Hello all, I bought some wood on Etsy; it arrives coated in a very heavy coat of wax. OK, that's good, however, I see black under the wax that is not common on the wood. Turns out it is mold, and the wood is so wet that it is throwing water on me as I turn it. The wax would all have to be removed and a great deal of time would be required to allow the wood to dry properly. I bought several pieces like this and returning it may not be an option due to it was free to ship to me, but to return it with the weight it would be expensive for me to do so. I am looking for comments, suggestions on if I should complain or not (will it do any good?). I already know what I have to do, (suck it up buttercup, cut off the top wax layer and let it dry) but was wondering if anyone has seen this and what you did in the circumstances. Thanks, Nevin

Turned this last evening, sanded down to 400 grit and finished with briwax.

Dealing with the remnants of the hurricane. So far, not quite as much rain as predicted. Will have to wait to see ow it all works out. Lots of flash flood watches/warnings in the area but we live far enough from streams and rivers not to have to worry about that. We have had a little more activity, from our turners, this past week. Lots of new turnings! Our Patriot Turners- @HandyDan turned a bowl and gifted it to the neighbor who gave him the wood. This is such a wonderful way to have the tree's memory live on. Dan received lots of positive comments about his work- @Geraldhas been busy replenishing his stock in preparation for the craft show season. Gerald surely does some beautiful work and has a wide variety items. Too bad he lives in Mississippi, I'd love to visit his stand. @Ron Altier is our King of Ornaments. Here's his latest creation- This one has a special meaning, for Ron. Please see his post for the details on this one and how came about- @forty_caliber turned a couple of bowls from a pecan log. The color and grain of this wood is really beautiful Forty tells us a little more about the turnings and provides several more images in his post- @Fred W. Hargis Jr posed a question to our group concerning turning safety. Specifically, when to wear a face shield. As expected there were lots of comments and different thought on the subject. These make awesome gifts! If you've been follow the "Wednesday's Wisdom" for any length of time, you know we advocate always making something for the "gifters" of free wood. Those gifters are often the tree service folks in your area. In this video, Tim Yoder shows us why it is nice to have contacts who own/use chainsaws and would e willing to cut tree pieces into managable chunks- Expand Your Horizons- @Gerald was fortunate enough to be able to attend S.W.A.T. last weekend. The gallery items were out of this world! New Turning Items- Hoping that @Gerald can tell us if the vendors at S.W.A.T. were showing off any new products. Everything Else- Rick Turns list of YouTube woodturning videos from last week- I was able to finish up all of the Flame Box Elder bowls. All of the bowls were done with the same procedure. 1. Slab blanks cut from green log then sealed with TiteBond PVA glue. 2. Slabs cut round on the bandsaw when ready to turn. 3. Rough turned leaving overall thickness approximately 1/10 the diameter. Rough turned blanks were between 7" and 8". 4. Rough turned blanks submerged in soap/water solution for approximately 3 days. 5. Rough turned blanks placed in shavings for approximately 3 weeks. 6. Rough turned blanks removed from shaving and place in hotbox until weight stabilized. Time varied but generally in the neighborhood of a week. 7. Finish turning, shaping, sanding, embellishing and finishing. I found that a 50/50 mixture of gloss lacquer and lacquer thinner made sanding a little easier on the soft areas. The lacquer sealer is also suggested for use prior to applying the Yorkshire Grit. Some of the really punky parts I used CA to stabilize the wood. All were turned exclusively with Easy Wood Tools and finished with Yorkshire Grit and Hampshire Sheen. Bottoms were embellished with rotary tool from a Mike Peace video. Safe turning and stay well

Just finished the 2nd flame box elder vase, there is some pretty grain in this one too. Decided to do a zentangle on the bottom of this one. This is one of my favorite patterns, "Phicops in a cirlce" Have no idea where the name comes from.

Been a busy week here at the Patriot with lots going on with our turners! Our Patriot Turners- @forty_caliber showed us an oak crotch bowl he is turning. Really looks fantastic- He received lots of positive comments on this one. Here's his post- "Forty" also posted a picture of a rough turned pecan bowl. Some beautiful grain in this one! He tells us a little about it and posted a few more pictures here- @Steve Krumanaker has been busy with several turnings. The first one is a sweet looking bowl that he said ran him through the funnies! Steve explains what happen- Regardless, he received lots of positive comments. Bowls weren't the only type of turnings Steve did this week. He made another vase from the Flame Box Elder log. I love the finish he obtained on this one! Check out the comments from our gang- @AndrewB is setting up to do some resin casting. You may remember, he purchased a pressure pot sometime back. In this post, Andrew tells us about the resin he purchase. He received several comments and questions. I'll be following along on this one!! The video's author uses a dehydrator to speed up the process. This is "Forty's" post. If you view the video on YouTube, the author has a second video with additional tests. @Gerald has posted several bowls he has turned for the Beads Of Courage group. This video is from Kent (Turn A Wooden Bowl) and demonstrates the turning process as well as providing links for getting involved- While I was at this bowl turning site, I noticed another video on end grain bowls. You can create some really impressive turning when the bowl is oriented in this position. We posted a multi-axis turning from Alan Stratton. He has updated that video with some shop made jigs. Both bowls have rounded lips. The bases of the bowls have a rounded foot that mimics the lip. Both finished with gloss poly and of course both were turned completely with Easy Wood Tools. Expand Your Horizons- Mike Peace demonstrates multi-axis turning in this two part presentation. What I found interesting is that Mr. Peace didn't use a fancy jig for holding the offset pieces. There are many, many examples of steady rests available from just about every woodturning store. And even more shop made versions on line. What is new, here, is a unique method of mounting the three wheels. Here's the link for more information- https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/magnetic-homemade-steady-rest/ Everything Else- Last week's list of YouTube woodturning videos from Rick Turns- I was able to start working on the bowls that a friend wanted made. Her husband and son have a small saw mill and they cut down a flame box elder tree. They provided a log that was long enough to make 4 bowls. They also gave me a piece of walnut from which I'll get a few bowls. Turned the logs into blanks - Was able to get 2 of the blanks roughed out- They are resting in the soap and water bath until tomorrow. Then into some shavings for a while. Starting the next two tomorrow. The walnut pieces intrigued me. The sap wood and heart wood were almost perfectly centered. I thought it would make an interesting piece if the outside was white and the inside was dark. That meant making an end gain bowl. Well it sorta worked. If I would have left the walls quite thick, it would have been better but very heavy. It's still kind of cool. Still need to finish the finish and part off the bottom. Not sure how much it will warp/crack as it is turned to finish will still green. The side walls are about 1/4" thick. Safe turning and stay well

but I'm liking the way this is looking. Fourth coat of gloss wipe on poly, still wet. Probably will get two more coats. Flame box elder about 8.5" tall and hollowed to about 1/4" box elder vase.mp4- 7 replies
