper for his sanding block...I never realized anyone would spend money on something to do a simple task..I was shown this the first day I went to work at a furniture store in 1954 and still do this every day in the shop when using sanding blocks. I have 5 3M sanding blocks I bought around 1960 and 4 of them I still use all the time. One, a flap work out this year. A person will learn to keep different grits available to save time.. fold the paper over then crease it with the back of the rubber block a few times then fold it back over the other way a time or two then lay it on the edge of the table saw an tear it apart. I think this was a young lad on Superjocks wood site who had spent money to get his paper sized?? But I will have to use sizzors for this 3M p220 flexible stuff so there you go.

I know this is more than likely a silly question. however I am going to ask it anyways, because I am like that lol. When you sand a project how do you know when you are done. do you go from the coarsest grit to the lowest all the time or is it dependent on the wood and its softness? how do you know when it is time to go to a lower grit sandpaper? The reason I am asking is because every time I feel like I have sanded enough and I coat it there always seems to me that I should have sanded it more. Well thanks for those who take the time to answer my question.
