When my daughter Grace was younger my Aunt gave her this puzzle with her name on it. I decided I should put in a frame to preserve it for her. I made a box for the cardboard box the puzzle came as well. I’ll probably hold on to it until she has her first child. Hopefully that’ll be awhile. Don’t think she’ll be much on it now since she’s just turning 16.

So I get a piece of Formica close to the right background color and saw another piece like the missing one! Formica is close to the same thickness and we will leave that piece un painted but with a note saying this piece will be the last piece of this puzzle no matter where you start or finish putting the pieces together!!!! Or real close to that last piece?? We only do 1000 pieces or more so this will be a while before anyone knows where it goes. Strange, but a person knows when their eyesight starts going south!!!The back wall of the garage is usually where he leaves a tell tale sign.

His mother wants him to be a few states smarter than his class mates when he starts to school......and this is a mighty good way to learn the states. The small puzzle was about all the 20" Dewalt could handle. Then I moved up in size and talked the Dewalt in to giving this larger puzzle a try...and he did it great.. The small one is what I been making over the years but got to thanking the larger one has bigger pieces and might not get lost as easy... I did leave out a couple but they were the least important. But after he learns the first 48 then I'll present him with the others...Can't remember their names anyway!!!

For our Christmas dinner party I try to make something for the kids to amuse themselves with. Usually everyone, young and old join in. This year I decided to make a block puzzle. It goes by the name "The Red Stone" or "Melting Block". I inquired about it back in January and received the help I needed to get the dimensions. Didn't look too hard and isn't. My big mistake was deciding to make 30 of them. There are nine blocks including the red one and five pieces to the box since I opted to not use a lid. That's 420 pieces to cut. Well it is done and I sure am happy about that. I didn't put any finish on them except for the red block. Just didn't have it in me to go that far. A lot of times I end up giving them all away but if I end up with one I think I will put finish on it and keep it around. Here they are in each stage. It amazed me how even they are in height inside the box. There are no air gaps in either stage.

Too bad I didn't have something like this when I was in grade school... I found a picture of the original 48 US states and posted it then enlarged it with Rapid Resizer to about 20 inches wide. Then printed a pattern and using two 1/4" Baltic Birch pieces of plywood I used one as a backer board and the other I cut out the states. I then glued the outline of the states on to the backer board and since I had lots of states to color I decided to use kids water colors...This one I made in 2000 . I think the next ones I make will have the names of the states on the back side along with the capitals of each state also..I doubt if anyone out there can name all of these 48 states in about 10 minutes and for sure would never be able to name the capitals of each state in a life time...

This is a piece for the project that lead to me first considering if I could build something like this to begin with. A rough guess would put this at probably 3 or 4 years from idea to this point. The rings will be for a project I've wanted to do for a long time but just didn't like any of the available options for the lettering. My hand wood burning skills are not up to the task for sure. Anyway, my plan is to make several of the project for Grand kid Christmas presents this year, each one will take six identical rings. That means I'll need close to 50 of these rings made. The one in the machine is a test/setup piece. The little laser is doing exactly what I envisioned. You may notice the "A" looks blurry, that's because I re targeted the laser to center the script. Now, I have a benchmark and subsequent rings will be right. The rings are about 2 1/2" in diameter and the burn area is 1/2" wide. Has everyone figured out what is the project? Steve

Does anyone have the block dimensions for this puzzle? I saw them listed in Lumber Jocks Site but couldn't open them. It is also called The Red Stone puzzle. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/11962 The link won't work unless you copy and paste.
