I usually grip the chuck when backing out of a drilling operation, good thing I guess. (it's less than 2 minutes)

I just finished these earrings for my granddaughter. She loves large dangling earrings you can see my setup. The one photo shows the blocks with a Hand hold dowel for sanding. I started with one thicker block that I ripped in half after I inserted the turned pieces. I used yellow heart, Purple Heart & blood wood.

Here we are, into March already. Hard to believe. The robins have been here for a couple of weeks so I guess spring can't be too far away. Our Patriot Turners- @HandyDan used his machinist skills to design and build a really useful drilling attachment for his lathe. His tailstock quill was reengineered for easier drilling- Dan received lots of comments on his work! Please check out more images and some of the things our members had to say! @RustyFN 's new lathe was delivered this week! I hope we didn't cause it to rust too badly with all of the drooling! He has it in place, fired up and makin' shavings! Our gang didn't waste any time in congratulating him and making comments! @Fred W. Hargis Jr is still practicing and getting ready to turn the table legs out of cherry. This picks up where he left off last week- Our turners have been providing lots of encouragement and advice - @AndrewB is finishing up a Pepper grinder- He is refining the jig he is using to hold the pieces while turning- Andrew turned another grinder from a 4 x 4 instead of a glued up lamination. Craft Supplies USA produced a video showing the process- Expand Your Horizons- The bowl video illustrates turning a bowl in the "tradition" fashion- the grain running across the diameter of the bowl. Another method of making bowls is to have the grain oriented vertically from the top to the bottom of the bowl. Turning end grain efficiently often calls for specialized tools. If you are interested- Last Weeks YouTube woodturning video list from Rick Turns- It was rainy and ugly out on Sunday so I had a little time to work on the revised steady rest. Spent a fair amount of time over the last couple of weeks working with Sketchup to get the dimensions correct. Have most of the pieces cut, drilled and fitted. Some parts are assembled but the most critical dimension will have to be done when all the parts are cut and clamped together. The wheels have to be centered on the headstock drive center point. Need some help/insight. 1st off I don't do pens, the wife does. BUT occasionally I get drafted into it and refusal is not an option. the set up: Craftsman bench top drill press a dedicated vice to hold the blank the proper sized brad point drill bit for the desired hole. the problem/question: when drilling the hole 8 times out of 10 the hole will be angled through the length of the blank. Both in wood & acrylic. Same result while drilling using the lathe. Is that a problem with my technique? the grain direction? the set up? the equipement? I try to clear the chips while drilling----she doesn't-- NORMALLY. So do you turners use a press or do you drill while on the lathe. How do you, if it can be done, cure/alleviate the bit from wandering? More questions to follow as I think of them. thks smitty

Is there a BEST way to drill a hole thru a cylinder that you have turned down. If you have a piece 8" long X 2" in dia and you want a quarter inch hole going completely thru it, is there a best way to accomplish a straight hole, end to end? My attempts were OK, but could be better. I know someone has a tip or two to share. Thanks

Hi all, I ask this question, because i am having a real hard time finding a drill bit or drill bit set with any quality other than bad. I have purchased 2 7mm drill bits over the last few years, and both were pretty much dull out of the package. can someone point me to a place that makes quality drill bits? I prefer Brad point, but it isn't absolutely required. Thanks
