I was using a rat-tail rasp this morning and noted my comment on it that it had been sharpened. Did you know that you can have sharpened files, rasps, and other such tools?. I have used Boggs Tool https://boggstool.com/. They cost just a few dollars each. Since you have to pay shipping, it pays to send a few at once, or get together with a buddy. If the tool is beyond sharpening, they will discard or return at your request. They told me they'd make my Nicholson patternmaker's rasp sharper than new.

I get Tom Fidgen's Newsletter in my inbox and I always look forward to it. Tom is a hand made by hand tool guy, long story short, great stuff, beautiful work, I have been following him for along time. In the most recent newsletter he is advertising his new Two Handled Rasps, these are beautiful tools, I want them, I gotta have them, don't know how yet, but some day I'll have them in my shop. These tools just make sense, with their two handles, stitched rasp, these are made for accurate stock removal. I have no horse in the game here, I just love beautiful tools is all. Here they are. Just thought I'd share them.

Got a new tool. A cabinet rasp, brand name Auriou. Ten inches long, with #9 grain, which is their way of grading the grit. I ordered it from Highland Woodworking back in Jan right after the new year, and it just came yesterday. i got intrigued by the video of how they are hand made, or hand stitched, in France. At $134.00, I hope I get enough use out of it to justify the price.

An older article but apparently still relevant when it comes to the Nicholson Pattern Makers Rasp's. I found this blog story at one of my favorite hand tool suppliers, I have purchased quiet a few tools from Tools For Working Wood, the last tool I purchased last year was an English Mortise chisel made by Ray Isles. Tools For Working Wood is a great resource in their blogs, and their tools for purchase, just thought I'd share the blog on their decision to not sale Nicholson Rasps any longer and why. Until something comes along to build with....wood-wise. Stopped at a pair of stores the other day....one had a Nicholson USA Rasp.. Yep....for $2? Seemed better than that $200 Stanley No. 72 in another stall..... Nice logo.....Wandered over to the other store....found a large coffee can full of drill bits... These seemed to be sizes I didn't have.....well, one was. One is a #4 ( 4/16") the one i didn't have was that #5 ( 5/16") dollar bill for the pair... Went to leave the stall, had to turn around...found a shelf....found this thing sitting on it... No, not a space gun....a saw set. Millers Falls No. 214, type 1 Needed a bit of clean up, price tag said $8.....plus tax. As for something to build with? Took care of that "problem" this afternoon... We'll see how far 32 bf of flat sawn Ash will go.....$30. There is 11 boards there, all 4/4 x 6"....we had to cut 5 boards down, as 11' was too long for the van...the 11th was already @ 6' Will post something in the woodworking section, when I can get something started...I barely tapped the stash of the Ash the fellow has, might try to go back and get another layer......need to save up me pennies

Rust Hunting today, so not too much was done on the Pine Table. All the legs have eight "flats" four at the top, and four near the feet, mostly rough sawn, too. Clamped each leg up, and smoothed each flat, using the Little Guys The low angle one mostly. The square areas on each leg, like where an apron will go, were smoothed out. Do one side, release the vise, rotate, and repeat. The Knuckle cap was used a few times, as well. Nice change of pace from them big old Jack planes. A Wards #78 had snuck out of the Tool Chest, too. The one in back of the crowd. That orange thing is the Handyman after a clean up. But why the 78? Well I clamp an apron blank to the bench top. Set the fence and depth stop on the 78 and run it back and forth a few times. Then use the VIXEN rasp to clean up a finished tenon. Takes longer to clamp it up, than the make one. Might get the long aprons done tomorrow? We'll see...
