I visited the widow of a long time friend that passed away recently. We sorted thru some of the stationary power tools and their accessories for sale. Next will be portable power tools, then the hardware store and lumber yard, as she put it. One of the things he did was turning little decorative "bird houses" that were ornament sized. He had a few pieces of exotic wood roughly 2x2x10 and a piece of ebony that he never got to. What would be a good way to find a turner who might be interested? There were also a bunch of "half logs" probably destined for bowls.

Steve is kind enough to share his knowledge with anyone who would like to have help making these. Here's a video from Mike Peace and his take on making this type of ornament and one on making his little birds- Steve also creates beautiful little birds to adorn his ornaments. The why and the what are explained in his video- New Turning Items- This is not a new turning item but a change in a turning product. This video, starting about halfway through, talks about Niles Bottle Stoppers and something that can now be made public- Everything Else- Rick Turns must be on vacation as he did not post his usual roundup of YouTube woodturning videos. Hopefully you can find something interesting within our post, this week. I finally put the finishing touches on those rolling pin holders. There is no lathe work involved with these so I'm going to bore you with the flat work. These start out as 3/8" x 2 1/4" x 23" pieces of walnut- Using a template for all measurements the pieces are marked Before they are shaped into ellipses, a dovetail is milled into each end to accept the rings to hold the actual pin. The rings are milled from maple and have the corresponding dovetail shape The top maple piece is an open ring- The bottom maple piece has a recess cut made with a Forstner bit Both are glued into place. Nine more to go, only took a couple of days- I'm not @steven newman Finish is next. 2 coats of oil based poly, steel wool rub down and an application of paste wax Next to install the hangers Locate the holes using the same template Drill for the nails Well this sucks. The shortest nail is too long. As Steven would say- "we have ways..." Hanger...Done! ...and finished- Safe turning and stay well

Expand Your Horizons- Mike Peace demonstrates multi-axis turning in this two part presentation. What I found interesting is that Mr. Peace didn't use a fancy jig for holding the offset pieces. New Turning Items- Every now and then the folks at Woodturners Wonders reminds us they that stock some unique woodturning items. There are many, many examples of steady rests available from just about every woodturning store. And even more shop made versions on line. What is new, here, is a unique method of mounting the three wheels. Here's the link for more information- https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/magnetic-homemade-steady-rest/ Everything Else- Last week's list of YouTube woodturning videos from Rick Turns- I was able to start working on the bowls that a friend wanted made. Her husband and son have a small saw mill and they cut down a flame box elder tree. They provided a log that was long enough to make 4 bowls. They also gave me a piece of walnut from which I'll get a few bowls. Turned the logs into blanks - Was able to get 2 of the blanks roughed out- They are resting in the soap and water bath until tomorrow. Then into some shavings for a while. Starting the next two tomorrow. The walnut pieces intrigued me. The sap wood and heart wood were almost perfectly centered. I thought it would make an interesting piece if the outside was white and the inside was dark. That meant making an end gain bowl. Well it sorta worked. If I would have left the walls quite thick, it would have been better but very heavy. It's still kind of cool. Still need to finish the finish and part off the bottom. Not sure how much it will warp/crack as it is turned to finish will still green. The side walls are about 1/4" thick. Safe turning and stay well

These are all Indiana hardwoods, walnut, maple, spalted beech, and cherry. May even be a piece of ash in there.

First batch of ornaments for the year. Mostly maple, cherry, and walnut, there are a couple sycamore globes. There is one sea urchin ornament, that one has ebony finials. We spent a few days on Jacksonville beach with my wife's brother and his wife. Two of our best friends in the world. Picked some sea urchins and this ornament will go to them as a remembrance. Most of these are dyed "inside out". A couple local gift shops sell a few of these and those are the most popular. To me, it's hard beat just plain wood grain. Thanks for looking! Steve

One of our members asked me recently why he hadn't seen any pictures of my work. I told him it's because I've never taken pictures until recently. Just never thought anyone would want to see 'em! But I did have a couple of items still kicking around. A friend asked for some bird houses about three years ago, and these two were "leftovers" in more ways than one... leftover 1x12 roof boards, plus I made more than she had a use for. The coffee table is just a TAD older, by about 50 years! The design was a high school shop project, and since I had few tools and no workshop, I persuaded my shop teacher to let me make a second one after classes. This one was given to my sister, who returned it when they downsized after retirement. The other one, slightly longer, is still in daily use in a brother-in-law's home. Just remembered I had one more project still in my possession. Tried decoy carving about 35 years ago. Mostly miniatures for gifts, and this was the only full-size one I carved. Still have two rough-outs in the shop... maybe one of these days? John

Try not to laugh too hard but this is my first project on a lathe in 42 years. I have used a lathe since I made a file handle in wood shop class in high school. I had visions of inside out ornaments and fancy bowls but I came up with this. I suppose we all must start somewhere but I had a blast watching the wood chips fly. Trust me I will be asking a lot of questions as I try to improve my skills.

RECENTLY BIRD HOUSE WAS MENTIONED, GOT ME TO THINKING. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, IN MY QUEST TO FIND PLACES & NAIL UP A BLUE BIRD NEST BOX, A COUPLE ASK ME IF I WOOD GIVE'M A NEST BOX TO SEND TO THEIR SON WHO WAS IN THE MILITARY. SAID HE'D ASK'M TO SEND'M anything THAT WOOD REMIND'M OF BACK HOME. I DID. FEW MONTHS LATER I ASK THE HUSBAND IF THE BIRD HOUSE MADE THE TRIP TO TEXAS? HE ANSWERED: WE SENT IT TO'M (FORGET PLACE) IN TEXAS. SHORT WHILE LATER HE TRANSFERRED TO VIRGINIA, BIRD HOUSE WENT RIGHT ALONG WITH'M. SHORT WHILE LATER TRANSFERRED TO DC, BIRD HOUSE WENT THERE TOO. HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MAN IN A FEW YEARS, WOOD LOV TO HEAR WHERE'N'ALL DID THAT BLUE BIRD NEST BOX TRAVEL TO, THAT WAS BUILT IN MY SHOP N ALMA, GA. & DID ANY BIRDS EVER SET FOOT IN IT? I've posted here saying that wasps had invaded my birdhouses and killed small birds. I also said that I had sprayed the inside with dry teflon, thinking the wasp nest would not stick. Today I removed one of my bird houses and found two nests, one made by a bird and one made by the wasps that chased the bird away. This time I installed some very thin Teflon sheeting to the upper parts of the house. I also had to restore much of the declarations, the sun had eaten them again. I have several more to go.
