  1. Missed last weeks post so this one will be have a little extra. Our Patriot Turners- @nevinc posted a couple of projects he has been working on. First, a neat little table item that would be useful in any kitchen- Nevin combined woodworking and turning to complete the project- He also posted a question and his method of storing sawdust from various species of wood he uses as fillers. He was wondering what storage method the rest of us use for storage. Check out his post and let him know your method- And, Nevin showed us some beautiful walnut bowls he had finished- He received lots of positive comments in his post- @Steve Krumanaker has been busy fulfilling orders to some of the artisans in his area. He has been working with one who sells "Bee Products" for whom he make honey dipper lids. Steve posted a couple of short videos on how he has upgraded his manufacturing process. Steve is also making drop spindles for another craftsperson. These are used in the process of turning wool into yarn. He developed a neat jig to create shop made dowels for part of the pieces. In this post, he explains why he made the parts instead of buying them- @Gerald added a project to our "Off The Lathe And Finished" thread. These beautiful ornaments got lots of great comments and a couple of questions as well. Head on over to the thread and check out more on these- Gerald was also kind enough to provide links to videos on sharpening. I must apologize for not recording who asked the question on sharpening. Gerald had entered the AAW August Turning Challenge and provided us with the link to the voting and winners- https://www.aawforum.org/community/threads/august-2023-turning-challenge-final-results.21511/ @KevTN Asked for help identifying a specific pattern for the rim of a platter. Our turners had several suggestions. If you can identify this patter, please help out Kevin- @RustyFN has a gorgeous spalted bowl on his lathe! What’s Coming Up- Cindy Drozda is live tomorrow- Thursday, October 12 at 2pm EDT. She will be discussing how do you protect your eyes, ears, and lungs in the workshop. For registration, follow this link- https://streamyard.com/watch/PsF54zh7XSVb For The Newbies- Kent Weakly's video on what tools are not suitable for bowl turning- Carl Jacobson makes an oak lidded box. Notice that Carl uses both traditional and carbide tools to complete the project- A simple bowl turning to use as a succulent planter from Craft Supplies USA From Tim Yoder on choosing your sandpaper Richard Raffan demonstrates how to make your turned bowls look really top notch by refining the bottom. Expand Your Horizons- Several articles from Kent Weakley on bowl finishes. https://turnawoodbowl.com/my-favorite-food-safe-wood-finish-waterproof-almost/?ck_subscriber_id=1577117793 https://turnawoodbowl.com/make-shellac-wood-bowl-finish/?ck_subscriber_id=1577117793 https://turnawoodbowl.com/spray-lacquer-illustrated-guide-equipment-system-set-up-technique/?ck_subscriber_id=1577117793 Jim Rodgers continues his series on hollowing- Alan Stratton posted this video on YouTube. It reminded me of a similar project that @Gerald had shown us sometime back- The Four Ways videos from the first of the month- Mike Peace- Richard Raffan- Sam Angelo- Tomislav Tomasic- New Turning Items- From Niles Bottle Stoppers- https://nilesbottlestoppers.com/product/cocktail-muddler-set/ From Woodturners Wonders- Diamond wheels for both bench grinders and Tormek grinders- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/diamond-wheels?_kx=gV5SF2As_3IwtBi5TrpHVQM0F3UvGVbQKzhWGippDlk%3D.VJvU8R Everything Else- From Ron Brown's Newsletter- When you share the joys of your craft with someone who has never seen shavings fly off a fresh bowl blank or get to watch a spinning top appear in just a few minutes, you might change their world. A small pebble can create a world of ripples. Members of our woodworking club have attended county fairs, woodworking shows, and symposiums which always included live demonstrations. Why? Most people can’t visualize what we do. I’ve seen people become fascinated with turning after they made a simple maple or oak pen at one of these events. I’ve seen their entire family get interested and turning became their family hobby. They’ve planned family trips around turning shows and symposiums along with week-long hands-on learning at folk schools. I’ve witnessed folks buying their first mini lathe and accessories then go on to develop a lifelong passion for the smell of freshly milled lumber and the shavings from another bowl blank. The benefit to you of doing something like that is they bring their non-turning skill sets from their regular jobs, i.e. management, leadership, and organizational skills. Many have become club officers including President. One such fellow served three terms and on a personal note, became my dentist until he retired. We’ve seen lawyers, engineers, business executives, moms, teenagers, pastors, and doctors get the turning bug all because they saw a turning demonstration at a craft fair or other public event. I’ve told the story many times of how I attended a two-hour club demonstration in a cold dark basement one Saturday between Christmas and the New Year. Nick Cook made a top, a garden dibble, a honey dipper, a toothpick holder, and a mahogany plate plus some other things I don’t remember. One couple thought that was terrific and booked a day's instruction with Nick. Then they started a turning club, then I attended, then I got hooked. Now I make a great living inventing and offering turning accessories to the turning community worldwide. During the thirteen years I was on the Woodworking Show Circuit, I was able to demonstrate turning in front of over a million people. That’s a pretty good ripple! Thank you, Nick Cook. In order to cause the ripple, you have to toss the stone in the first place. I would encourage you to invite someone to a club meeting or over to your shop for an hour or two for coffee and to make some shavings. You never know how big that ripple might become Safe turning
  2. Our Ward 57 project was a complete success. Congrats to all of the raffle winners. Sure hope we get to see some pictures of the kids opening their presents! Writing this on Tuesday as Mimi is scheduled to have here right knee replace tomorrow. She had the left one done about a year ago. I'll be on nurse, cook, laundry, dog sitting and general all around house husband for then next couple of weeks. Our Patriot Turners- @jthornton posted a couple of things this past week. First is his segment jig- As often happens, the best laid plans of mice and men... anyway, he discovered the accuracy wasn't spot on. He tells us more in his post- JT went on to show us what he does with the segments he makes. This is an awesome bowl! Check out his post for more images and a little about the build- What’s Coming Up- Registration is at https://streamyard.com/watch/KGRprAZsAGQU More information here- https://woodturner.org/Woodturner/Virtual-Events/Emma_Cook_Resin_Inlay_Platter.aspx For The Newbies- Reverse sanding can be useful but it comes with some possible problems. Mike peace explains in this video- Do you use a scraper when turning? Richard Raffan shows us how to hone it for the best cuts- Expand Your Horizons- I get a lot of turning notification form various social media accounts. One from Sam Angelo popped up covering his home made finish. I was curious about food contact. Sent him a message but haven't heard back. Here's his video- It worried me about the turpentine. Did a little more digging and found something I didn't expect in a post by Kent Weakley. About have way through the article there is information comparing Linseed Oil to Boiled Linseed Oil. I'll let you decide about what/when you use the ingredients- https://turnawoodbowl.com/my-favorite-food-safe-wood-finish-waterproof-almost/ Another social media article popped up about the difficulty between turning large bowls vs. small bowls. Most of the respondents felt small bowls were more difficult. No one told Richard Raffan that! A beautiful maple burl bowl from Tim Yoder- New Turning Items- Couldn't find anything new but I did notice that Niles Bottle Stoppers have added some Yorkshire Grit products. Our generous sponsor Easy Wood Tools ( @Jordan Martindale ) is now the US source for this great sanding finish! Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Got to play at the lathe the other day. Everyone was making those Gnomes/Gonks. I got this idea that they should be more than just a shelf setter. Turned this one from maple and walnut. The "fur" is from Hobby Lobby. I found some of the original Niles Bottle stoppers hidden in a box. Wine bottle stopper Safe turning
  3. Today, I had the greatest pleasure by being able to deliver all of the Ward 57 Christmas gifts to the Forney family. We met with Travis, Michelle and their two youngest sons- Houston and Levi. Great folks! Even though the kids' gifts have been purchased, there is still time to get in on the awesome prizes in our raffle. Your donations will be forwarded to Mr. and Mrs. Forney to help out with raising their 5 young boys. So, be generous, I know they will appreciate it beyond words. Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber posted a video from Robo Hippy describing a uniquely shaped gouge. Forty also purchased that tool and showed us a little on how well it worked- Forty also posted some images of his new sander/grinder setup. I really like that flexible shaft idea! @Bob Hodge posed a query about what type of spindle gouge would be good for turning finials. Several of our turners had suggestions and also shared some of their turnings from their favorite type of gouges @RustyFNTurned a couple of beautiful bowls- one from pecan and one from walnut What’s Coming Up- https://meetthewoodturner.com/ For The Newbies- It's getting closer to Christmas and if you are short a couple of gifts, Carl Jacobson has an idea for a cute little bottle stopper- Another gift idea comes from Mike Peace. This is a two part video and part 2 is linked from Mikes channel- Kent Weakley offers some tips on how to reduce the stress and strain on your body during turning- Expand Your Horizons- Alan Stratton uses mixed media to produce really fantastic Christmas ornaments. Last week, we posted a link to threaded inserts for screw-on lids. In this 2 part video Mike peace demonstrates how to cut your own threads directly into the wooden turning. Part 2 is linked from Mike's channel- Richard Raffan has a short video discussing various finishes for turnings. These aren't your ordinary clear coat finishes- New Turning Items- These LED lights are similar to the ones sold by Cindy Drozda. Pretty good price. Available from Woodturners Wonders- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/lamps/products/eclipse-led-lathe-lamp On a personal note: if you have a soldering pencil, an old 5 volt USB charging brick and cable and a rare earth magnet- you can get these and build your own. Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Found this on social media and thought it described how many woodturners/woodworkers felt about their work Safe turning
  4. Gene Howe

    Why???

Would someone please explain the reason(s) for applying shellac then a coat of polyurethane.
  5. I turned a new bowl today. Going to try a new finish method a friend was telling me about. He puts walnut oil on walnut, let’s it dry and then puts a poly over that. He said it is a big difference from the one without walnut oil. This is my walnut bowl I turned today. It has danish oil on it. I will let it dry and put on the poly.
  6. June 1 and it's 95° in the shade on the back deck! Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN let us in on a new finish he is trying- Several members expressed interest in more information. @Gerald added a post in the "Finishing Forum" that expanded on some of the ideas from what Rusty posted- What’s Coming Up- Pretty much caught up on all that is happening. This is the first time since Covid started that the AAW is having an in person symposium. https://www.woodturner.org/Woodturner/2022Chattanooga/2022-AAW-Symposium---Chattanooga--Tennessee.aspx?_zs=ceDib&_zl=uos73 For The Newbies- @Gerald added an interesting comment to last week's "Wednesday's..." concerning the types of screws used for fastening faceplates and faceplate rings to a turning. My favorite mounting procedure is similar but using the transparent device. Also, for marking the holes, I found that a #3 Vix-Bit drill center fits perfectly in the mounting holes of all of the Easy Wood Tools faceplates and rings. Mostly I use a oval head screw, as they have a little more "meat" around the drive slots. For smaller turnings, I may use a flathead screw Mike Peace has a nice video on bowl gouge sharpening- I've seen some nice instructional videos from Jim Echter. Unfortunately, these short videos aren't on YouTube. If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, you can watch them there. Here's the Instagram link- https://www.instagram.com/jim_echter/channel/?hl=en and a link to his website- https://tcturning.com/ Expand Your Horizons- Tim Yoder posted a video on making a turned bird feeder. In the video, he demonstrates his ELBO 2 hollowing ring. One more from Alan Stratton on goblets. Several interesting jigs for us "jig junkies"- New Turning Items- Couldn't find anything interesting this week. Hopefully, there will be some new products shown at the AAW Symposium in a couple of weeks! Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- I've been using up some scrap white oak cutoffs to make some simple platters. All of my large shop make holders were designed around my old 14" Delta lathe. The new Jet is 16" and now I need some way to hold the pieces for reverse chucking. I could go the vacuum chuck route, but I'm "frugal to a fault". I love my Easy Wood Tools Cole jaws. Seemed a fairly simple task to make a set of extensions. Not quite perfect, but they work! The holders are from the smaller jigs I had. If I weren't so stubborn, this platter should have gone into the trash. The defect wasn't nearly as noticeable until most of the material was removed. as I tried to get into more solid wood, the bottom got really thin and weak- especially where the oak was soft. Added CA and some Alumilite resin to reinforce the weak area but was not enough. I have an idea on rescuing it but need to allow the finish to dry and harden before attempting it. Safe turning

TOMORROW MAY 12, 2022 For The Newbies- Looking for something new to try? Check out this neat idea for holding a mirror, turned by Jennifer Shirley- Before starting a turning, it is often wise to consider what type finish it will have. In this video, Sam Angelo discusses his thoughts on the subject. Expand Your Horizons- Most of the time turners do a lot wood prepping to prevent a turning from warping. In this video, Alan Stratton experiments with green wood to see the results of warping- New Turning Items- The lid is off the secret! New Easy Wood Tools products are now available and shipping!! Thanks @Jim from Easy Wood Tools!!! Here's the link to the Easy Wood Tools site for ordering- https://www.easywoodtools.com/shop-lathe-accessories This video shows Carl Jacobson turning a bowl, using the new rings. These are the quality you would expect from Easy Wood Tools. VERY heavy, lots of mounting holes, absolutely now slippage between the chuck and ring and no runout on either the side or face of the rings. This is a PDF of the announcement- New Public Product Announcement May 2022.pdf From Ultra-Shear, a new pen mandrel Click on the image for more information. Woodturners Wonders is running a sale on CBN Hones https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/sales Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Safe turning
  8. Just a reminder, please add tags when you make a post. Tags help others locate similar subject matter when doing a search of our forum. Our Patriot Turners- @HandyDan gave us some great tips on reverse chucking a bowl when finishing off the bowl bottom- Dan explains his method in this post- @smitty10101 Posed a question about end grain tear out when turning a bowl. This started a great discussion on the various causes of tear out and how to minimize it. Check out Smitty's post for all the input- PLEASE CHECK THE "FOR THE NEWBIES" SECTION FOR ADDITIONAL REFERENCES ON END GRAIN TEAROUT Unfortunately, Smitty, could have used Dan's technique for revers chucking. His bowl became airborne and didn't fare too well- Our members offered some suggestions to help prevent this from happening again. @AndrewB turned a maple bowl. This turning blank has some awesome grain and Andrew did a beautiful job! See his accompanying post for more about this turning- @Fred W. Hargis Jr says he is a non-turner. Looking at this project, I think he is underrating his skills. Fred asked our forum for information on creating a lathe tool handle. and then showed us his work- Well done, Fred, well done! What’s Coming Up- Click on the following image for links to more information and registration- If you are in the New Hampshire area, the Art Of Turning has several craft shows coming up https://www.artofturning.com/ Not sure how many of our members use Facebook. Braxton Wirthlin passed away from cancer. I copied and pasted this from Ruth Niles's newsletter: Our community suffered a tremendous loss last week when Braxton Wirthlin lost his battle with cancer. He was only 42 and left behind a wife (Melissa) and two small children. Father, husband, son, maker, and incredible friend to so many, Braxton was always willing to help, share, or lend a hand to anyone who needed it. As a gifted woodturner and maker, he inspired so many people and his joy and passion for the craft were evident to all who had the chance to interact with him. The woodturning community is both overcome with this loss, and overflowing with love for this man. Rest in Peace, Braxton. You are and will always be loved and your memory will be cherished forever. Carl Jacobson, in honor of Braxton, created this turning- Rick Turns list of last week's turning videos on YouTube- Safe turning and stay well
  9. Okay, so my wood bowl finish has already begun to congeal and it wont be long before it goes bad entirely. I got some good use of it while it lasted. Oh well, I'll have to order more at some point. How ever I still have a ton of boiled linseed oil left. I've heard rumors that the stuff tends to rot because it is a plant based product made from crushing plant seeds. How ever I'm wondering if any of you had any problems with it via turning pens and using it as a finish. Thanks.
  10. Okay so this was an interesting turn of events. Hollowing went smoothly. Not too much catching thankfully. I was able to get a nice enough shape for a dip bowl inside of the look that I was trying to go for. You guys have seen the start. I'm just about finished with this project here. I do have resin in hand for the inside of the bowl for the coating and I also have mineral oil. Not sure what else I could do to finish it up. I only sanded it up to 400 grit on the papers. I've still gotta cut off the mortise section. Either way I like the way this one is turning out. I'm sure it will look really good when I've got the finish on it.
