Missed last weeks post so this one will be have a little extra. Our Patriot Turners- @nevinc posted a couple of projects he has been working on. First, a neat little table item that would be useful in any kitchen- Nevin combined woodworking and turning to complete the project- He also posted a question and his method of storing sawdust from various species of wood he uses as fillers. He was wondering what storage method the rest of us use for storage. Check out his post and let him know your method- And, Nevin showed us some beautiful walnut bowls he had finished- He received lots of positive comments in his post- @Steve Krumanaker has been busy fulfilling orders to some of the artisans in his area. He has been working with one who sells "Bee Products" for whom he make honey dipper lids. Steve posted a couple of short videos on how he has upgraded his manufacturing process. Steve is also making drop spindles for another craftsperson. These are used in the process of turning wool into yarn. He developed a neat jig to create shop made dowels for part of the pieces. In this post, he explains why he made the parts instead of buying them- @Gerald added a project to our "Off The Lathe And Finished" thread. These beautiful ornaments got lots of great comments and a couple of questions as well. A small pebble can create a world of ripples. Members of our woodworking club have attended county fairs, woodworking shows, and symposiums which always included live demonstrations. Why? Most people can’t visualize what we do. I’ve seen people become fascinated with turning after they made a simple maple or oak pen at one of these events. I’ve seen their entire family get interested and turning became their family hobby. They’ve planned family trips around turning shows and symposiums along with week-long hands-on learning at folk schools. I’ve witnessed folks buying their first mini lathe and accessories then go on to develop a lifelong passion for the smell of freshly milled lumber and the shavings from another bowl blank. The benefit to you of doing something like that is they bring their non-turning skill sets from their regular jobs, i.e. management, leadership, and organizational skills. Many have become club officers including President. One such fellow served three terms and on a personal note, became my dentist until he retired. We’ve seen lawyers, engineers, business executives, moms, teenagers, pastors, and doctors get the turning bug all because they saw a turning demonstration at a craft fair or other public event. I’ve told the story many times of how I attended a two-hour club demonstration in a cold dark basement one Saturday between Christmas and the New Year. Nick Cook made a top, a garden dibble, a honey dipper, a toothpick holder, and a mahogany plate plus some other things I don’t remember. One couple thought that was terrific and booked a day's instruction with Nick. Then they started a turning club, then I attended, then I got hooked. Now I make a great living inventing and offering turning accessories to the turning community worldwide. During the thirteen years I was on the Woodworking Show Circuit, I was able to demonstrate turning in front of over a million people. That’s a pretty good ripple! Thank you, Nick Cook. In order to cause the ripple, you have to toss the stone in the first place. I would encourage you to invite someone to a club meeting or over to your shop for an hour or two for coffee and to make some shavings. You never know how big that ripple might become Safe turning

Lady at the honey farm just ordered 25 dipper lids, said the last two festivals have wiped her out on them. I've posted pictures of the finished dippers many times but I thought I would do a quick video or two making the lids. I did do video on you tube on making one of these but amazingly that video is 7 years old and my process has changed dramatically. The lids are twice turned so I did a video for each step. Posted these on my facebook page a couple days ago but almost didn't post them here as every one has seen them in one form or another before. Decorative mason jar lids for a local bee farm gift shop. 25 honey dipper lids and 25 herb jar lids and she ordered 25 more of a different size when I delivered these.

Only 6 days until Valentines day! Maybe your significant other would like a new turning tool Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN turned a couple of small boxes, one of which he entered into his turning club's contest. Both are beauties! Check his post to see which one got entered into the contest! @forty_caliber got a new chuck for his lathe. This baby is a monster, too! He did a super job of sharing his findings and comparing it to one of his other chucks. Please see his post for lots more images and additional findings- Forty also posted his splated pecan bowl. Our Patriot turners have been busy in their shops this week with a wide range of project! Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker accepted his club president's challenge for making gnomes or "gonks". Steve received lots of comments and questions. Please check out his post for more images and ideas- Steve also showed us a new toy he bought. I have to say, I'm kinda partial to this one myself Sooner or later it happens to all of us. @Gerald was turning a bowl and disaster struck. But undaunted, Gerald pressed on and salvaged what otherwise would have been firewood. Check out what he did and the end results at- New member @Reese Aukee posted some of her awesome turnings. Reese is new to turning but it looks like she is a natural and a real eye for creativity!! She shared more of her work here- @Ron Altier is finally getting back into the shop after a brief hiatus as caregiver. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning. Not sure if that's good or bad news. Seems like winter has been wasted around here. When it's cold there's no precipitation. It warms up and then we get rain. Our Patriot Turners- Our resident ornament master is at it again. @Ron Altier posted some things he created from just scrap pieces. Ron sure has an eye for design- Check out his post for additional details and some of the comments left by our members- @Steve Krumanaker picked up some elm from his son. Steve turned some lovely bowls. As always, he adds his personal touch to the bottoms- Steve showed us more images in his post- Steve also found a way to keep busy when it was too cold to work outside In his post, Steve explains how he attaches the removable roof @Bundoman Has been teaching his daughter about turning. Been a busy week here at the Patriot with lots going on with our turners! Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber showed us an oak crotch bowl he is turning. Really looks fantastic- He received lots of positive comments on this one. Here's his post- "Forty" also posted a picture of a rough turned pecan bowl. Some beautiful grain in this one! He tells us a little about it and posted a few more pictures here- @Steve Krumanaker has been busy with several turnings. The first one is a sweet looking bowl that he said ran him through the funnies! Steve explains what happen- Regardless, he received lots of positive comments. Bowls weren't the only type of turnings Steve did this week. He made another vase from the Flame Box Elder log. I love the finish he obtained on this one! Check out the comments from our gang- @AndrewB is setting up to do some resin casting. You may remember, he purchased a pressure pot sometime back. In this post, Andrew tells us about the resin he purchase. He received several comments and questions. I'll be following along on this one!! The video's author uses a dehydrator to speed up the process. This is "Forty's" post. If you view the video on YouTube, the author has a second video with additional tests. @Gerald has posted several bowls he has turned for the Beads Of Courage group. This video is from Kent (Turn A Wooden Bowl) and demonstrates the turning process as well as providing links for getting involved- While I was at this bowl turning site, I noticed another video on end grain bowls. You can create some really impressive turning when the bowl is oriented in this position. We posted a multi-axis turning from Alan Stratton. He has updated that video with some shop made jigs. Both bowls have rounded lips. The bases of the bowls have a rounded foot that mimics the lip. Both finished with gloss poly and of course both were turned completely with Easy Wood Tools. The gift shop that displays a few of my turnings sold fifteen ornaments for me this year and several honey dipper lids. I don't want my hobby to be a job but a little extra cash lets me spend for the shop without feeling guilty about it. More about that in a minute. I'm working through a batch of honey dipper lids for the spring season now. There will be 25 this time. All of the lids are completed and I have 23 dipper stems done so I only really need to do a couple more tomorrow. However, I have nine more blanks prepped so I'll turn them all and put some in the kitty for next time. Tomorrow I'll also get the laser fired up and etch some of the lids, about half of them probably. Now, about spending some of my stash. I've been intrigued by CNC for a few years, even more so since I got the little laser. I have some ideas about doing some inlay plaques for ornaments and I'm hoping to do it with a little cnc machine. Found this on Amazon. Very affordable at under 250 bucks. It is very small and I'm sure very light duty. It's supposed to have a working area of about 11"X 7". I figure if nothing else it's an inexpensive way to learn about the process and whether or not my ideas will work. Surprisingly, these machines get mostly favorable reviews. We'll see how it goes. I will finish the honey dippers before I mess with it to much but I'm anxious to explore the possibilities.

Well so far the big snow storm has been more hype than happen. About 6" on the ground and very little happening now. The weather folks are still predicting it to pick up over night. I guess we'll see. Nine days until Christmas!! Although we exceeded our goal for our Gold Star family, you can still donate and get in on the raffle. Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier posed a couple of questions to our forum, this past week. His first question dealt with a turning technique. Our members provided their thoughts, what are yours- Ron showed us some ornament turnings and asked how they were done. Several members provided sources for tools and information as to techniques. Maybe you can add your knowledge- Ron also posted a picture of what's left of his exotic wood collection. Knowing Ron, he'll be able to get a couple more ornaments out of this collection- @Steve Krumanaker May have taken a hiatus from our forum a little while back but it certainly didn't affect his turning skills. Steve posted several projects this past week. First up was more of his birdhouse ornaments. His post contained many more examples- Steve was lucky enough to get a maple log from his tree guy. What a surprise it held when he turned it into a bowl- Please see his post for additional images of this awesome piece- But Steve still wasn't done making us jealous! He turned another batch of honey dipper for a customer who sells Bee products- Steve uses a laser to decorate his lids and answered questions about the finish. @Gerald and @Steve Krumanaker both do a lot of Pyrography. Gerald got a new pyrography station and posted it for us to drool over- @FlGatorwood used some really old pine to turn some beautiful pens. We don't normally think of pine for this but the old growth pine has gorgeous color and grain patterns- You may remember that Paul ( @Masonsailor) got a new lathe. He had the opportunity to get it dirty this past week- Paul can sure make some pretty turnings! @AndrewB Scored some birch and cherry logs from his neighbor- He has already started turning them into bowls! Abbreviated edition tonight. Life here has taken an entirely new direction. Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN showed us the beginnings of a vase he is going to turn. This will be from a glued up blank. Been working through a run of mason jar honey dippers. Local bee farm wants fifty of them by July. This batch makes forty finished and ready. Have about 20 more to glue up and finish. That will give me a few extra. Steve
