  1. I had an old turning of Spalted Apple. It wasn’t solid enough to turn. I gave up and put it aside about a year ago. I’d look at it from time to time and did get another idea that may work if it stayed together. Part was off center and I decided To use that as a feature (yellow liner) Enough of it stayed together to make an unusual & beautiful ornament. Mama likes it 👍
  2. I had the best birthday I ever had. For the first time I corralled my lovely little granddaughters into the shop to make a couple of hot plate fish shape trivets for their mother. She'd been feeling poorly and I told the little girls that there's nuthin in the world that makes a mommy feel better about things than gifts from their babies that were made by their babys hands with love care and diligence. So we selected from shapes of fish I snarfed off the WWW and got some apple and maple logs (yes that's right we started with logs - short ones, but logs just the same) and resawed and jointed and planed and ripped strips and crosscut pieces of the contrasting color wood. Then we glued up the pieces and left them over night and the next day - - - Yah it was a two day job. The next day we changed the band saw blade together and I showed em how to transfer laser printouts to wood using acetone then with the fish images properly transferred I held them close with my hands on theirs and guided them while they took their work pieces and sawed the fish shapes out on the band saw. Then it was off to the bench for an hour or so of sanding and stroking with files and wood shaped and strips to get the edge contours just right. And they signed them with a wood burn in a discrete place. That night we all had a birthday / new years eve party. It was the best birthday ever. And of course mommy was most pleased.
  3. This is the larger one of the two.

    Apple

My neighbor cut down a tree for an elderly woman neighbor. He always gives me a few logs. He told me it was apple. I cut up one log and rough turned a bowl. It is around 9 inches in diameter.
  5. Summer continues to hang on here in south central PA. Heat indices over 100. Very humid. Just a reminder, if you haven't entered the Patriot Raffel, the closing date has been moved up to September 15- just 10 days away. We are a little short of our goal and could use your help. To get your tickets, click this link- https://raffles.ticketprinting.com/raffle/7976-The-Patriot-Woodworker-2018-Community-Fundraiser/ Our Patriot Turners- I need to apologize to @RustyFN, He posted a beautiful bowl a couple of weeks ago and somehow I missed it. The bowl was turned from apple and has some gorgeous grain. Rusty tells us more about the history of the wood, in his post- @Ron Altier showed us a really nice vase for holding knitting needles. Ron's wife is an awesome "needleler". Ron explains the blank construction in his post- Ron also started a thread about finding the center of a blank and how other turners accomplish this. He eventually settles on a shop made jig. Check out what our turners use for center finding as they responded to Ron's request- @Steve Krumanaker has already started on his Christmas Ornaments and they are gorgeous. Steve explains his technique for coloring these beauties in his post- What’s Coming Up- The Tennessee Association of Woodturners presents their 31st Annual Woodturning Symposium January 25th and 26th, 2019 at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Franklin, TN. You can get more information from- http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=lgmecmkab&oeidk=a07efkgsokx87d387cc From The Internet- Sometimes we just get careless- @HandyDan sent me this video link. He must have remembered I have a love/hate relationship with the skew chisel. This video has a super explanation/demonstration of rolling a bead using the skew. Last week I shared a Mike Peace video using the jam chuck. In that video, he was mounting a canister he turned. Mike posted a set of videos on that cannister project- Rick Turns shared his August YouTube woodturning video list- The Woodturning OnLine newsletter arrived this week. As always there is plenty of great information. There is a particularly interesting article on pierced turnings by Gord Langer. He explains the process and provides sources for tools. http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs030/1103251462235/archive/1109613985933.html The entire newsletter and more projects can be found at- http://www.woodturningonline.com/index.php Everything Else- Last week I mentioned I turned a small finial. @HandyDan showed us what small really is! Awesome turning, Dan! I finally got the finish on that little turning. The bottom is manzanita, the domed lid is a piece of very old spalted maple from Lexington VA and the finial is hard maple ebonized with India ink. Turned entirely with Easy Wood Tools ( @Jim from Easy Wood Tools ). Safe turning and wear that face shield
  6. I am into new territory and will appreciate your thoughts. I have inherited an 8 foot apple log - 20 inches at the base, from an apple tree that may have been 30+ feet tall, so far with out any rotting, though I haven't cut it up to buy some time for my chain saw repair. I've been turning, from bark to bowl for several years. I'm pretty well acquainted with how to pull bowl blanks from a log for twelve inch bowls and platters. I have worked with some small apple blanks before. They came out wonderfully. I see only one site that sells apple bowl blanks, and they are pretty small because most apple trees are pretty small. I also read that fruit wood tends to crack more than other hardwoods but that has not been my experience. So, some questions: . Does anybody really care about apple wood for turning, or is there some reason it is not very common? Is this a gold mine or fool's gold? . I could get some rather large blanks - up to 16-18 inches across, up to 7-8 inches thick, or a zillion much smaller blanks. I don't need a zillion small blanks, nor can I turn huge blanks. Does anybody care about such large blanks of apple? . If this was your inheritance, what would you do with it to best distribute the wealth? . How would you cut a 20" log up differently than one that was 12-14? Are there some special cuts warranted with a bit of a rare piece? I'm not a reseller with a profit motive on this but I know that I have some serious chain saw time coming up to make the most of this piece. My friend Ron D, an administrator on this site, can advise me on how to "sell" and ship blanks to recapture the costs. If I have offended some rule about posting for sale, I apologize. Thanks, Robert in central Indiana
