Weekend show was almost a bust. Started at 3 and rain started 4:30 , power out at 5. So we ate and took our time packing. Had been thinking of making French Rolling Pin for a while and finally did it. Not as fancy as Lew's tho. These are only 16 inch so we will see if they sell sometime. Then a friend showed me a cookie rolling pin Now for the friendship bowls. I tried to make each one unique. From dye to dry brush and even some mica powder and woodburning. All bowls are persimmon. Sized 3 to 4 inch. The collar on this one I carved to look like candle wax running down and now thinking of adding a candle.

This is the care package that I made up for my classmate friend. I hope this puts a smile on her face and some bounce in her step. This was fun for me. Rolling pin made of scraps of cherry and pear. Writing pens, one of pine, one of pear, and one of mahogany. The ornament is mahogany. Those of you with a Shopsmith, show us what you have. Looking forward to seeing your posts of "made on a Shopsmith" real soon.

After many months of waiting and drying, they are finally finished and just in time. I, too, am finished for a few days. But, here is where this journey began. This is the trunk of one Bradford pear tree that grew near the flagpole of our church and school. At this point of the I have coated with 2 coats of Anchor Seal that I purchased from Walmart online. $30 per gallon April 2020. In August of 2020, I cut those stumps into 2" X 2". They were then left to dry until November when the turning started. These are the straight ones. As you can see the ends need sanding and I need to put some epoxy dough into the stress cracks. I am very surprised that I didn't get chunks flying into my face. These are the tapered rolling pins with the ends sanded and the epoxy paste applied. I rubbed it in as well as I could. This is my first experience with it and you knead this and then rub it hard to go into any openings of the wood. My inexperience show with the white color on the epoxy after 3 coats of mineral oil. The letters of the school, the year and USA is burned into the ends. I used a soldering/woodburning tool from Harbor Freight which I think cost about $20. These are the tapered ones plus the 2 for making pie crusts or pasta. The depth of the pie crusts are 3/16" thick. Again, you can see the epoxy in the cracks. They are out of here. Easy project for beginners. The straight ones are the hardest for me. The tapered, I mark the center, each end, then 3 inches from each end. Then with a set of calipers, I measure about the same diameter for each end at the same distance from the end. Hope this gives motivation to those who wish to start spindle turning. Happy holidays.

His beautiful wood and glass goblets provided the extra materials to create these gorgeous candle holders- He explains more in his post- Woodbutcher also gave us a heads up on a nice 2 part video by Mike Peace on making a turned jewelry box- @FlGatorwood used some "fog" wood to turn some beautiful rolling pins- He created a really nice pictorial of the process used in making these- @John Morris posted a picture of a "traveling lathe". Pretty Cool!! What’s Coming Up- Click on the above image for the link to more information and registration. For The Newbies- The Woodworker's Journal posted a nice article on a beginners guide for lathe tools and sharpening. Although primarily for traditional turning tools, they do mention carbide insert tools. https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/beginners-shopping-list-for-turning-tools-and-sharpening-gear/ Mike Waldt has a nice video that shows us we may not need as many of those turning gouges as we might think- Expand Your Horizons- Sorry, couldn't come up with anything really exciting here this week. New Turning Items- The folks at Woodturners Wonders have a couple of interesting things. First, if you belong to a club, you can gat a nice discount for ordering from them. They also have a nice sanding package for the next couple of days- You can find there website at- https://woodturnerswonders.com/ Everything Else- I wanted to try out the texturing tool that Mike Peace developed. Some of the parts were in my junk box so it wasn't going to be an expensive lesson if I failed. I found the bronze bushings at the Fastenal dealer and that's the only thing I had to purchase. These bushings had a different O.D. than the ones Mike referenced so I made up the difference with a wooden insert. Then pressed the bushing assembly, along with a small magnet, into the brass plumbing nipple. Used JB Weld to secure the bushing assembly. To reinforce the brass tube, I turned a maple dowel to fill the void behind the bushing assembly and pressed it into place. Next, turned a handle from a scrap piece of wood and drilled the end for the brass tube- The pressed the tube into the handle- Cut off the ned of a copper elbow and pinned it with a nail to act as a ferrule. Tried it on the hollow vessel I've been playing with- Before- After- Safe turning

Wishing everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving, tomorrow. Please don't forget that we are in the midst of our Adopt a Wounded Warrior Family project. We still need about $500 to meet our goal. While we are giving thanks for what we have, let us not forget about those who sacrificed so much to provide us with that opportunity. Our Patriot Turners- We have had an outstand running thread this past week from @MountainGaurdian. He is setting up his lathe and turning some really neat projects! There have tons of comments, questions and answers. Naturally, this item caught my eye- Please checkout his turnings and jump into the conversation! Ed, also asked us if we had any suggestions on what he could do with these little items- no smart aleck comments please . They are burls from his pine tree. Check his post and maybe you can offer some suggestions. @HandyDan posted a slick tip in our Woodturning Tips section. Pretty cool idea! What’s Coming Up- Last week we posted a turning club from the state of Washington. Heading south to Oregon- Click on the image for the link to this club. Our friends from Spiracraft have a list of all of the woodworking shows they will be attending in 2020. Check out his shop made jig for assuring the faceplate is centered over the turning blank- Expand Your Horizons- Well, it's been a week of sea urchin turnings. Using these shells was quite popular some time back. Looks like was goes around, comes around. First, Cindy Drozda shared her two part video for creating an urchin ornament. Not to be outdone, our ol' buddy Tim Yoder also posted his sea urchin ornament. Check out his use of those fabulous Easy Wood Tools! New Turning Items- Ruth Niles' newsletter came this week and I noticed she has added a couple of new items to her inventory. She now has 2 sizes of espresso coffee tampers - 53mm for home coffee makers and 57mm for commercial machines. https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/coffee-tamper/ She also has a meat tenderizer that can double as a cookie press! https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/meat-tenderizer/ The folks at Woodturners Wonders are running specials thru the month of November. Check out some of their products at- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/specials Everything Else- The new lathe is up and running! I've started making Christmas presents from a walnut log. Not sure how old this piece is but it is bone dry. Turned and sanded the outside of each bowl using the faceplate. Now it's reversing the pieces and hollowing them. One of the pieces will have a maple lid with a knob. That one will go to my shop teacher. Some of the bowls have burned accent stripes and textured designs. For Mr. Ostrasky- I was watching Bradley McAllister on monday and he was complimenting the folks at Easy Wood Tools by quickly dispelling the myth that carbide tools can't produce long wooden shavings. It reminded me of something I read on another turning forum about how you can't get smooth surfaces from carbide cutters. This is the surface of the walnut using the Easy Wood R2 negative rake cutter ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools )- No ripples!! Safe turning
