  1. Hi everyone Finished my newest custom intarsia project titled "Woodworker Needs a Shop". This is the second of 3 pieces I am creating as part of the Aavegotchi Intarsia Collection. 501 pieces from 40 different woods. Book matched Zebrawood frame with purpleheart inlay banding measures 21" wide x 16" tall. No stains, paints or dyes were used in this project. Lots of little pieces , detail carving and texturing bring this project to life. Fun Stuff!!
  2. I posted photos of this build in July last year but for the full build video I'll just post it here rather than revive an older thread. It's a beautiful piece with the Curly Maple and Purpleheart; the video is 23 minutes long and has chapters if you want to go to certain sections. Enjoy!
  3. Finally got Mrs. Boss's lidded bowl completed. Took lots of time, interruptions along the way, but worthwhile project all said and done. Cocobolo, purpleheart and mahogany. Patterned after the Queen in a chess set for the Queen. ...I know way too mushy. You may notice some discoloration around the finial on the lid. It will turn purple in a day or two after the fresh cuts heal. Powersand to 320 and finished with Acks. .40
  4. Starting a new project for a serious audiophile with some serious equipment. His McIntosh amp alone weighs 125 lbs.! The dimensions alone make this rack impressive; everything is 8/4 and the shelves are 23" deep, 52" wide, and the unit is 31" high. Each shelf will weigh about 70 lbs. The top shelf is Curly Maple and the middle and bottom shelves are Northern Hard Rock Maple. These will be banded with Curly Maple so from the front you'll see Curly Maple shelves. But since the middle and bottom shelves will be covered with gear there was no need for these to be the much more expensive Curly Maple. The legs are about 2" x 3" and are Purpleheart. I'll finish the piece in Nitrocellulose lacquer. While there's no rush on completing this piece I do want to stay on it as much as possible but as other orders come in I'll put this aside. For instance, we got two separate orders for 18" Longworth chucks today so I'll move all of this out and cut the chucks tomorrow, then move all of this back in to begin planing and jointing shelves. When the shelves are glued I'll take them to my friend's cabinet shop and run them through their wide belt sander. Our SuperMax 19-38 will work but it will be so much easier to do it on their wide belt sander. As you can see, just the lumber alone overwhelms our little shop and when it comes to assembling this I'll have to do it in the house because I don't have room in the shop to put it together. Preliminary design - One shelf, basically, prior to jointing - All the lumber for the project - Curly Maple close up shots - More photos and updates as I work through this project. Enjoy! David
  5. So I wound up making another bowl I wanted to try out the Food Grade Mineral Oil finish on this one and I actually like it quite well it worked good fortunately its quite cheap to pick up. Not the best looking bowl but I'm happy with it. The EWT hollower worked quite well only had a couple of catches with it because I don't have a negative rake cutter for it as of yet but still either way worked well. I've still even got a wobble not sure how to fix it exactly.
  6. So going back to the hollowing troubles I had I put that on the back burner for now. My purple heart and padauk blanks arrived this morning. I decided to run with the purple heart not having the right sort of mask I don't think at least for the Padauk. I've been running the blanks that I get right off the bat, so far I have NOT had any issues with working on them with the wax sealer on. In fact it actually makes it easier getting the sealer off just carving into it. So I think I've been prety lucky on that part of it. How ever I was expecting the purple heart to be a bit moist with the sealer on it... how ever I was dead wrong on that assumption it is dry as a bone. Not sure if I bit off more than I could chew being a noob turner. Yep using EWT rougher on this one and its working beautifully. I've got a rough idea in mind for this one since I want to do an actual BOWL instead of a cup like bowl. This is the 6x6x3 I ordered so I think that should give me plenty to round it down and put a tenon rather than mortise onto it. For some reason I've always been quite fond of purpleheart. But not sure if I should even be trying to attempt this but I'm crazy enough to. (I do apologize for the double thread today.)
  7. Made this for my wife's business cards. Stacked the purpleheart on the background to create an inlay. Cut the outer leaves and branch at a 3 degree draft and that allowed it to fit snug into the background.
  8. Hope everyone survived July 4th and @Gerald glad you weren't hurt in the explosion!! Our Patriot Turners- We've had some Christmas ornaments posted this past week! First up was @Ron Altier with another one of his SpectraPly beauties. Ron discusses this piece in his posting- Then just today, @HandyDan showed us some more of his inside-out ornaments with some surprises inside! Check out Dan's post to see how he got those glass centers in there! @Pauley was busy in his shop. Just look at this gorgeous bowl he turned and carved! Pauley tells us how he did this and received heaps of compliments about his piece. Check his post at- About a year ago, we posted a "Tip" in the woodturning forum about sanding on the lathe. That tip generated some discussion and comments this past week. If you missed it, here's the entire thread/discussion- What’s Coming Up- Click on the above image for the link to more information. For The Newbies- Want to try a nice useful project? This one is perfect for some skew practice! Turn a "garden dibble"! This project is from the latest edition of Woodturning OnLine and is by Tom Hintz. The tutorial can be found at- http://www.newwoodworker.com/turning/trndbl.html. The entire newsletter can be read at- https://www.woodturningonline.com/index.php?edition=072019. Check out the article on "Making Money Off Your Craft". Expand Your Horizons- I happened across this video showing a really neat technique for restoring the deep purple color to Purpleheart. I'm not sure if it works on other woods. New Turning Items- Mike Peace reviews a sphere cutting jig in this video- Everything Else- Rick Turns has posted his list of YouTube woodturning videos for the month of June. If you find this list helpful, please leave a comment on Rick's YouTube page I'm sure he will appreciate it. Last week, I posted a laser wall thickness device I was tinkering with. @Gerald asked if I could show it in action. I don't have a video camera (or a tripod to hold my phone) but I did take some stills of using it to hollow a little walnut vessel. I used my Easy Wood Tools mini hollowers. Really glad I bought these ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools )! Started with a 1/2" hole- With only 2 hands it was kind of difficult to get real action shots. This is what it looked like when inserted into the vessel (needed a clamp to hold it steady) I was pressing the on/off switch manually for this. The tip of the "probe" is articulated so that it can be positioned around a corner. Seems to work pretty good. The overall dimensions were designed around the sizes of EWT mini hollowers. Still needs some refining but overall all, I think it will do what I need. Also turned a finial but it definitely is too clunky. Safe turning
