  1. For Christmas I made birdhouses to stand among the mushrooms. I used the larger Linden/Basswood branches from my tree out back. They stood about eight inches tall. After Christmas I played with some short pieces and made Gnome home doors for them. Didn't drill for the birds in these. I put a door in the one I kept for myself too. I made the doors and frames as an assembly and let them into the turnings. I found I would never make it as a carver. Can't explain how the bark sticks to them but never lost a single section of it during the turning and carving.
  2. December 7th, never forget the sacrifices- We have made it past the half way point in donations for our Ward 57 Christmas project. If you haven't gotten around to donating, please don't wait! We are purchasing gifts for the family and need the funds to fulfill their requests. Jump over here and make that donation! Our Patriot Turners- We've had lots going on this past week. Some turnings, some questions and even an Internet appearance by one of out own! @forty_caliber posted a bowl he made from the log he questioned the origin, last week. Everyone seemed to come to a consensus about the species See what everyone said about this turning and check the additional images- @RustyFN showed us a gorgeous, turned, flat sided vessel. He told us he had wanted to make one for quite some time. Everyone had lots of positive comments. More images and the dimensions are in Rusty's post- @StaticLV2 added to a previous thread on turning center finders. His is a quick shop made device- An explanation and more action shots are here- Static also posed a question about duplicating a turning. To freehand multiple copies and have them be identical isn't easy. Here's what he is working on- And these are his thoughts- Yesterday, Cindy Drozda held one of her Zoom show and tell get togethers. Our own @Gerald presented his copper rimmed platter and his "poke-a-dot" platter. Gerald has shared both those turnings with us in the past. Cindy usually posts those Zoom talks on her YouTube channel. Not there yet but keep checking to catch our Star in action!! What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration- @forty_caliber gave us a heads up on this. For The Newbies- @HandyDan posted this to show the versatility of the spindle gouge. This artist proves you don't need a dozen tools to create some beautiful pieces Another entry into the gnome turning. This one is from Craft Supplies USA- Expand Your Horizons- Richard Raffan turns a cross grain green ash spatula pot- New Turning Items- Found another source for those threaded rings. These are brass. The ones from Ruth Niles are bronze and are advertised specifically for urns. https://spiracraft.com/product/threaded-brass-rings-for-vessels/?inf_contact_key=a4e1cb7d17423b01ff886ccc58b30487 These are called "Ron's Pearls". Bits of wisdom put together by Ron Brown and are free to download. Get your copy at- https://www.ronbrownsbest.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=4&product_id=927 Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Safe turning
  3. Jeeze, half way thru June already! Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN showed us a new vase he is turning. I really like the shape on this one. Check out his post for all the positive comments- As so often happens, a new turning requires an additional piece of equipment. Rusty's vase project needed a Steady Rest. The one he built looks awesome- Here's more and some comments- @Masonsailor created a beautiful base for a protective glass globe. The entire project displays a prized possession As always, Paul's post contain informative images about his processes. An update on an older thread about lathe tool sharpening. @Bob Hodge has added CBN wheels to his sharpening arsenal and had some questions about using the Wolverine system with the wheels. Please check out his post and offer any advice you can- What’s Coming Up- This Friday, June 17 2022, there will be a free Vendors Showcase Here's the link provided by Cindy Drozda- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41FJ5JM109M From the Art Of Turning- Link to more information- https://www.artofturning.com/?mc_cid=dee7298ffb&mc_eid=480d9e65bf For The Newbies- Some projects require the use of metal inserts to hold threaded utensils. In this video, Carl Jacobson show a neat way to install the inserts from Ruth Niles- A bowl turning video from Alan Stratton. What I found interesting in this one was the faceplate jig and the safety measures used when reverse chucking with the mortice. Not sure if everyone can view this video from Lyle Jamison, on Facebook. An interesting method of assuring a reverse chuck maintains the original centerline axis. https://fb.watch/dFPTsQz-05/ Expand Your Horizons- Several of our turners have made "gnomes" in the past. Here's another how-to video on making them. Check out the use of our sponsor's tools- @Jim from Easy Wood Tools!! Kent, from Turn A Wood Bowl, has an interesting video and discussion about turning and dust collection. New Turning Items- Some new information on the Kodiak Sharpening system from Woodturners Wonders- A special on Ruth Niles pizza cutters! https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/pizza-night-special-kit-2/ Recently we mentioned that Ron Brown had released a stabilizing device for hollowing bowls. Sam Angelo puts it through its paces Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week-
  4. Okay, last one of these I promise but I had an idea and just had to give it a try. I wanted to make one of these with curly hair. I didn't find exactly what I looking for but I'm pretty happy with what I found. Because of how this one is made I needed to put a bottom in it. One thing leads to another and I wondered about giving it some feet. This is the result. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to what is the hair?
  5. Our Patriot turners have been busy in their shops this week with a wide range of project! Our Patriot Turners- @Steve Krumanaker accepted his club president's challenge for making gnomes or "gonks". Steve received lots of comments and questions. Please check out his post for more images and ideas- Steve also showed us a new toy he bought. I have to say, I'm kinda partial to this one myself Sooner or later it happens to all of us. @Gerald was turning a bowl and disaster struck. But undaunted, Gerald pressed on and salvaged what otherwise would have been firewood. Check out what he did and the end results at- New member @Reese Aukee posted some of her awesome turnings. Reese is new to turning but it looks like she is a natural and a real eye for creativity!! She shared more of her work here- @Ron Altier is finally getting back into the shop after a brief hiatus as caregiver. As for most of us, woodturning is our relaxation and meditation- All did not goes as planned for Ron. As often happens, "the best laid plans of mice and men..." This post by @Headhunter reminded me that we really haven't promoted our "Ringmaster Sub-Forum" very often. Check out this post for some fantastic creations! Here is the link to the Ringmaster sub-forum- https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/forum/98-ringmaster-turning/ What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for the links to registration and more information- From the AAW- From a social media post by Rebecca DeGroot- For The Newbies- From Carl Jacobson, a video covering some tools that make turning easier- Turning a thin walled bowl has a bit of a learning curve but they are beautiful and elegant. However, thin walled bowls are rather fragile and may not be suitable for utilitarian use. Here, Kent from Turn A Wood Bowl, demonstrates how to have to the best of both worlds. Mike Peace shows us we don't need a chainsaw or a chunk of log to make a bowl- Expand Your Horizons- Some turning, some carving and a lot of sanding when Tim Yoder tackles a Manzanita root- This one's for @Ron Altier. Ron turns crochet hooks for his Mrs. This video, from Alan Stratton, shows how to turn quilting tools. New Turning Items- Woodturners wonders have their Lathe Track System on sale. Check it out at- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/lathe-track Mentioned this before. Ruth Niles sold her business to Carl and Robin Jacobson. Ruth is holding a clearance sale to avoid having to ship a lot of stock from Pennsylvania to Oregon. Here are some examples of the savings available- Click on the image for the link to more sale items. The sale ends April 3!!! Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Cherry burl/wood platter from a piece of wood I got at the Nittany Woodturners Club meeting a while back-
  6. I make ornaments and give them to friends and family each year. This year I decided to do Gnomes. I used the Amsterdam red ink for the roofs and faux fur from the craft store for the beards. Made 36 of the little guys. Already gave a few away and put some on my tree.
  7. We've got sycamore trees in our yard, beautiful trees but they drop a lot of limbs. Now and then a limb is big enough to play with. Did some garden whimsy today. First day it's been cool enough to get in the shop for a while. They are a take off on some ornaments I did last year. I knew then I wanted to do some of these for the garden.
  8. Hard to believe that on Friday we will have put 2020 behind us. Let's hope 2021 will see the end of the pandemic! Our Patriot Turners- @PostalTom finished up his Christmas stocking tree. It turned out fantastic and can be seen in his update to a previous post- @RustyFN has a laser and he has combined it with his CNC machine to design some emblems to finish off his turned bowls. Check out his post to read more about what he is doing and the comments from our members. @HandyDan gave us a Christmas eve peek at some of the ornaments and displays he made- He received lots of positive comments in his post and he gave us a source for some of the embellishments. @AndrewB is looking for some ideas on reverse chucking a bowl. Our members came through with flying colors! They offered techniques, sources and photos to help Andrew figure out the best way- What’s Coming Up- Cindy Drozda Has a live online demonstration/class coming up in January- Click on the above image for the link to her site and more information. For The Newbies- It's a little late for this year but a great time to get a jump on next year's ornaments and gifts! Here's Carl Jacobson creating a Christmas Gnome! If that's not your cup of tea, how about Mike Peace turning a nativity scene. A two video set turning all of the pieces- Part 2 is linked from this video. Expand Your Horizons- We all have turned small lidded boxes. Most of them have had slip fit type lids. Here, Sam Angelo demonstrates how to add threads to the box and lid. This is a two part video set. Part 2 is linked from Sam's YouTube channel. Tim Yoder always brings something new to the plate. In this video he demonstrates how to turn a beautiful Christmas ornament using a cardboard mailing tube. Several months ago we were discussing ways to liquid proof turned vessels. The use of epoxy seemed to to be the preferred material but the trouble was in how to apply it evenly. Zac Higgins shows what he did with a rotisserie motor. Zac provides sources for all the items he used. New Turning Items- I copied this from Ruth Niles' latest newsletter- Click on the above image for the link to Ruth's site. Everything Else- Last week's YouTube woodturning videos from Rick Turns- I am always mesmerized by the work of Frank Howarth. His video style, the projects and the detail are top notch. This one is no exception- I finally finished up the lathe dust collection modifications. The PVC elbow sat a little high. The replacement is made of wood and turned pretty thin. Hope it is strong enough- It's hard to get the light just right to see the dust movement but it does work a lot better than the old hose mount. This was softwood and 80 grit but you get the idea- Safe turning and stay well
  9. I may have posted this before Years ago, I made a gnome home with a surprise in it. The kids would come home from school past our house and see this tree. They got the biggest kick out of what they saw and would bring other kids and even their parents over to open that door
