Sometimes when I'm doing a turning there will be a piece left in the chuck that's big enough to get something out of. Often, I'll make an ornament body, or a finial or roof. Scavenged through the pieces this morning and had enough to cabbage together four birdhouse ornaments. I also had a request for a couple Ashley Harwood style ornament stands so I did those up too. The wood on both stands is walnut, the darker one has red aniline dye on it.

First batch of ornaments for the year. Mostly maple, cherry, and walnut, there are a couple sycamore globes. There is one sea urchin ornament, that one has ebony finials. We spent a few days on Jacksonville beach with my wife's brother and his wife. Two of our best friends in the world. Picked some sea urchins and this ornament will go to them as a remembrance. Most of these are dyed "inside out". A couple local gift shops sell a few of these and those are the most popular. To me, it's hard beat just plain wood grain. Thanks for looking! Steve

A special thanks to Ron today... He sent 2 ornaments to Easy Wood Tools about a month ago, unfortunately they were lost in the mail. Ron went above and beyond in his efforts and today we received a very nice package. Thank you so much Ron for your generosity and beautiful contribution to our Christmas tree. Thanks again to all of you who have sent us ornaments, I can't wait to put the tree up this year!

Sprayed a bunch of ornaments yesterday morning. Some of globes are segmented plywood but I also experimented with the marbling technique described in American Woodturner magazine. Also did several birdhouse ornaments and turned some tiny birds to go with a few of them. Thanks for looking!! Steve

First ornaments for this year. I'm doing a demo Sunday on segmented plywood globes and different coloring techniques so I finished these today to show for the demo. This one is a new technique for me. AAW magazine had a piece on marbling in the last issue and that's something I've wanted to try for a long time. There was a link in the article for a kit to get started and I ordered one to give it a try. This is the best one I've done and it was also the first. There won't be any pictures of the last few I've tried just like everything else, there is a learning curve. Steve

Turned these for the lady and her daughter who own the local honey farm that sells my mason jar honey dippers. They have been good customers and a pleasure to deal with. The top finial on these is supposed to be a bee hive and the drop is supposed to look like a honey dipper. Not exactly sure if I'm all that happy with the shape. Love the idea and concept and I think they will too. Maple and walnut, two of my favorite woods to pair. Steve

Every year a couple popular youtube authors, Carl Jacobson and Allen Stratton, sponsor a Christmas ornament challenge. They are primarily wood turners but the challenge is open to anyone who cares to enter. It's how I got my start on youtube. An entry doesn't have to be a video, it can be a slideshow, just something to show you actually made the ornament. Remember, the entry can be anything from a turning, to a carving, to scroll sawing, or whatever. There ARE some nice prizes, some of which are from EWT. Check it out, it's fun and even if you don't enter it's a great way to get ideas for Christmas ornaments. Christmas ornament challenge Steve
