Had this vase in shop for a while. Made from root of black walnut off city property. Had a rock on bottom when turning and messed up a hollowing bit. During drying process it cracked top to bottom. Today hot started opening it up to be laced. hot the eyes drilled and chamfered. Then time to take the tenon off. Worked somewhat but not complete using a cone shaped jamb chuck. started coloring the inside with black Gesso on lower inside and red acrylic on upper inside. More tomorrow I hope.

Just turned this beads bowl this afternoon from magnolia. It turned well . This is an endgrain hollowing and I forgot to put CA on the pith so got a little crack I found when I took it off chuck. The tools in the picture are what I used plus a 5/8 bowl gouge.

Have had these hollowed all summer and after I finished all the other gifts last week got these out to sand and finish. They are sweet gum and the sanding went rather rapidly. The dye is applied by wiping from center to edge and since there will be no crisp edge it can run over but you do want to leave a jagged edge and not try to make it even. Then repeat from the bottom. The collar is brown ebony and the finial Gabon ebony. Smaller one is about 8.5 in diameter and the larger right at 11.

Finally got around to making some photos of my new turnings. This one is Bradford Pear dyed with Chestnut Stains. Finish is lacquer. I tried something different on the dye because I got the idea when applying the stain . I applied a full width application all the way down the piece and then started only going part way down the side to get the effect you see in the picture looking like a run down the sides. That gave me the idea to do the whole thing that way so I had to sand off the first full pass. The wood was almost burned because that void at the top was rotten into the center.

My neighbor had some limbs cut and I picked up some of the pieces thinking firewood, but decided to turn some. Started doing hollowforms and then went on to try dye. It does not show well in the pic but there is violet sanded off and then yellow and then red. Used Chestnut spirit Stains and finished with lacquer. I turned this piece all the way to finish in one sitting and got no movement out of round and this is one of the smallest entry holes I have done so far.
