  1. Maple wood with 2X clear I used the same bottle of color for all the colors, just kept adding more lacquer thinner using the air brush. Cutting the slot for the mirror between the backer board and the carved pieces was a little strain on my little brain but got er done. I might have said before, no woodworking sales sites sells these air angle air grinders and this is what I start hogging out the wood then turn to the Dremel with the flex shaft for the tight narrow gruves. Four different shades counting the middle is a very light pink. These grinders were what they sold for years, both are 20 years old and now this is what they look like now. The older model only took 1/4" bits but now the new model has an 1/8" collet included for all the bits I order from Wood Carvers Supply, Inc in Florida.. They do have a catalog online for ordering bits. The last time I was in Harbor Freight they still had the older models screwed in to their displays and I ask the manager if I could buy those and he said no???? The air tools are much better for lasting than the electric models of anything thats sold anywhere. I would like to put this mirror in the Gallery but not savy enough. The URL has me stumped. I are a wood worker, not a computer goo- ru
  2. Mother Nature decided to treat us with two days of summer. Got a lot of yard work done. Our Patriot Turners- @Headhunter showed us some of his early work. Like a lot of turners, he started out with some pens. He wondered if any of our turners started that way- @forty_caliber posted some images of a platter he turned. I wasn't familiar with his term for the species. Well, Google is your friend and discovered another name for it Check out his post for more images. Oh yeah- it's Osage Orange. Forty also posted a beautiful bowl. I really love the colors and contrasts in this one- Check out how he did this! Our thread of "What's On Your Lathe" continues to be quite popular. This is about where we left off last week- What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration. If you missed it live, Cindy Drozda put her presentation of "Planning A Turned Box" on her YouTube channel. The beauty of her turnings don't just happen by accident! For The Newbies- A neat little spring turning for Easter- The bandsaw is quite possibly the next most used piece of equipment, besides the lathe, for a turner. Mike Peace demonstrates some of the push sticks that can be used when cutting- Expand Your Horizons- Something I've always struggled with is pricing a turning. Kent Weakley has some guidance for turned bowls- Every turner seems to have their own procedure for turning an object. This is the second in the series of "4 Ways" where four turners do the same project, using their own techniques. Tim Yoder turns an arched, winged bowl. Not sure what kept the lathe from taking off and flying around his shop! Richard Raffan turns and burns a natural edge bowl. What I found interesting is that he does the entire bowl without the aid of a faceplate, Cole jaws or jam chuck- New Turning Items- With all of the "burning" as embellishment, this might be something interesting- Everything Else- Playing with some of the elm from behind the shed, This piece was rough turned and then soaked for 3 days in a soap/water solution. Looks pretty ugly but as it dries the color will lighten and turning to the final thickness will remove all discolorations from the soak. These go into my little drying box ala Rick Turns. I weigh the pieces once each day until they reach equilibrium. The day after I put this one in, it lost 100 grams of weight. Safe turning
  3. For my first try at seeing if I should keep on with my wants or shuck the whole idea I downloaded this picture and enlarged it to be about 10 inches across... owning no carving knives since my knuckles won't take that kind of pressure I decided to order a few bits for the Dremel I acquired in 1992 after my son died...He had used it to work on his model train scenery so I figured it still had a few miles left. I glued the pattern on the wood and started what I realized almost in the first day , this was for me. A few reasons, carving don't take a lot of wood or supplies. And a person can sit while grinding away so this would be better on my bad back. You can see I left the pattern on and started grinding away at the wood...Something I realized right away, now one will know when and if I make mistakes like when a person makes a picture frame and the miter joints don't match up!! My kind of carving does need a scroll saw which I already had so my carving business started of with a bang.. not a profitable one, pleasurable might be the right word. I did finish this first carving and maw said thats good to go....I never could understand that lady..
  4. next will be my kind of carving also my favorite kind of woodworking. This is parts of three different patterns to come up with this size thingy.... Just finished scroll sawing the outside of this pattern. Its 1 1/2" maple and it sure does strain the saw. I think I will be inserting a few names somewhere in or on it.
  5. Went in the store with the thoughts of getting a back up flex shaft for the old dremel I use almost every day. The clerk took me to the dremel display and pointed to the shaft which had a price of 31.98. He asked if I also needed the grinder also. No , mine is good. He says for less than twice as much as the flex cable is you can get the whole set for 59.00. Actually we went in the store to buy an up right deep freeze. Then after getting the deep freeze thingy squared away went to look at the individual dremel pieces. The bits in the sets are in my opinion just junk but I could sure use an extra dremel hanging next to the one I use all the time with a different bit....This is a good buy for the set for just the grinder is 59 right now. I know lot of you would not want these in your tools. Thats okay. Oh for your info if you have a flex shaft on yours , using some wheel bearing grease pull the cable all the way out and coat the shaft with the grease, not a lot, just be sure to put some all the way down. Then drop three or four drop of 30 weight motor oil in the top of the housing and slide the cable back and forth a few times before screwing the shaft back on the tool....if you put any more than three or four drops on the entire shaft, thats too much and might leak on to your hand when running the tool. My shaft is 20 years old and still working but has started to vibrate in the middle of the shaft when on... comparing to my Foredom grinder, the shaft wore out in about three years.....I forgot anything that turns needs some kind of lube. Now just because I been around car mechanics most of my life and done a lot of it myself I should have known better.....
