Whew! Is it ever hot out side. Back porch thermometer, in the shade, reads 98°! Good thing I painted 150 feet of chain link fence yesterday when it was only 95°!! Expand Your Horizons- Last week's post included a tip from Lyle Jamieson about making a secure glue block connection. In this video Jim Rodgers demonstrates another method of connecting to a glue block- Another scoop from Alan Stratton. This one uses offset turning and a couple of neat jigs. Also, check out Alan's method for turning spheres- WITHOUT a jig! I tried pure beeswax on these an buffed them with an old T-shirt but they feel sticky. I think I will burnish them with shavings, again, and see what they look like. I have some Hampshire Sheen wax that might be better. My predicament now is how to reverse chuck them, to finish the bottoms. The entry holes are not identical in diameter. Thinking on making an expandable piece to fit into the holes The piece will need to be adjustable to take care of the minor variations in diameter. Safe turning

Relatives gone but the remainder of the week already scheduled with appointments. Our Patriot Turners- Our turners have been busy with projects and new journeys @Gerald is learning the ins-and-outs of his new JaHo jig. He posted a couple of cool bowl images and asked our opinion on the painting scheme- His post received lots of comments. Our turners are not shy offering their opinions! Check out his post and give him your input! @keithlong asked us for some leads on mechanical pencil kits. He has been asked to turn a special type of pencil. If you have any ideas for sources for these kits, Keith would appreciate any input- @Fred W. Hargis Jr has started down the slippery slope of wood turning ! He asked our group for some ideas on turning knobs. Specifically, how is the best way to hold the knob during the urning process. A lot of us chimed in with various suggestions and information sources. Finally started on the last piece of walnut root ball. This piece has son nice natural edge but just could not incorporate it all into this bowl and the piece has too many cracks to make a hollow form. Color on one side is out of this world but has a terrible odor. Like the latrine. Hope that disappears as it dries. Was in a hurry to get in to supper so did not get a final first turn picture.

Have had a small walnut root ball for several months and decided yesterday to at least cut it. One piece seemed well suited for a hollow form. It had a crack but gives me a chance to test some powders to color epoxy and fill that crack. It turned out that the crack went almost full length but that did not interfere with hollowing like the rocks. First noticed at about 2 inches from the bottom. I think there were several smaller ones also. The big one cause me to have to resharpen two hss bits and destroy a Hunter bit. that spec below the hollow form is the approximately thumbnail size rock.
