Our Patriot turners have been busy in their shops this week with a wide range of project! Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker accepted his club president's challenge for making gnomes or "gonks". Steve received lots of comments and questions. Please check out his post for more images and ideas- Steve also showed us a new toy he bought. I have to say, I'm kinda partial to this one myself Sooner or later it happens to all of us. @Gerald was turning a bowl and disaster struck. But undaunted, Gerald pressed on and salvaged what otherwise would have been firewood. Check out what he did and the end results at- New member @Reese Aukee posted some of her awesome turnings. Reese is new to turning but it looks like she is a natural and a real eye for creativity!! She shared more of her work here- @Ron Altier is finally getting back into the shop after a brief hiatus as caregiver. As for most of us, woodturning is our relaxation and meditation- All did not goes as planned for Ron. As often happens, "the best laid plans of mice and men..." However, thin walled bowls are rather fragile and may not be suitable for utilitarian use. Here, Kent from Turn A Wood Bowl, demonstrates how to have to the best of both worlds. Beautiful day today, 67° and sunny. Tomorrow, winter weather advisory. Ahh, spring time in PA. Our Patriot Turners- @BillyJack asked our members for input on some turning tools. Several gave their recommendations on what he might consider. I hope he posts the tools he gets so we can all drool over his choices! @Gerald gave us a look at some of the turnings that were done at the last club meeting. Gerald posted several more images of turnings that were done during the demonstration. Gerald said their guest demonstrator was Matt Monaco. My apologies to @Smallpatch for giving credit to another member on making the chess piece. I have totally lost my mind. Finally got that computer change-over done (I think), we'll see whether the phone rings tonight. Note to self: clean out your own contact's list. No one need 2894 contacts to try to inform of a new email address. Our Patriot Turners- @Smallpatch was asked to recreate a chess piece. Can’t wait to see the results! Jess has a funny story to go along with the request. Be sure to check out his post- @HandyDanTurned a set of incredible earrings. Dan is our resident "inside-out" turning expert and these beauties accent his talents! Dan received lots of comments and he also describes his process in this post- It is encouraging to see our turner's progress as they post their projects. I love the way he has chosen to display his turnings. So much better than setting on a shelf. This was a live presentation and a little lengthy but has great information- New Turning Items- If you turn segments pieces, you are probably aware of the wedgie sleds for the table saw. This video shows a similar device for the bandsaw. Not exactly new, the Tormek wet grinder has been around for a long time. Anyway I've been practicing and recording results so I can reproduce the embellishments on other pieces. I probably should have picked a softer wood than white oak. Sometime back I made a tool described by Mike Peace for small pieces (the one with the brass shank). I use it on bowl bottoms for a spiral pattern. Safe turning and stay well

I'm starting a new bowl, the largest I've ever tried (of the 4 I've tried in the past). This one is walnut, about 10"- across and a little over 5" tall (rough cut). BTW, in cutting that piece of firewood round yesterday, I made the famous mistake of getting it jammed in my bandsaw, but that's a question for another post. Anway, I was trying to make the blank round this morning, and I wasn't sure how to present the gouge to the wood. I wound up doing it (mostly) with the flute straight up. and sometimes I laid the gouge on it's side cutting with the upper edge. I got it mostly round now, but what would have been the correct way to present the gouge. BTW, I watched a couple of U tube videos yesterday and in both cases they talked very little about tool presentation....it was more about getting the bowl cut as quickly as possible. One was Richard Raffen, I probably won't watch any more of his stuff. Forgot to mention, this blank is full of cracks....so it may just turn out to be a disaster.

A record of some observations after having an opportunity to use both tools. Tormek Round grinding wheel leaves a radius or hollow grind This is desirable for some applications like a parting tool. Does a great job on gouges Hollow grind is less than ideal for bench chisels and plane blades Time Takes longer to sharpen Preparation Since the diameter of the wheel changes with use, set up is inconsistent from session to session. Jigs and notation labels on the tool help to mitigate this, but still requires fiddling each time you return. Steel stays cool Re-grinding bevel takes an excessive amount of time. Tool not really designed for this work Cost Very expensive, in excess of $1000 Long term More expensive to operate over time due to high cost of abrasives An assortment of grits requires significant investment in stones. So this month I did purchase the PSI Woodworking Buffing System. I set it up for testing today after I got my antique pepper mill body finished up to test it out. Now having a variable speed controlled buffing attachment for the lathe is quite nice. It works well using it. It did an okay buffing job. Aside from the base polishing that I gave it while it was still on the lathe. Works well for 60 bucks roughly its not bad. So in looking through this box of stuff I got last year I found a #2 morse taper with a threaded spur bit. The threaded spur is about 3/8 long. Having never used one I am curious is this sufficient to turn smaller stuff with or am I going to need to reserve my room at the ER? If it is good to use any tips, or warnings I should know about?

Maybe it is time to make your own. A lot cheaper than buying one and grinder and drill is all you need. Shop Built Texturing/Spiraling Tool
