  1. I just acquired this old brace, i have not started cleaning it, looking closely i cannot find any markings. Anyone have an idea what it is? A couple of key items: The head is cut flat on 2 sides, looks original. The head does not turn at the moment, but since the flats are at an odd angle (not aligned with the frame) i’m thinking it should turn. The small device next to the gearbox can be pulled out and turned, it controls the ratcheting of the chuck. Clockwise, ccw and fixed. The shaft sticking out of the 90* corner looks like it accepts a crank handle, and it turns with the chuck.
  2. Last Wednesday in September but at least we had a sunny day here, for a change. Our Patriot Turners- @Roy showed us a really neat segmented turning that will be used a traveling trophy at his wife's work. He asked our turners several questions including their opinions on carbide tools. Please check out his post and see if your can provide any insights from your experiences. @nevinc posed a question about a turning blank he purchased. Seems the blank was quite wet and he was wondering about the turning options. Please check out his post, the comments and add your ideas. Nevin also showed us another cool bowl turning he made. In his post, there are more images and comments from our turners- @HandyDan needs to get a couple of "barn cats" to take care of his problem. Seems he has mice!! As usual, Dan has gotten ahead of us all with this years batch of Christmas ornaments. Check out his post for more images- @forty_caliber completed another one of his beautiful pecan bowls- He received lots of positive comments in his post- @RustyFN finished up a request from his wife to turn a pumpkin (hope she didn't mean he was to turn INTO a pumpkin) Rusty describes the turning and its purpose in his post- We've had more activity on our continuing thread of "What's On Your Lathe" @forty_caliber and @calabrese55 both added what they have been up to. You can catchup up starting here- What’s Coming Up- Live tomorrow, September 28, with Cindy Drozda- Preregister here- http://www.cindydrozda.com/html/Signup.html For The Newbies- Jim Rodgers' video describing some of the various turning tools used for hollowing A short video about woodturning safety equipment from Cindy Drozda- If you have started turning bowls, you know it can be challenging to find a way to hold the work. This video, from Richard Raffan, he demonstrates the process from start to finish on a rough turned bowl. What is interesting is how he has prepared the rough blank for being held by the chuck on the inside of the bowl. A video short from Tim Yoder on turning stance- Expand Your Horizons- A different kind of winged bowl from Alan Stratton- Over the last several weeks we have had information on various thread cutting processes. Sam Angelo prepares a new set of chasers for use. Sam explains why and how he modifies his chasing tools- Mike Peace explores what the term "Food Safe" finish- New Turning Items- Mike Waldt reviews a new vase steady rest- Woodturners Wonders has expanded their product line. They now carry "Hold Fast" vacuum chuck systems. Here's the link to that page on their website- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/hold-fast?_kx=gV5SF2As_3IwtBi5TrpHVQM0F3UvGVbQKzhWGippDlk%3D.VJvU8R Ken Rizza added a YouTube video to further explain the additions to their product line- Everything Else- I think I would buy the game instead of this, but Richard Raffan turns what we used to call Pick Up Sticks! And from Ron Brown's Newsletter- 22 Things I Wish I Knew In The Beginning Friends, here is a partial list of things I wish someone had told me when I first started wood-turning. I plan to do a follow-up article based on your responses to things you wish someone had told you. Things I didn’t mention. Send your comments to me at ronbrown@coolhammers.com. 1) I wish I had a “Turner’s Reference Guide” It is now a free download and very worth your time. Get it at www.ronbrownsbest.com or <Here> You have to be logged into your account. 2) When you get a lathe, you’ve just started to spend money 3) You can turn small things on a big lathe, but it is difficult to turn big things on a small lathe. 4) There are four pillars to woodturning: a) The lathe itself, turning tools (HSS & Carbide), Chucks and work holding devices, and sharpening 5) There are 6 basic types of HSS turning tools but lots of sizes of each type. a) Skews, parting tools, scrapers, spindle roughing gouges, spindle gouges, and bowl gouges 6) Buying HSS tools in sets is usually not a good idea. Get the tool you need when you need it. Learn to use it, learn to sharpen it. 7) Carbide tools are a separate category and 98% are scrapers a) Diamond, round, square, square with radius 8) Hollowing tools can be a separate category a) Scrapers (HSS and Carbide) & ring tools 9) You don’t need 150 different tools, about 15 will do a) It is easy to overpay for turning tools if you only buy brand names because of the brand. Save the expensive stuff for when you are more experienced and can tell the difference in quality. b) It is never a good idea to buy based on the cheapest-priced tool. c) Most mid-priced turning tools today have excellent quality M2 steel for the hobby turner 10) Sharp tools are safer, easier to work with and leave a better finish 11) Develop the habit of sharpening often 12) Hone your skews, avoid the grinder if at all possible 13) Sharpening is a cornerstone skill and worth the investment in time and money 14) Some kind of HSS tool sharpening jig is one of the things every woodturner needs to own as soon as possible. Tools last longer, grinds are repeatable, and you will sharpen more often because it becomes quick and easy. Turning will be more fun and safer. 15) At least one Scroll chuck is mandatory 16) Free wood isn’t free 17) Green wood is like lettuce, it goes bad very quickly so seal it immediately 18) Use PPE, accidents happen in microseconds. Direct pressure usually stops the bleeding 19) Good tool technique along with sharp tools eliminates much of the sanding 20) Stop! Carefully examine your work at every step before going to the next process a) If you can still see individual sanding scratch marks, go back and do it again before moving up to the next finer grit. 21) Swing diameter is far less important than horsepower on larger projects. 22) When your workpiece flies out of the chuck or comes loose from between centers, are you in the correct position to avoid injury? Safe turning
  3. If you haven't seen the post, we are beginning our summer fundraiser to help support the operations here at the Patriot. Please consider donating to this worthy cause and maybe be lucky enough to walk away with some cool prizes- Our Patriot Turners- @nevinc posted a couple of beautiful bowls- Head on over to his post and check out additional images. @calabrese55 finished up that gorgeous segmented bowl. I really like how he does the feet on these- There are more images in his post- What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration- These first two might be a bit of a drive- If you missed Cindy Drozda's live presentation with Carl Jacobson. She has it posted on YouTube- For The Newbies- Drilling on the lathe may not require a Jacob's chuck, especially for smaller diameter bits. Tim Yoder demonstrates- Tim also shows a quick and easy way to round over the ends of handles- Pretty neat explanation about lathe speed- Kent Weakley on the importance of good lighting. Mike Peace demonstrates how to make a soft touch cone for the live center- Expand Your Horizons- What do you do when the bowl becomes a funnel- fix it or toss it? Mike Peace has some pretty strong feelings about it- Couple of turnings from Richard Raffan- Alan Stratton modified his Celtic Knot idea to create swirls and added it to his goblets. 4. Well, I've graduated to Headquarters Driver but still TAD to Ships Laundry and assistant Coop cleaner. Mimi goes for her follow-up 2 week appointment with the surgeon tomorrow. Probably remove the staples and start therapy as well. Our Patriot Turners- @John Morris posted an inquiry on the popularity of pen turning. Turners seem to follow trends and pens were all the rage a while back. Our turners had several thoughts on the subject- I had missed one of John's post from back in December. He wondered, if given a choice, what would be our favorite three traditional turning tools- Check out what several of our members chose and while you're there tells us what you would select- @forty_caliber finished his drying kiln. He has really thought this through and looks like the internal environment will really do the job- There's a bunch more photos in his post along with descriptions of the controls he is using- @jthornton continues to work on his chevron bowls. He took the time to perfect the accuracy and it shows in the alignment of the design- JT's post takes us along through the glue-up and turning process. Please check it out! You may remember from last week that JT's original idea for this design was to create "popcorn bowls". As with all turners, design changes are part of the game. Check out what JT decided to do with the popcorn bowl design- JT was also one of the lucky winners of our Ward 57 raffle. He tells us about the prize we won - @HandyDan posted information about a great deal from Penn State Industries and gave us a look at how he modified a set of chuck jaws to suit his needs. From PSI- The link-https://www.pennstateind.com/store/CUG3418CCX.html?utm_source=Google_Shopping&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=&utm_term=CUG3418CCX&gclid=Cj0KCQiAq5meBhCyARIsAJrtdr70ldWCA_YmLJ606Nrzu2Q_cEi44g6K3bWv-v2lWtTpmg-0b7wwgpAaAksvEALw_wcB @Steve Krumanaker can't wait for Christmas! He has already started on his ornaments for 2023! I love these little birdhouses. What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration- Cindy Drozda does a lot of free online programs. Her only request is that you signup for her emails. Click on the image to get to the signup page For The Newbies- Keeping your lathe Morris Tapers clean is important to ensure the centers don't slip. You can buy brushes but Mike Peace shows us how to make one- Lyle Jamieson demonstrates how to create an Koa crotch bowl with undercut rim. This is a piece of beautiful wood. The techniques can be used on any species. Expand Your Horizons- From the AAW, this quite long video from a live demonstration by Al Stirt. He demonstrates carved square platters Adding threads to a lidded box can add another level of pizzazz to your turnings. The following three videos offer several considerations. @jthornton showed us his segmenting procedures. This video from Jim Rodgers shows his methods of designing, cutting, gluing and turning. Within the video, there is mention of software that can be used to assist in design and calculations. The link to WoodturnerPro software- https://www.woodturnerpro.com/ New Turning Items- Not specifically a turning item but Starbond Adhesives has released a new odorless thin CA. From their website- NO-05 Starbond Infiltrant Odorless Thin CA Glue is a 3D printer infiltrant that is fumeless, odorless, and hypoallergenic. This watery-thin adhesive is perfect for getting into those hard-to-reach hairline fractures, pores, and narrow slots. Our NO-05 is ideal for porous materials such as foam, soft wood (balsa), ceramics, unpolished minerals, and fossils. Often used as a glossy finish, this glue can be sanded, then polished to perfection! Using capillary action, the NO-05 glue works wonders on inlay applications as it penetrates and stabilizes the material. Click on the above image for the like to the product page. Everything Else- Not sure what happened to Rick Morris (Rick Turns). His weekly list of YouTube woodturning videos has been missing for a while. Hope he is OK.
  5. Penn State Industries keyed chuck has been given some bad reviews over the years. I bought one when I first started turning and still have it. I have used it a lot over the years and it has stood up to the use fine. When I decided to buy a set of Cole Jaws I bought from them since I don't do bowls often and they offer quite the deal. It comes with their Tommy Bar chuck which I have grown to like as the best style chuck for me over the keyed chucks. Here is their offering. https://www.pennstateind.com/store/CUG3418CCX.html?utm_source=Google_Shopping&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=&utm_term=CUG3418CCX&gclid=Cj0KCQiAq5meBhCyARIsAJrtdr70ldWCA_YmLJ606Nrzu2Q_cEi44g6K3bWv-v2lWtTpmg-0b7wwgpAaAksvEALw_wcB I also like the idea of the jaws that come with their chuck sets too. I turned those little bowls and this set of jaws worked great for that. One inch diameter when closed and came with their keyed chuck. I also use them for pens, Yo-Yos, tops and many other items. I found some 4" squares I had saved and decided to turn them into small bowls too but wanted a slightly larger set of jaws and found I had two sets of these that didn't get much use. I cut the small nodes off and was left with a set of 1 1/2" jaws. Perfect. I mounted them on the keyed chuck and the Cole Jaws were on the other. I am thinking another of their Tommy Bar style chucks is in my future. I have three OneWay Talon chucks that I keep different size dovetail jaws on for larger items. They are great too.
  6. It's been a slow week here for our turners. However, Easy Wood Tools is helping veterans get started and enjoy the satisfaction of woodturning and dealing with their PTSD. You can help this awesome cause by purchasing T-shirts. Head over to the Easy Wood Tools site and order yours while there is still time- https://www.easywoodtools.com/ Our Patriot Turners- Everyone was busy cleaning their shops What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for links to more information and registration. The mid Atlantic Woodturning Symposium- From Craft Supplies USA- For The Newbies- Scroll chucks are are excellent for holding turnings but they can leave jaw impression marks on your work. In this video, Richard Raffan demonstrates how to almost completely eliminate them- A great video from Jim Rodgers on why catches occur when using gouges- Alan Stratton comes up with yet another method for turning scoops. This is a one piece scoop- Speaking of scoops, here's an old video from Tim Yoder demonstrating how he does it- Expand Your Horizons- How thin do you turn your bowls?? Here, Kent Weakley demonstrate techniques for turning really this bowls- Sometimes the turning we had in our mind isn't quite what comes off the lathe. Here, Tim Yoder makes design modifications on the fly. The results are pretty neat! If you have one of Ruth Niles' Joyner Off Center Jigs You know it can be a little frustrating imagining exactly what the final pattern will look like. In this video, from the AAW, Dawn Petrie-George shows how to create a template to help with this. Speaking of Ruth Niles, Cindy Drozda recently did a live stream on YouTube making bottle stoppers using Ruth's products- New Turning Items- Mike Waldt demonstrates a modular tool rest system. Not sure if this manufacturer is available in the U.S. Here in the U.S., there are several sources of similar products including Nova, Sorby and other woodworking outlets. Not a new item but a sale on sanding supplies from Woodturners Wonders- Check out the deals here- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/weekly-sale Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Safe turning
  7. Just a couple of days left in our summer fund raiser. Please consider getting those raffle tickets, if you haven't already done it. Our Patriot Turners- @Gerald posted a fantastic walnut platter he just finished- Check out more images and the comments from our turners- @PostalTom moved his chess piece post into our woodturning forum. He has a great start on a bunch of the pieces. He is getting ready to turn the "Knights" and was curious about the procedure. Maybe you can help him with some ideas. What’s Coming Up- https://www.woodturner.org/Woodturner/2022VirtualSymposium/2022-Virtual-Symposium---Main.aspx?_zs=ceDib&_zl=kVAC3 For The Newbies- A chuck, stuck on the headstock threads, can be a real problem. In this video, Mike Peace discusses some of the ways to remove it and how to prevent it. Cindy Drozda hosts live tool chats from time to time. You can sign up for notifications when they will be available. http://www.cindydrozda.com/html/Signup.html This is the video she posted from her last presentation- This video, from Kent Weakley, is on twice turning a bowl. What I found interesting is the type of chuck he used to hold the bowl to get it ready for mounting on his chuck. Expand Your Horizons- Last week we posted information on cleaning CBN grinder wheel. @Gerald pointed out there is some disagreement on whether or not this is necessary. Not having used CBN sharpening products, I was not aware of this difference in opinion. I searched the AAW boards for some more information and found this- https://www.aawforum.org/community/threads/cbn-wheel-cleaning.13014/ The discussion touches on several "cleaning" ideas as well as some other wheel care. Along the CBN lines, here's a video from Mike Waldt setting up a grinder with CBN wheels. Although the video is about a specific manufacturer, there are lots of great tips- From the AAW, a video on multi-axis spindle turning How does a true artist deals with the unexpected? Richard Raffan demonstrates- New Turning Items- Ken Rizza, from Woodturners Wonders, has a video demonstrating the Kodiak MAX sharpening system. Everything Else- The Richard Raffan video demonstrated how to work around the unexpected. Frank Howarth takes it to a whole other level. Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Safe turning

Reese is new to turning but it looks like she is a natural and a real eye for creativity!! She shared more of her work here- @Ron Altier is finally getting back into the shop after a brief hiatus as caregiver. As for most of us, woodturning is our relaxation and meditation- All did not goes as planned for Ron. As often happens, "the best laid plans of mice and men..." This post by @Headhunter reminded me that we really haven't promoted our "Ringmaster Sub-Forum" very often. Check out this post for some fantastic creations! Here is the link to the Ringmaster sub-forum- https://thepatriotwoodworker.com/forums/forum/98-ringmaster-turning/ What’s Coming Up- Click on the images for the links to registration and more information- From the AAW- From a social media post by Rebecca DeGroot- For The Newbies- From Carl Jacobson, a video covering some tools that make turning easier- Turning a thin walled bowl has a bit of a learning curve but they are beautiful and elegant. However, thin walled bowls are rather fragile and may not be suitable for utilitarian use. Here, Kent from Turn A Wood Bowl, demonstrates how to have to the best of both worlds. Mike Peace shows us we don't need a chainsaw or a chunk of log to make a bowl- Expand Your Horizons- Some turning, some carving and a lot of sanding when Tim Yoder tackles a Manzanita root- This one's for @Ron Altier. Ron turns crochet hooks for his Mrs. This video, from Alan Stratton, shows how to turn quilting tools. New Turning Items- Woodturners wonders have their Lathe Track System on sale. Check it out at- https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/lathe-track Mentioned this before. Ruth Niles sold her business to Carl and Robin Jacobson. Ruth is holding a clearance sale to avoid having to ship a lot of stock from Pennsylvania to Oregon. Here are some examples of the savings available- Click on the image for the link to more sale items. The sale ends April 3!!! Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Cherry burl/wood platter from a piece of wood I got at the Nittany Woodturners Club meeting a while back-

I liked the bowl he made for his sister. #4 just came out of the drying box, maybe get that one finished this week. Used the Yorkshire Grit and the Hampshire Sheen as the finish on this one, too. Still have to remove some excess lodged in the worm holes. Safe turning and stay well
  14. Been a busy week here at the Patriot with lots going on with our turners! Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber showed us an oak crotch bowl he is turning. Really looks fantastic- He received lots of positive comments on this one. Here's his post- "Forty" also posted a picture of a rough turned pecan bowl. Some beautiful grain in this one! He tells us a little about it and posted a few more pictures here- @Steve Krumanaker has been busy with several turnings. The first one is a sweet looking bowl that he said ran him through the funnies! Steve explains what happen- Regardless, he received lots of positive comments. Bowls weren't the only type of turnings Steve did this week. He made another vase from the Flame Box Elder log. I love the finish he obtained on this one! Check out the comments from our gang- @AndrewB is setting up to do some resin casting. You may remember, he purchased a pressure pot sometime back. In this post, Andrew tells us about the resin he purchase. He received several comments and questions. I'll be following along on this one!! What’s Coming Up- Click on the above image for the link to more information and registration. Woodturner's Retreat- Click on the above image for more information and registration. For The Newbies- An informative short video from Mike Peace on the chuck held drive center. One of these could certainly reduce the need for removing your chuck- Looking for a fun little project? Carl Jacobson turns some honey dippers- Woodturning Monthly from the Woodworker's Journal is available- Click on the above image for the link to the newsletter Expand Your Horizons- @forty_caliber found an interesting video on bowl drying. The video's author uses a dehydrator to speed up the process. This is "Forty's" post. If you view the video on YouTube, the author has a second video with additional tests. @Gerald has posted several bowls he has turned for the Beads Of Courage group. This video is from Kent (Turn A Wooden Bowl) and demonstrates the turning process as well as providing links for getting involved- While I was at this bowl turning site, I noticed another video on end grain bowls. You can create some really impressive turning when the bowl is oriented in this position. We posted a multi-axis turning from Alan Stratton. He has updated that video with some shop made jigs. New Turning Items- Well, open those wallets! Lots of new items are hitting the market. Navigate to site links by clicking on the images Woodturners Wonders- Ron Brown's new jam chuck kit- Klingspor from the virtual AAW. Kinda long but lots of good information- Vendor showcase- Not new but really handy- Everything Else- A well deserved honor- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- Finally finished up the little walnut end grain bowl and the large cherry bowl. Both bowls have rounded lips. The bases of the bowls have a rounded foot that mimics the lip. Both finished with gloss poly and of course both were turned completely with Easy Wood Tools. Safe turning and stay well
  15. I got my chuck made today. Don't thinki could have picked a hotter day. 93 feels like 100.
  16. Anyone know if the jaws from the Nova line will fit the Delta version?
  17. I thought I would move this one over here. So I came home from a trip to find one of my SS's missing. It was the Power Pro that I have used for years as my lathe. It was a misguided attempt by my wife and son to get me a new lathe for Xmas and give my son a second SS. He is a pretty serious woodworker in his own right and has wanted a Power Pro for a long time. He did pay for half the new lathe for which he could have easily purchased a PP upgrade. A new lathe in my shop would require that I get rid of one SS no matter what due to spatial restrictions and the sentiment was very nice. I would have given him one of the SS to make room anyway, just not the PP. My son makes a ton of money and can easily afford to buy whatever he wants in the way of tools so economics is not an issue. Anyway yesterday turned into a very emotional time but we got it all settled. We will swap out headstocks so I get my PP back, along with all my accessories. He also took my nova chuck and heavy duty tool rest. The rationale was that the new lathe is coming with a new chuck and therefore I would not need the Nova. In the words of Captain Ron : GET YOUR darn BEER MATE. So as of last night he gets a regular headstock and his wife is getting him a PP upgrade for Xmas and I get my stuff back and he can keep the SS. They both meant well so I am not angry anymore but it was a little weird. The flip side of all this is they both know the history here. I have been turning on a SS all my life. My father had an old greenie that I turned on as a boy and I have been turning on one ever since. I have had a larger lathe in the past ( Powermatic) and was impressed with everything but the floor to spindle height which is way higher than the SS. It always felt awkward as I am used to leaning down on the chisel with my weight and did not feel I had the control I have with the SS. In all fairness I didn't give it very long time for adjustment before I went back to the SS. This was right about the time then PP came out and I also found a universal tool rest for sale which along with hanging a 400lb tool chest from the tubes changed the SS to a much better lathe. The only limitation was the swing over bed distance which is limits the size turning to about 13". This is where the current motive for my wife comes into play. She for the most part designs the house and I build it. We have done this for 40 years. She periodically comes up with a need for me to turn an object much larger than 13" in diameter which is the current case, and to her seemed logical to buy us a bigger lathe. The new lathe has 24" capability so it will give her more options. Always an interesting journey when she has more options. Paul
  18. So far so good really enjoying Myrtle wood for turning. It turns even better than poplar. So I got some of these small blanks as I said from Rockler to do small projects so far I've had pretty good luck with shopping with them. A bit on the expensive side but yes so far good to order from. Had zero issues. Now with this project the problem I keep running into is chisels catching on the side. I've still got a touch of refining to do on the outside but I wanted to get a start on the hollowing to see how thick or thin I wanted the project. But So far its turning out. I went the mortise route and cut it out of the bottom fit it to the chuck like a dream. I flipped it around on the chuck and linking up the jacobs chuck. That thing worked wonderfully. Glad you guys talked me into gettin it. Effeminately worth the 22 some odd bucks. Also received my pend jaw set still waiting on my big bowl jaws to get here I wound up going with the nova cole jaws. a bit more expensive but I'm sure they will be better off in the long run.
  19. YEP you heard it sorry for the double threads today guys but the first bowl is beginning to take shape. After I got the blank turned down which took a while, the shakiness of the lathe worked itself out. It will be interesting hallowing this one out lol. Sadly this one will have a flat bottom but that’s alright. I think I’ve stood up for about as long as I could today the joints are feelin it.
  20. What a week! Hope this Wednesday finds you all safe and healthy. June 1st started our annual site fundraiser/raffle. Our generous sponsors have kicked in some fantastic prizes. Please check the announceent- Our Patriot Turners- @Ron Altier used some spalted Maple to make another fantastic ornament! Ron continues to use this UV finish and it really looks like it does a fantastic job. Check Ron's post for his description of a "happy little accident" @Ron Altier also started a great discussion based on something that @Lissa Hall posted. Lissa showed us her first bowl, Ron wondered what our first turnings were. This sparked a bunch of comments from our turners. Why not join in and post a picture or tell us what your first turning was- @Ron Altier is this week's winner with the most posts! He asked us if/how we lubricated our scroll checks. He received several responses. How do you keep your scroll chuck running smooth? One of our new turners, @AndrewB considered a new lathe. He asked use for input. Although Andrew has purchased a lathe, you might be able provide advice on using the one he bought- @AndrewB Also purchased some carbide turning tools. Check out the ones he bought and the pictures of the project he turned- What’s Coming Up- Looks like all of the live, in-person symposiums are cancelled through the summer. However, Cindy Drozda is doing live remote learning demonstrations. Her next one is Saturday June 6. Here's her video with more details- For The Newbies- Turners make things round from stuff that is square. Often there is a need to cut the the round turning to remove the part we want. If the diameter is small, a hand saw works well. But on larger pieces, the bandsaw is often the tool we use. Cutting round pieces, perpendicular to the length can be dangerous if not held securely. Mike Peace has a short video showing how to make a jig to safely make this cut- @AndrewB mentioned he is interested in turning bowls. I found this video, from BB turning, that covers the basics of rough turning a bowl. Although he uses traditional turning tools, the process is basically the same for carbide tools. Expand Your Horizons- I don't think I would ever have the patience to do this but Carl Jacobson makes it look easy. The basket weave illusion has been around for a bit- Carl shows us how he does it. I was particularly taken with the jig/platform he uses to draw his straight lines. Tim Yoder is always fun to watch. He shows us that not every turning needs to be proportioned by the golden ratio, have a flawlessly sanded surface, inlaid with colored acrylics or finished with 2000 layers of CA. At about 2 minutes and 40 seconds into the video, Tim uses a really neat way to secure lose pieces of the blank he will turn. I think this might come in handy for securing bowls to Big Easy Jaws and Longworth chucks. New Turning Items- If you are a pen turner, you know the importance of trimming the blank to the exact length of the tube insert. Some turners sand the blank while others use a barrel trimmer. Some of the barrel trimmers don't do an outstanding job and need to be sharpened. This set uses carbide inserts so it will cut cleanly for a long time. Although a little more expensive, it comes with virutally every size pilot reamer. Each piece is available for individual purchase. Click on the image for the link to the website and more information. Everything Else- Rick Turns' weekly video listing is available- I had every intention of sanding my elm bowl this week. But you know about "the best laid plans of mice and men..."- Sunday evening Mimi asked me to go to the basement and start the laundry. Getting things ready, I noticed some water on the floor. Not Good! In the back of my mind, I have been half expecting the 15 year old water heater (the one with the 6 year warranty) to be about at its end of life. Sure enough it had sprung a leak. So, Monday it was a trip to Lowe's. Got the new one plumbed in by the end of the day- fortunately we have the electric type. Got the mess cleaned up yesterday. The problem was how to get the old one up the basement steps. Gravity was a great help taking the new one down; not so much bringing the old one up. Luckily a friend was available and the carcass is now in the bed of the pickup. So the bowl sets for a bit longer- Safe turning and stay well
  21. While doing a bit of clean up in the shop, while waiting on the gas meters to be switched out ( inside for a new outside one) found this...thing.. The brass end has a logo of sorts... U.S. A.A.F. While down at the other end... There is a N O 2. There is other markings around the other side...from what I can make out.. GEO WORTHINGTON CO BUFFALO NY USA Now, about that chuck... Even my smallest chuck keys look HUGE, compared to this chuck...not sure what size jacob key this takes, or where one might be found..chuck works fine, just can't lock a bit into it... had to clean the rust spots off, oil things up a bit. So...what is this thing from WW2
  22. Ok guys what do I need to know when buying a lathe chuck? what do i look for? how do i know what size to get etc etc... I have tried looking the information up but have only become more confused. thanks for taking the time to respond.
  23. I am fairly new to turning anything bigger than a pen. I bought a Nova chuck that takes the two steel rods to tighten it. I turned down the end so I can tighten the chuck on the outside. As soon as I touch the tool to the wood it comes flying out of the chuck. The piece of wood is around 4 inches in diameter and 8 to 9 inches long. The tenon is 2.25 in diameter and I did cut the angle on the inside. Anybody know what I could be doing wrong? Thanks in advance for your help.
  24. Abbreviated edition tonight. Life here has taken an entirely new direction. Our Patriot Turners- @RustyFN showed us the beginnings of a vase he is going to turn. This will be from a glued up blank. Rusty shows us some additional images in his ongoing post- Last week we posted a bowl by @RustyFN. That posted generated lots of discussion on methods of attaching a turning on a chuck. If you missed the follow-ups, here's the entire post- What’s Coming Up- Please join us for the 4th Annual Woodturning symposium on October 4th-6th Click on the above image for the link to more information and registration For The Newbies- Mike Peace has a short video describing how to use a "non-turning" tool to help make duplicating on the lathe a little easier. I have used this idea in the past and it really works! Expand Your Horizons- The AAW has offered a free digital download of Woodturning FUNdamentals. You can get your copy here- https://www.woodturner.org/page/FundamentalsSpecialCompIssue Mike also has a review video of the D_Way beading tool. The tool is available from- https://d-waytools.com/ New Turning Items- Tim Yoder create a beautiful handle for a new stainless steel honey dipper. Everything Else- I did manage to find a couple of minutes to put finish on the little hollow vessel I had turned. The finial was the one I used the spreadsheet formulas to design. Safe turning
  25. Saw this on another site. Looks like a great price. I don't own any so can't say how good they are. They are said to be a Vic Mark clone. https://www.grizzly.com/search?q=(altcategory:"Summer+Sale+Specials")+AND+(category:"Wood+Chucks")
